Some of you all's ideas of manhood and masculinity are hilarious. Y'all do realize that there's nothing inherently masculine or feminine about tight fitting pants right? That your ascribing labels like "masculine" and "feminine" (social constructions in their own right) to something as arbitrary and meaningless as how tight someone's pants are is simply evidence that you've bought into a certain type of socialization to the point that you're essentially brainwashed and unable to think for yourself. You do know this right?

And all of this "emasculation of men" nonsense is on about the same level as these old rich white guys claiming the country is fighting a "war against Christianity" and that white males are the new, discriminated against "minority"...

There is something inherently feminine in wearing a dress and some pantyhose, I can't be convinced otherwise.

I mean, as long as you admit that you're incapable of critical thinking...

So it isn't feminine to wear a dress? So there are no gender roles in our society?

So it isn't feminine to wear a dress? So there are no gender roles in our society?

Sure there are socially constructed gender roles in our society. Does that mean that these socially constructed gender roles epitomize and exemplify what it means to biologically be a male or a female? Absolutely not...

Our society would generally associate wearing a dress with "femininity." Does that make such an association the "truth?" No.

How do you explain this bro?

That's fine, if you are a niketalker living in Scotland, it is not considered feminine to wear a skirt where you are. This website is so backwards sometimes. You guys really arguing that some pantyhose and skirts aren't considered women's clothing by the majority of people in the U.S.A. in 2013?

There you have it, our society generally associates wearing a dress with "femininity". That is my point. That is what Anton will not accept.

You have your beliefs and I have mine.  We don't have to agree.  Goodluck in life and wish you the very best

I have no idea what Anton is arguing nor do I really care, especially as I rarely see eye to eye with him on damn near anything. However, you stated

There is something inherently feminine in wearing a dress and some pantyhose, I can't be convinced otherwise.

and the implications of this post are simply ridiculous. Femininity is a social construction. Therefore it is not "inherently" anything and nothing is "inherently" feminine...

So what defines a man or a woman? Sexual organs? What defines femininity in your mind? If femininity is a social construct, then my definition is correct. Our society places dresses and skirts under the definition of feminine clothing.

It seems like theres a popular opinion on NT that there's no such thing as gender roles and people are people.  Nobody is wrong and nobody is right.  People should be allowed to act in any matter they please and never be criticized or questioned.  Babies who have no idea about the world they have been birthed into shouldn't be guided and they should be allowed to make decisions that will shape their future, personalities, and image.  People shouldn't care about how they are perceived BUT they also deserve the right to be treated fairly in every situation.  This is the world that some NTer live in.  Sorry J Chambers but this what you are arguing with.....goodluck

So cats condoning skirts now?

:x @ that nonsense. Sounding like women's rights leaders

"I want equality! But I still get to abuse you and you have to buy my wedding ring with 4 months salary while I order yours off overstock"

Y'all need to chill.

Sex, that is, such as male or female, is defined by biology. "Man" and "woman" are social constructions just like "masculinity" and "femininity" are social constructions. Therefore, nothing "defines" man or woman or femininity or masculinity in any static or clearly defined way whether in my own mind or in reality. So, no, your "definition" is not "correct" because there is nothing "inherent" about articles of clothing with regards to social constructions. They are ascribed social meaning within specific contexts (i.e., time, place, and culture), they are not universal truths...

"Beliefs" about what? You never answered my question...

"Condoning?" You're talking about a man's choice of clothing like it's child molestation...

You just said the term "femininity" is a social construct, therefore our society dictates what is feminine and what is masculine. In this time, place and context, a skirt is considered feminine. Don't try to backpedal now. Go to your family reunion in a dress and some lipstick and high heel pumps, and everyone there is gonna say you are dressed like a woman. Only in this internet fantasy world would anyone disagree with that. You can try to intellectualize it all you want, but in this reality, 2013 U.S.A., wearing a skirt and some stockings is considered feminine. If you wanna wear a skirt and live in this country and not be considered feminine, you are going to need a time machine.
