Let's face it, Jay-Z is the bar in which we compare rappers to because he is the best. PERIOD

Dudes is wyling w outlandish statements lol

Man Hov is the GOAT...get over it. Poll the rappers, poll the fans(racially balanced), poll the media...

dude said the ppl crowned NaS the greatest?!?! Since when?? aint nobody touching the fanbase Hov created over the years. And you cant count Em cuz of you know why.

Dumb.. Why can't you count Em? Because he has sold more records than Hov with less time and albums?
Consider this, Hov is another self proclaimed King.
Hov does a majority of his numbers in the US. Em has a world wide fan base.

If your going to debate, at least do it like a man and come with something. How old are you, like 12 or somethin?

Not surprised at who made this thread.

Fallacies upon fallacies.

Might as well rename it Jay-Z Stan Convention. I mean really man were your jimmies that rustled by that SDE thread?

and you are?
The same Buddha Bless since I first posted in the music forum. Have you gone senile? or do you need to wipe that ol man jiggga spunk off your eyes?

First of all im a big fan of both Jay z and eminem but I just cant see how anybody on earth can say Jays part in Renegade was better, or even equal to Ems. This comes up alot and im shocked everytime people try to debate it.

The best? At what? I'm serious.

The two things Jay has to his credit:

1. He's rich

2. He's still alive (making him an elder statesman of sorts in the rap game. This latter point has also largely influenced the former point).

These are honestly the only reasons why he, debatably, the best.

We can make arguments about how Nas, KRS-1, Eminem, and a litany of other rappers are better at the craft than he is, but in the end, because money supposedly talks, naysayers will refuse to consider the voices of other rappers in a conversation about the "best." Thus, here, we can see how his riches have made him, dubiously, the best.

Now, you can't have a legitimate conversation about the "best" in the rap game until you involve Big and Pac in the discussion. And I think you'd be hard pressed to find any contemporary rapper who hasn't been influenced by those two in some shape or form. I think this alone speaks to the supremacy of those two. We cannot say this about Jay, however. The only thing Jay has over those two is the fact that he's still alive. Their untimely demise, with particular emphasis on Big's death, literally paved the way for Jay. Had they been alive, would Jay be doing it as he is now? We'll never know, and frankly it's pointless musing over fantasies. But, I bring it up merely to show that Jay isn't "undisputed," word to that "PERIOD" nonsense.

If y'all are going o regard him as the best, then do it properly by qualifying "best" with an asterisk.

I hate this topic. Hov slurpers gon slurp. Nas is the GOAT IN MY OPINION. There's nothing anybody can say to change my mind, no matter how hard Antidope may try. Illmatic > IWW >Stillmatic > Reasonable Doubt. It's not even close.

da bottomline is jay-z isn't da best at anything, sure he got classics but people got better albums than him, and he was never

da volume seller that other artists are either.

Not trying to change anyones mind, that would be pointless. All I came in here to do was agree with the OP then the thread went in the direction that it was inevitably going to go in so I contributed. JAY-Z > NaS and its not even close IMO.

but yall dont. its this is better than Jay. no one else is used in the comparison.

I guess you want me to state the obvious and point out Eminem's race being a large contributor to his success(as he has also stated). If all things are equal than sure Em is comparable but because they are not i believe that the role race plays in his success is to sufficient to validate him being the GOAT or out ranking Jay-Z in regards to the greatest ever.

Em is clearly the more lyrical of the two but thats where it stops in my book.

the point is, why is Jay always used as the comparison? We compare kobe, bron, etc to MJ cause he's the best.

Is this the same reason yall compare everything to Jay?

jay-z ain't a better rapper then Nas

Jay-z hasn't sold more records then Eminem

what is he da best at?

This is some of the most faulty logic I've ever seen. He ain't better than X is purely subjective so let's scrap that, and if you're judging merit by record sales, then that eliminates everybody except one person;the guy who's sold the most, and I'm willing to bet that in the process of doing that you've eliminated the rapper that you think is the best.

Jay-z has YET to make a album better then it was written or illmatic, hell Lost tapes is better then 99% of hova's discography and those were discarded Tracks

from da butchered I am... second disc.

his classic reasonable doubt is a canal street bootleg of only built for cuban linx, from da concept to da raps.

try again OP.

Nas was crown da top lyricist ever in da huffington post, and he was number 2 behind only Rakim in da source for da best lyricist ever.

Jay-z is NOT seeing Nas lyrically, even in Jay-z's BRIGHTEST years, he was known for FLOWS, not for BARS, NO ONE with any kind

of rap compass places reasonable doubt above illmatic, and face to face, even with da backlash of it was written

at its HIGHEST for not being "backpack enough", it was STILL rated basically

even to reasonable doubt in 1996, which everyone KNOWS was underrated.

so i ask again, jay-z ISNT better then Nas lyrically and hasn't SOLD more records then eminem, so how is he da best?

This was a good post up until the last line, I dont think youre seeing how ridiculous that sounds. You've set two criteria that not one person can be the best at both, so how will you determine who is the best? Its broken at its core. To answer the rest of your post, its very simple. JAY-Z makes music that invokes a response from me, more so than any other musician or any form of media for that matter. I listen his music when I'm mad, I calm down. I listen to it when I'm sad, it cheers me up. I listen to it when I want inspiration, I get inspired. IMO he has a song for every person and every subject, and regardless if you agree or not, he is very techincal and lyrical in my opinion.

No other rapper has ever resonated with me the way JAY-Z has. They didnt when I was 7, and theyre not doing it now that I'm 24. 17 years of listening to the same person the majority of the time and nothing has changed. That is for a reason. Because its true quality. Unmatched quality.

I was never here to change anyones mind about anything, just weigh in the topics. Call me a Stan or whatver, it makes no difference to me.

That's fine and dandy that he is your favorite rapper. The thing that is annoying is how you downplay every other rapper trying to justify why you think he is better. Calling Nas a pseudo intellectual or saying he has "struggle bars"(whatever that means) makes you look like clown. It's like you can't recognize or even comprehend that someone can think that Jay is not the GOAT. I can't relate to **** that eminem raps about but I recognize and acknowledge his skills. Same with Jay, I can't relate to being a millionaire or being a drug dealer but I can understand he has talent. Do I think he is the GOAT? No but I can understand why someone would. Especially if you weren't into rap or around in the early 90's .

No, i wouldn't say he's the best ever but he is one of the best.

However, ever since Hov said he was retiring after Hard Knock Life, record labels were going crazy looking for the next Jay Z and failed.
