The Official Tennis Thread (Vol. 2024 Oz Open Nadal Out)

Ya Serena just dominates the sport. She has no rivalries lol. and i hope Nadal plays better the rest of the season

Any of you live near Southern California by any chance?

Would be cool to meet up some day and hit the courts a little. I haven't played in a while tho

Got any pics from the ceremony?

Just goes to show how hard it truly is to win major tournaments in tennis.

Even the greatest players in the world can be worn out by the time they reach the final.

All it takes is being off your game for one day, one hour, or even a few points, and you're beaten.

which just goes to show how amazing Serena truly is for consistently winning :x :pimp:

Yeah but also shows there's so many betas on the women's side. No one consistently challenges serena's greatness.

Tennis is so grueling. The mileage Fed, nadal, and Djokovic have after going deep into Majors for years is crazy.

Yeah, I'm no tennis historian or anything, but didn't it seem like during Steffi's era there was much more competition than there is today for Serena? I know she's great and all, but it makes for an interesting debate I think.

seems like a combination of Steffi being great and playing against a larger pool of competition, and then Serena being a little greater and straight dominating a smaller pool of competition

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_WTA_Tour#Rankings some pretty good names on that year end list, I think half of them are HoFers...?

Steffi year end #1 from 87-90 and then 93-96 :wow: didnt even know she was around back in the late 80s

The women's game has changed so much since Steffi played. Specifically, with the power game littering the ranks, the women's game is deeper than it has ever been. Top players are more susceptible to upsets in the early rounds of slams and other big tournaments because of the depth. I would have loved to see how things would've played out if Monica hadn't been stabbed. Her and Steffi had epic battles during that time and it would've been awesome to see.

I don't think her Grand Slam haul would have ended at 22 if Seles hadn't have gotten stabbed. I'll argue that until the end of time lol. The WTA is far deeper now than it was then. Chrissy & Martina were on the decline when Steffi was in her prime. Back then you could book the semi/final before the tournament began smh.

Indeed... and we've discussed this in here ad nauseam, but current equipment and court-conditions are so different nowadays that I am fascinated to see how Seles would have done with current equipment... she had hit with so much power back then.

"Genie Bouchard suffers another early loss, this time on grass to Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in 's-Hertogenbosch. Lost 9 of last 10." Jesus.

I think she is just struggling to follow up her break through season last year due to the enormous scrutiny of her (some what invited perhaps) and in time she will recover and settle down as a top 20 player. Not the hype machine she was claimed to be but it's also not the end of her as some commentators are suggesting.

She was up 4-0 in the 3rd... that's a double-break.. .she should have closed out the match.  I didn't watch the match, but surely her mind played some part in that.

That sucks man.

I wish del Potro a speedy recovery. Did he play for an entire year with left wrist damaged in 2013?

Injuries are a part of every athlete's career... some are incredibly lucky with their lack of injuries, while some are the complete opposite... Delpo... it's such a damn shame.

Same goes for players like Laura Robson, who, IIRC hasn't played in over a year due to a wrist issue.

Anyway.

Damn Delpo....:frown:

What shirt is Murray wearing there? Is it a hoop shirt? I think I recall him being a basketball fan.
