Lol. Exactly what he is doing. Cabba said he never heard of a ssj transformation and Vegeta got it out of him to transform. I believe he went ssg to show him other transformations and to see train him as his pupil. Vegeta wants to visit Cabbas home planet. Vegeta did say he was saving ssg for hit but teaching Cabba was more important.

I think Gohan will find his way into the mix cause I think this tournament is just step up for something bigger. I just find it hard to believe that this arc is just about the tournament cut and dry. Almost every tournament in DBZ was set up for something bigger and the results of the actual tournament didn't matter.
Also a random though. Gohans mystic form would be a rather convenient way for him to achieve godly ki since the firm was given to him by old kai

Gohan flourished throughout Z while Vegeta continually took L's. Vegeta deserves the shine.
They didn't have to turn Gohan into a clown thought
