According to the Illinois Observer  on Monday, Illinois State Representative Will Davis – a Democratic lawmaker from Hazel Crest, Illinois – is proposing that Illinois retailers should charge a special tax on each pair of athletic footwear it sells to the public.

Davis’ plan is to have the special 25-cent tax per pair of gym shoes put toward a new program designed to help the state’s youth via the “Youth Build Support Fund.” The program is administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services.

The legislative bill regarding the extra taxation on athletic footwear is officially labeled as House Bill 978 and will likely be addressed on or shortly after Jan. 30, 2013 when the Illinois legislature returns to work in Springfield.

Not a bad idea... 25 cents per pair is considerably less than I expected. I was expecting around 1% of the cost per pair.

My only question is.... Why specifically athletic shoes ? Why not all shoes ?

im guessing, they've seen the madness it causes in the CHI..

my girls homegirl came to visit and she asked me if shoes were a really big deal, because she saw people camping in december with tents on the sidewalk and whatnot..

i live in a small place and we get maybe 1 pair of each size and there's usually 50 people lined up..

i just hope this doesnt drive the prices up.

So we have another regressive tax on consumers who tend to be young and of lower income levels. Why not levy a two dollar tax on high end loafers or heals?

It seems like state governments see young consumers as piggy banks and they feel free to tax stuff that they buy. It makes sense politically because taxes aimed are aimed at older and richer consumers (even self described liberals who live in very blue states), they tend to resist these types of special taxation.

Doesn't seem like a bad idea, but as others have said why not all shoes? sneaks are expensive most won't complain over an added 25 cents on a $250 tag

I'll ask what is this building for the kids newer parks , free summer programs?? It's doesn't say just a very general "youth build fund" come on!! Chicago has the highest taxes in the nation please add on to us , oh and most corrupt politicians every one of the governors to take office , who's counting??

most of these projects' funding is often diverted towards something else or misappropriated in some way

the chi is one of the most corrupt places, the city is now paying for their politicians greed,

they are losing federal grants left and right because of low test scores and their police force is powerless has no funding whatsoever

it sucks when states are careless with their tax dollars and start looking for stupid ish to tax..

i cant believe a pack of cigs is 12 bucks in NYC

fudgin ridiculous.

I Love everyone just lets the government take advantage of them as they please, lets them dictate what they can eat, lets them hide what kind of food comes from nature versus from plants..... and now you're just going to bend over and take a 25 cent tax on shoes just because and be okay with it.

:x

Chicago seems like a terrible place to live. Wonder how KayCurrency doin these days.

Sounds like a great idea. It's just an extra $.25 that will help others... not bad

how about the government workers take a decrease in salary so that more programs could be created with that money?

i kid you not almost every person i've dealt with at the DMV unemployment, or the social security office seem like they either hate their job or someone else could do it alot better..

this lady called me from unemployment last week and her english was awful, i had to ask about 3 times what the call was about

i seriously couldn't understand one word, she got mad cut me off put me on hold and put someone else that was talking to me really slow like i had a learning disability.

Someone from the DMV talking to you like you have a learning disability? That HAS to be a new low!

On a serious note though. This is just another tax on low income people to stuff the pockets of the politicians. If this was really about funding a program they would make it a 1/4% tax on the shoes, not just 25c per pair.
