24 Looking to build Credit... What are some good tips on your first Credit Card

Question for the experts:

Credit score dropped from high 700s to mid 600s because of a late electrical bill at my old apartment before I moved out for the summer (no follow up emails with me or anything). I didn't know it was late until I moved back and tried to reactivate, and they told me I have a pending bill due. It was for $51.

Anything I can do to refute this? Such a huge drop for something so trivial (in my eyes).
Was the bill sent to collections?

I don't believe so. I paid for it right when I found out and the company accepted payment.

Hopefully they are cool but if its on your report it was sent to collections
Try and call for a pay to delete and make sure they have it in writing that it will be removed. If not keep trying to fight it to get it removed but make sure that gets paid asap.

Paid it as soon as I found out.

I guess I can give them a call (APS) again and see if they can remove it. It didn't go to collections as I didn't get a separate bill or anything.

My 6th month with Amex is coming up, and I am looking to triple my credit limit. Is the limit essentially a guarantee? How do I go about getting it?

Question: I just got a Captial One Secured Card to rebuild my credit. Is it best to pay it off in full each month or leave a low balance and incur a small interest fee? I'm really trying to build my credit somewhat fast to get a new car

So you like to throw money away is that it? You like paying interest when you don't have to?

I don't mind the interest of it will help build my credit. I just want to do whatever is better for rebuilding credit. My first bill is due in a few weeks and I can pay it off in full with no problem

Just because you didn't get a bill doesn't mean it didn't go to collections. These companies are very shady, won't contact you about a bill and will send it directly to a collections agency.

You might want to sign up for Credit Karma to find out what is really on your report. A 100 point drop sounds like a collections to me.

@sthebest  You do want to leave a very small balance to report on your statement, $1 will do just fine for what you are trying to achieve. If you pay off in full before the statement cuts, your credit report won't show that you are actually paying off a balance over time.

all he has to do is have like $1-10 dollars report on his statement then pay it off by the due date right? there will be no interested incurred for an on time payment and that will show him with a very low usage % like he wants and will help him rebuild his score

Always had a question about CC preapprovals in the mail. Do they mean anything or do companies sell your credit profile and soft inquire and "guess" you might get approved.

Whats your score? I got like 8 inquiries on my Equifax and they pulled that. Im guessing as long as you have past CC's in good standing and nothing negative open on your credit file that your good to go with them. Also think if you have high limits on your other cards they will approve you.

High 700's. I have 4 inquiries on Transunion and 1 on Equifax. I don't know about Experian though.

Have folks here actually purchased their FICO scores before?

In your experience, are the Credit Karma scores (Vantage Score 3.0) typically higher or lower than the true FICO scores?

Will it mess up your credit if I get a card and don't use it every month.. lets say idk every 2-3 months?

I have
Ck has been close to one of the scores from one of the credit bureau's
But not all 3
As the scores vary by each bureau
I got my scores from myfico.com
Had it since may
But I had to cancel a few days ago
Cause I kept checking my scores every damn day
**** was addictive
Paying $24 and some change I believe each month
I'm a probably buy them again
Just gonna wait 6 months to a year
Should try it out for a month or 2
But again checking it may be addictive
Score can change every few days
Up and down up and down

 I was doing the same thing. It was addictive then when I would get an alert i would hurry and rush and hope it was my one of my scores increasing. Man that was addictive but im gonna get back on it by next year.

I enjoyed it. Also my scores were way out of wack compared to CK on TU and Equifax i believe.

I payed for my scores monthly to track my scores during my mortgage process through myFico.com. CK was lower by about 30 points.

CK uses VantageScore 3.0. Its a widely used credit score, but its not FICO. The overwhelming majority of the time FICO will be used when someone pulls your credit score.

Just got approved for the chase freedom card, will use it for the promotion they are having and then use it just for gas like all my other cards, any reviews on the card?

It won't affect your credit if you sock drawer your card, plenty of people have many credit cards that they use one and not the other or whatever it may be . The only thing is you may want to charge something small to it once in a blue moon just to keep the card active just in case because you don't want that account to close for history and total credit limit/utilization purposes for scoring.

Freedom is a solid card and of course chase is a prime lender so it's a good look especially if you like rotating categories which the freedom does. For example right now is 5 percent on Amazon then In the next couple months the 5 percent back rotates to restaurant, gas, etc, for everything else not in that category for that month its 1pct back and not 5.

Some people dislike rotating categories and prefer a card like the quicksilver which is a flat 1.5pct anything and anytime. But the chase freedom is a popular choice.

If you're big on gas then I would use the freedom a lot for gas on the months it offers 5 percent for gas then when that's gone just use your other cards that may offer more than 1pct back on gas to maximize your cashback.
