Li is her family/last name, while "Na" is her given name.  However, you wouldn't just call her "Na".  For Chinese names with 1 character, they usually say both... like Li Na, or Yao Ming. Even Li Na's mom calls her... Li Na.  For someone like Yi JianLian (family name + 2-character given name), you can call him JianLian.  

Last-name first.

i get the convention of how Chinese names are written/said, but i just found it odd that shes never referred only by her surname (Li) or her given name (Na). But thanks for the clarification on the 1 character thing, makes more sense now. I thought it was that her name was so short so the announcers said her full name out of habit or something good looks
