Let's face it, Jay-Z is the bar in which we compare rappers to because he is the best. PERIOD

Da difference between nas & jay-z is da people crowned Esco da best

While hova crowned him self.

Reasonable doubt dropped and it aint nake a peep compared to more worthy

Classics that same year (fugees, it was written, all eyez on me)

illmatic didnt have the SUCCESS other classics that came out that year either...

ready to die blew it out the water, and as you mentioned, only built for cuban linx also had more success....your moving the goal post now b..

ready to die sold 4 million in 1994, illmatic didnt go platinum until 2000...same logic your using to discredit rd can be used here...
Jay groupies talking about Jay haters. Hysterical.

And, of course, the people right in between are making the most sense.
Dude is really trying to re-write history here.

Comedy.

As someone said, it's easy to see which artist you prefer. Along with the rest of the jokers in here.
laugh.gif
@ "Hov slander" and the pedestal you've put this man on.

No one said anything about 90% or Nas having a flawless catalog. Stop with the hysterical projecting.

It's not a trolling conspiracy. It's just a reality that your idol worship will not allow you to grasp.

Jay, Kanye, or any artist for that matter is not above criticism. It's just laughable to see people get all bent out of shape about it.
not tryna reqrite history, nor am i 'idol worshipping' im using the parameters set in this post..dude said minus the numbers, minus the celebrity, minus beyonce..i didnt take any of that into account, casue that owuldnt even be fair to esco...

unlike alot of NTers..i dont think just because i prefer ross, that makes jeezy lame...just because i prefer Jay doesnt take anything away from nasir...i know both their discographies literally WORD FOR WORD...

people in here giving everybody else credit for Hovs success, its the producers, then its the others that paved the way for 'mafioso rap' ..whatever the case, hov been running rap since vol 2...

nasty nas is my dude, def prefer dude to tupac or eminem or some of the other 'greats'...not putting dude nowhere near hov or big tho..nowhere close.

It Was Written > The Blueprint from a rapper perspective.

Just Blaze and Kanye West deserve a lot of credit for making The Blueprint the classic that it is today. Those are two producer legends who were steaming up and gave Jay Z some of their best work. Jay Z was very fortunate to have those beats, at that time, from those producers.

Nas had for the most part, the Trackmasters on It Was Written. Jay had one Trackasters track on the Blueprint, which also happened to be the worst song on that album, J**** that *****.

Now, if you take away production, It Was Written is miles ahead of The Blueprint. So from that perspective, from their performance as a rapper and what they did with the beats given to them, Nas > Jay on It Was Written and The Blueprint.

illmatic = reasonable doubt

the blueprint >>>>>>>>>>>>>> it was written ..
roll.gif

 @ even comparing them...

yall throwin rocks at the throne just cause now...saying dude only has one good album, or the lost tapes >> his discography..lol..the disrespect is blatant

get real, yall kno jay miles ahead of anybody not named biggie (including tupac and nas)..its that knowledge that your hate stems from...you dont want him to be better than your fav rapper...but you know he is..

not even bringing up the numbers, or the 'girl' or anything else..bar for bar, song for song jay z >>>> your fav rapper(not big) ...

'cause a N wear kufi it dont mean that he bright
cause you dont understand him it dont mean that hes nice'
It Was Written is a better overall album than The Blueprint

So basically ya'll just wanna talk about It Was Written?  Reading this thread it looks like nitpicking and not looking at the big picture.

No where near Jay or BIG? ok guy.

I can't even have this debate on the internet because Jay stans like to tip toe around facts too much. I need them to look me in the eye and say some blasphemous **** like Jay is better than 2pac, Nas or Em.

Where do you live?

Not only was It Was Written better than the Blueprint but Stillmatic that dropped that same year was better. You Jay-Z fans are going to need to start justifying some of your ludicrous statement because I see really good points from one side and then I hear a bunch of dudes salty that people don't think he is the greatest of all time. So let's break this down, what makes "Blue Print" so great? Was it that it dropped on 9/11 because besides that, I don't see much material that would equate this to be a great album. Production solely does not make a great album and that's the only thing the Blue Print has. What is Jay saying lyrically on IZZO, Girls, Girls, Girls, J**** That N***a?? Y'all still jamming out to Hola Hovito or All I Need? Renegade is the easily the best track with lyrical content, and he was CLEARLY out shined by Eminem. And please stop with this consistency talk because if you're not talking about Jay putting out albums from 96-03 then I don't want to hear it because I want to know what the hell has happened over the last decade for his name to still be in the same sentence with consistency.

Ready to die didn't sell 4 million albums in 1994, it took like 2 years for that album to sell 2 million copies. And after that it pushed 4 mill

Take all of the "greats" (Em, Nas, Big, Pac, Jay) in their prime and put them all on the same wack beat, no chorus help or anything. Jay's song will be the worst (not meaning it will be bad). I would bet my last dollar on it. Thats a big picture for you. Take Big and Pac out of the equation, and do it right now. You will get the same result.

Lies on top of lies on top of lies. I don't even like arguing hypothetical questions but this one is doable because Jay has songs with some of the people listed. Look at Renegade, Em an Jay verse were equal. People say Em killed Jay but they both went hard, and they balanced each other out. An that beat was made by Em he should have obliterated Hov but he didn't. So that's how that go. Look at Brooklyn's Finest...once again Jay was not outshines or outclassed. They both went hard. If anything, you could make the point Jay went harder, he had more quotables on the song, Look at Success and Black Republicans...Jay killed Nas on both...nothin more to be said. People acting like Jay is just some slouch. He got bars an bars for days. Has he gotten comfortable...yes. But he will stick rap circles around anyone...save for Em. They'reequal in my eyes..rap wise. But Jay got it overall career wise,

Stop reading after dude said Em and Jay's verses were equal. Seriously,  "Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?"

It's pretty funny people debate the Renegade song when Em's verse was laid down with Royce Da 5'9" probably weeks to months in advance, and Jay-Z still couldn't write or "freestyle" a verse better than Em's.
Those ppl ignore the hell out of that

No. Not duets, because we are separating them as individuals. making their own songs.

Not battles because I will not buy a song/CD of a battle. They are artists, and to be considered "great" you should be able to make a good/decent song from any beat right?

How can it be lies when musical preference is based on opinion? And please don't feed me that numbers BS..

Having the better verse in a song that both were featured on doesnt hold that much weight to me honestly cause its not a guarantee whether either of the rappers were trying spit their best verse

Jay killed Nas on black republicans and success? Em and Jay were equal on renagades?

straight nonsense.
He didnt? The two songs where clear slaughters, Nas wasnt saying a damn thing. Google Earth, Converse, and whatever nonsense inbetween. It wasnt even close especially on Black Republican. They were equal on renegades, just becuase one guy was more notorious at the time and had a more controversial topic to speak about doesnt mean his verse was better.

This question is too subjective.

Is he the best lyricist? best artist? what?

It all depends what people consider lyrical.  Id rather hear triple entendres than "Rappers, I monkey flip em with the funky rythm"

Jay probably has the best balance out of rappers, hence is GOAT title.  I know regular ****** in the hood with flow like any said rapper mentioned in this thread, but nobody puts it all together like Jay.  I used to be a Lupe and Nas stan off their flows and subject matter, and a few punchlines here and there.  The more I listened that **** got old quick...

It's obvious people are just fueled by hate in here.

I'm not gonna talk numbers because content speaks for itself. I encourage everyone to listen to the songs mentioned an come back with their opinions.

Slaughter? LOL. Only in your warped world did Jay slaughter Nas on any of those tracks. All jay talked about on black republicans was his divorce from Dame. Nas ripped that track. The only track I can say they were equal on is success. Neither of them said **** on that track. I'm not even gonna bother to talk about renegade because Jay's ballsack is hindering your view.
