Police officers on the scene of a fatal shooting on West 58th Street in Manhattan on Monday afternoon.

A man was fatally shot in the head Monday afternoon near West 58th Street and Seventh Avenue, marking the fourth death this year in a typically murder-free area of Manhattan.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the gunman approached the victim from behind and fired once, hitting him in the back of the head. The suspect entered a gray or silver late-model MKZ Lincoln sedan waiting on West 58th Street and turned south on Seventh Avenue, driving away from the scene.

"It definitely looks like a hit," said a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the case.

The shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. in front of the St. Thomas Choir School and across the street from a firehouse.

Authorities took the victim, described as a 31-year-old man carrying an out-of-town identification, to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police are withholding the victim's name pending family notification.

Seabicio Rodregues, a 53-year-old doorman, was inside a nearby building on West 58th street when he heard a single gunshot—although he didn't realize what it was at the time.

"I heard a 'tuk,' that's it," he said, describing the sound. "I didn't give it a lot I attention." Later, Mr. Rodregues said he saw the victim lying on the ground, face up.

David Mirambeau, 29, was making a delivery for United Parcel Service Inc. when he mistook the gunshot for the less disturbing sound of a flat tire.

"I just heard the shot," he said. Mr. Mirambeau said he then saw the victim on the ground: "He was gasping for air, he was still alive."

Mr. Mirambeau described the victim as bleeding profusely from his head and face, with two cellphones sprawled out next to his body. The victim was dressed in a black rain coat, black jeans and purple Nike sneakers.

Monday's shooting death is the fourth homicide this year in the traditionally murder-free Midtown North Precinct, which runs from 59th Street south to approximately 42nd Street and stretches from the Hudson River to Lexington Avenue.

Last week, Ki-Suk Han, 58, was pushed to his death on the subway tracks inside the 49th Street station after getting into an argument with 30-year-old Naeem Davis, who has been charged with murder in the case.

Theodore Beckles, a 19-year-old student at Independence High School, was fatally stabbed in September during a fight with a student from the High School for Environmental Studies, which shares the same West 56th Street building.

In April, 19-year-old Henry Wachtel allegedly beat his 63-year-old mother to death during what his attorney described as an epileptic seizure. The mother, Karyn Kay, had been an English teacher at LaGuardia High School.

All three previous homicide cases are still pending.

Corrections & Amplifications:

There have been four homicides this year in the New York Police Department's Midtown North Precinct. An earlier version of this article incorrectly said there had been three homicides in the precinct so far in 2012.

David McGlynn The scene today of the horrific Midtown shooting.

A man was fatally shot in the head in broad daylight on West 58th Street and Broadway this afternoon in a shocking act of violence, authorities said.

The incident occurred about a block from Carnegie Hall, in front of the St. Thomas Choir School located at 202 W. 58th St. around 1:50 p.m., the FDNY said.

The victim, a 31-year-old black male, was approached from behind by his killer and shot once in the back of the head, according to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. He was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital.

"The victim was walking westbound on West 58th street in front of St. Thomas Choir School when a male black, unknown age, in a dark coat, dark hood and khaki pants began walking westbound behind the victim," said Browne. "The shooter came up at close range and shot the victim one time in the back of the head."

The street was crowded with passers-by at the time of the shooting.

After the shooting, stunned witnesses ran over to a nearby fire house and said a man had been shot in the face, sources said.

The firefighters then rushed over to the victim and tried to aid him, sources said.

The suspect, described as a black male wearing a dark coat, dark hood and khaki pants, hopped into the passenger side of a light-colored Lincoln MKZ sedan, Browne said.

"The shooter got into the passenger front seat of that awaiting vehicle, which had the driver in it and they drove out of the parking space and proceeded eastbound toward Seventh Avenue on West 58th street," Browne said.

"The gun was a silver semiautomatic pistol and a shell casing was recovered at scene," Browne added. "We're canvassing for videos and witnesses."

The shooter appeared calm and determined to carry out the execution-style shooting, according to cops.

"There was no rush," Browne said. "He just walked up, shot him and walked away."

The NYPD has obtained video of the shooting.

When I read about it a few hours ago, I knew it was a hit. Very bold by them to do it in that public of a location during that time. They clearly aren't afraid of repercussions.

Thats funny cause someone just got killed at my local recreation center

1pm

Fredo in da cut that's a scary sight...

Victim of a Hit; that's wild.

Really scary knowing that you can just be popped anywhere, anytime.

Wonder what he was involved in.

...

RIP to the dead man

Sounds like a Law and Order episode. Once he is identified may give us more information as to why someone would want to kill him.

Funny how they identified him as wearing purple Nikes and the Nike store being like a block away.

He didnt even have a rear shadow to warn him... dude probably thought someone was gonna jog on by.

FALSE. No semen was found on scene.

Didn't this happen a few years ago to a guy who was laundering money for Colombians? Broad daylight.

Crazy how nobody was around to catch the guy. And he was able to flee from the scene smoothly after? Suttin' aint right! :smh:

if you were in the vicinity of the shooter, would you try to tackle him or stop him from getting away?

so we in here actin like people don't use the term funny to mean like a coincidence or interesting in certain situations?

For real. It's easy to be a hero when you're behind a keyboard, but when you're in the situation, it's completely different. I was in a bank robbery a few years ago, when 3 heavily armed man came running through, firing two shots in the air telling everybody to get the **** down. I'm not trying to stop them. If you're in the city, you run away from the situation. You don't know what the phsycos next move is, especially after everything we've seen with the movie theater shooting, you just don't know whats going to happen next.
