24 Looking to build Credit... What are some good tips on your first Credit Card

I had a capital one card
Pretty average, I think classic. No rewards. No nothing.
They sent me a letter in the mail asking me if I'd like to upgrade it to quick silver. Did it, now let's see how the perks work

Really arent any perks at all. Just the 1.5% cash back I think

Requesting my first CLI on discover this friday. Should i have it completely paid off or leave a small balance under 10%?

Yeah, that shouldn't really matter. As long as your credit score is decent and your income is stable and sufficient for the limit increase -- which it would be if they upped it.

How long to wait until requesting a credit limit increase?

Depends on what card. American Express you can request a 3x CLI after 60 days. Discover you can request a CLI after 90 days. Citi after 6 months (all soft pulls)

Might be wrong, nut just do it whenever. They'll either instant approve you or not. Except for Chase though. They always require a pull.

i havent had a cc in over 10 years.
feeling like opening one up for purchases, gas, groceries etc

Citi double cash (2% on everything)

Amex blue cash preffered if you spend enough to justify the annual fee (6% groceries 3% gas and department stores 1% everything else. $95 annual fee)

Amex blue cash everyday if you can't justify the annual fee (3% groceries 2% gas stations and department stores 1% everything else)

Discover it (1% everything, essentially 2% back on everything with the cash back match. And 5% rotating categories, essentially 10% back with the cash back match)

So I am all set to have my secured Discover card in my hands by the first week of August, and I'm pretty excited about that. Now, I'm reading somewhere that it'll also be a good look if I get a retail card, I'm thinking Target.

My question is, should I apply for that now, or wait until I get back at school and build my history with the secured card first?

Retail cards are a waste IMO unless you are utilizing 0% APR for bigger purchases and pay off in full before the promotional period is up.

For target getting their CC is definitely is a waste.

If you want the 5% off get the Target Red Debit card.

Hmmm, yeah I've heard that you better pay in full each month or else interest rates will tear you up. Well I wanted a Target card because that's where I do grocery shopping at school, and it would only go towards necessities. Any other suggestions I'd love to hear about.

Best credit card for a college student? Will be my first CC and thinking of getting one to build credit in addition to paying students loans. So far the general opinion I'm hearing is DiscoverIT. I'd mainly be using the card for everyday purchases.

Go with Discover for sure. Lowest price guarantee within 90 days, double your rewards for the first year, and revolving categories. HMU for that referral!

So just get the debit card. The debit card gives you 5% off of all purchases.

Do not waste an credit pull on a target CC.

What credit monitoring sites are all of you guys using?

Credit check total is pretty solid. And you can get a 7 day trial for $1 pretty much unlimited times.

Probably the best one is the MyFico credit monitoring if price isn't an issue
