24 Looking to build Credit... What are some good tips on your first Credit Card

Would I flourish, if I told my girl to add me to one of her high CL cards as an authorized user, to get more avaliable credit/history for myself?

No.

Authorized user only means you have access to her credit.

It still all shows under her credit bureau only. Nothing will appear on yours so it won't affect % utilization, history or anything else.

You sure about that? They're not liable, but pretty sure it shows up on their credit report.

Got a random $1,000 increase on my Citi double cash card today. Still no increase on my chase though :smh:. I don't wanna take that hard pull for an increase either

Am I the outlier in this thread?

I only have one credit card and one auto loan with the same credit union.

I just like to have everything consolidated into one account to make managing finances easier. Credit score be dammed!

AUs are inconsistent.

Discover asks for the AUs SSN so they can properly report the information to the Credit Bureaus.

Chase on the other hand only asks for their mailing address so I assume no information is reported unless the mailing address matches what is on record with the Credit Bureaus.

Anyone every request a CLI from discover and not hear back from them? I assume i didnt get approved because my limits the same and never got an email with an update or asking a hard pull. Been 2 weeks btw

me credit score is 524 what should i do to get up? i dont have major debt besides owing 1500 unpaid medical bills

Usually secured credit cards are the best option to get you started. Once you've been able to get your credit up into the 600s I would apply for the Discover IT.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You should get a letter in the mail with the denial reason. If you don't see a change/get and email in like 4 days you were probably denied.

You will be denied for the IT card and waste a pull if you don't get those medical bills either removed or paid. First step is knocking those medical bills out. Try to negotiate pay for deletes for all of them with the creditors or see if you can pay the hospital directly if they can remove the accounts from collections. You can still get a secured card probably, but if you don't knock those collections out your score will be held back and you'll likely be denied for any non-secured card.

Should i still request a cli next month? People tend to request monthly with discover right? Even if denied

Yea do it. It's a soft pull so no loss. I was pulling monthly until recently. I got up to $16k then just kind of stopped. I've gotten the denial reason "not enough experience with current limit" one month then requested the next month and got a $3k increase

Nice! Alright cool I'll continue to request, repped

I believe it does show on your report.

I've looked into it and like another NTer said, it depends on the cc company. Some will report it, others won't.

^^ With Chase it certainly does, That's why I was denied because I was an authorized user on 3 Cards and it showed up on my Credit report, they used Experian. :rolleyes

Yea I don't really care what the APR is because I always pay it off in full at the end of the month, come to think of it, I don't recall ever paying interest going back 5+ years. :smokin

Is it a bad thing paying interest? Besides losing the money, being under the recommended utilization and all does it hit your score?

Side note: Still haven't decided on a card for purchasing these flights and stuff for next year that I was debating

That sucks on the authorized user.

Didnt have any experience like this thats why i said ofherwise in the first place.

Keep it up and you'll flourish in the credit game. It's all about time and good habits

What are some good credit cards that offer more than 1.5% cash back indefinitely and not just a promotion?

Currently, I am grandfathered in with my Mastercard where I get back 2% on all purchases, but I reached my annual spending cap in August, where I should be receiving $5k CB. Also got DiscoverIT to take advantage of the double cash back for the first year and the rotating 5% cash back, but my first year ends the first week of November. Should be getting $6k CB from that. Also carry my AMEX Gold.

Any other cc which offer decent CB? Much appreciated!

It depends on what your spending habits are mostly. Groceries, gas, etc would make you happy with the Amex Blue Cash Preferred I believe. They do 3% cash back at supermarkets and 2% at Gas Stations.

If you really want to take advantage of that and do major spending at other places, then use the Amex Card to buy gift cards for where you want to shop from the grocery store. You know how they have those gift card kiosks in supermarkets near the cash registers? Most retailers are available there so if you're looking to gain max exposure, thats one way to do so. All other categories and places stay at 1%, so if you eat out often or are looking for other ways to spend, that wouldn't be the card for you.

Just throwing some ideas at you :smokin
