Hey NT i was wondering has anybody ever been on academic probation and lost their aid. I had a rough fall with my mom going through depression and my aunt getting diagonosed with cancer. It kinda drained me as a student and I didnt put my best foot forward in class.

Yea your school should have some type hardship withdrawal, it's a retroactive withdrawal at my school but go to your schools retention office and talk to an advisor, you should be able to have the semester removed from your transcript and your aid restored given you provide legit documentation of your hardship. Good look fam.

I went thru similar OP, failed a lot of classes but it wasn't from any hardship, just lot of partying and no schoolin.

I managed to gain my financial aid back but only after a year of hard core studying and just trying, best of luck to you is all I can say 8)

For my mom she never went to see a doctor she just stayed in all day and didnt do anything at all for weeks I really cant provide documentation on that.

If I were you I wouldn't have even taken finals and tried to get an Incomplete or Withdrawal (however your school does it) on account of your family issues.

Next time don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. The world isn't against you, more often than not people will be understanding of your situation if you let them know.

definitely talk to an advisor or counselor.

so your mom diagnosed herself with depression then? yeahhh that's not gonna hold up. I'd advise her to go to the doctor. Even if for nothing more than just so you can get a writ of execution from the Dr.

Schools do understand these things happen, but most are willing to help, but you must be able to prove it, otherwise everybody would just lie after they've failed a class. good luck bro

Start off by talking to ALL your professors about the situation, and if there is ANYTHING they can do to help. Also get in contact with your FinAid advisor asap. Communication will help you plenty. I do not know if you are in public/private school and if you can afford paying for a semester out of pocket. If you cannot my best words of advice is talk to those two sets of people, and try and get your aid back.

If that does not work take a semester off and go to community college if possible and work on getting your aid back for next fall, or find an internship. I wish you the best of luck with this man.

Submit an appeal to the financial aid office.

Check your school's website, there should be a form.

Make sure you have evidence supporting your claim attached to the appeal letter.

Include a copy of your mom's medical diagnosis, and anything else that can help support your claim.

If the appeal is approved you should have another probationary semester of aid to help get you back to where you need to be.

ugh, i was on academic probation for a semester, but I didn't have financial aid so I just had to squeeze in extra classes in the summer in order to graduate in 4 years.

having it mess with your financial aid, that's tough.

but everyone has good advice here . . . talk to the school, they want to work with you if you just let them know what's going on.

All of the advice mentioned is on-point.

Definitely not in your favor if there isn't any technical proof of your mom's depression [sorry, btw], but professors and admin. definitely appreciate honesty and sincerity when they see it.

Best of luck to you, fam.

All of this.

If you go to a public school and this is your first time appealing, then you will more than likely get your FA back.

You should talk to your campus academic advisor, to determine whether or not you can make up those classes, and if so, you could have your financial aid restored if you retook the classes you failed, and passed them. I believe as soon as you get your grades back up, you'll get your government guap in the next semester/quarter/whatever-your-school-goes-by. Also, you should hop on a phone, and get this figured out ASAP, because FAFSA is not to be ****** around with.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties in your life, fam. Best of luck to you, and best wishes.

EDIT: And to get off academic probation, you'll just need to bring your overall GPA above a 2.0 (I think it's the same GPA to get your aid back too). Sounds like you only messed up one semester, so I'd say there's definite hope on the other end of the horizon.

i went through that last semester basically i had to take a one day class and file an appeal. i had to talk to a financial aid counselor and all that but once i finished i got paid :pimp:

Talk to an advisor first. Explain to them your situation; you'll probably need proof. You might be able to restore your financial aid and get off probation if you improve your GPA during the next semester. I have a friend that was in a similar situation where he improved drastically the next semester and he got off probation and received aid back. However, I believe each school has their own policy regarding financial aid.

I know it sucks that your mom is depressed and your aunt has cancer, but unfortunately this is a part of life. I know there's people out there who don't have a mom, dad or aunt and are still pushing through with their education. You have to keep pushing even when its easy to use excuses and you knew this was coming, why did you wait to be put on academic probation to do something about it? It's not the end of the world, but you should have talked to an advisor and let them know what you're going through, they could have helped you out.

Depends, financial aid doesn't come from one source. I was on financial aid my first year of college, got that first refund check and was like

.
This really affected my discipline, I stop getting loans and IMMEDIATELY got on a payment plan. I applied for work study and got a job working in enrollment and financial aid counseling for immigrants and low income students.

I only used Pell and paid the rest with work study and cash, upside to this was when I was done with school I didn't owe anybody a thing.

I have friends with Ph.d's and they're making good money, but a large portion goes to loans, another friend is having his wages garnished.

....work study + cash + 3 units a term

, if you REALLY want your education you'd work for it.

Appeal the decision, get documentation from doctors, go to the financial aid office, try speaking to professors individually if this kind of thing ever happens again - they can usually grant incompletes which would have allowed you to avoid failing out of your aid.

Good luck buddy, youll get through it

You probably don't want to hear this, but you dropped the ball. Learn from this. going back AFTER you failed isn't going to help your case. Had you been proacctive and mentioned to your professors what was going on I'm sure at least one would've pulled you aside. You're gonna have to pony up or take off to save for the next semester.

Keep your head up op..don't let them see you down or try to pull you down fuel off your anger and take your grades...life to another level bro

he is pretty much right, I am up there in the financial aid field

no documentation is just excuses...that's not my thought process but it's the thought process of the Dept of Ed and we can't risk audits for having a heavy heart
