The Official Tennis Thread (Vol. 2024 Oz Open Nadal Out)

Murray was toe to toe in the first two sets much like at Aus and then after loosing the service game at 2-0 that was it. I agree he lost belief in that final Set but this year Murray is second only to Novak on form IMO.

Believe it or not, Murray's been playing a lot more aggressive... certainly more so than a year or two ago.  But I guess the conditions were pretty tough.  He even admitted it after the match that his legs were got.  The quality of the match wasn't the best, but it was very physical and draining.  Still, it's a surprising drop in quality after winning the 2nd.

I'm watching the Duke/Wisconsin game

Welp, top seeded Genie loses early in Charleston. I wonder if she's still suffering from her injury at Indian Wells or if this is just a continuation of her not doing well outside of Slams.

Her technique is horrible. Not to mention she doesn't construct points well. After two shots she's going for broke which you can't do without devastating power.

My concern with Genie is that I don't know how far she can go with out significantly upping her power and adjusting her game. Sam is a great coach, but Genie is a prime example of a player that would greatly benefit if tennis had a true off-season. She could work on her fitness to increase her power and Sam would have time to tweak her game. I know some people will argue that her results from 2014 are enough to prove that she doesn't need to change much, but I challenge anyone to look at the players she actually beat to reach two semis and a final at majors in 2014. Genie beat players like Larsson, Kerber, CSN, Soler-Espinosa, Cornet an injured Halep and Ana (no offense SP). Those are really talented players but IMO beating them gave Genie a false sense of where her game actually stands against the elite players.

Accolades are the last thing Sloane needs. She really put in the work over the last few months. Hopefully she will live up to the attention.

Not even just about the accolades... having been a player up in the rankings (top 20, I think?), down... and up again... giving her some "rising star" award seems like a joke.

Anyway... congrats to the Murray's!

Great match. That third set was pretty amazing. I think Kerber's experience gave her the slight edge over Maddy.

Welp, at least I still have Jack Sock to root for once the rain stops in Houston...

Hopefully this win will turn Angie's year around.

Maddy keeps impressing me. Sloane is not on her level. She was up a break in a the third and lost but she had an excellent tournament.

It's great to see Jack Sock win his first title after coming back from surgery. He's been having a solid year so far in both singles and doubles.

Nole and Rafa are in the same half of the draw at Monte Carlo...
