did macklemore just revolutionize rap marketing? vol. number 1 song in the country with no deal

thrift shop named the number 1 song on billboard for two straight weeks

dropped a cd on his own and is at 292,000

thrift shop sales surpass 2 million sales , double platinum plaque

FILTHY

i think dudes might just opt out of signing deals in this climate based on mackemores 2013 blueprint

all these rappers signing huge deals today are almost all flopping , how long until "major rap labels" are a thing of the past?

There's an obvious element here that is being looked over. I don't know much about dude but I'm willing to bet that his success has almost everything to do with that element. See Taylor Swift.
All I know is- he didnt revolutionize it, he's just thriving the most right now.

this dude is eating..

my question though..

how did he do it?

taylor's parent's are caked , they shopped her around at 16 and got her a million dollar deal

they did crazy research and saw a gap in the market

they put 2 and 2 togethor. only people buying cd's are country fans and kids

now she's doing 1 mill a week back 2 back cd's with 4 multi platinum paques before

the age of 24 ,

Has more to do with them having a loyal fanbase and Thrift Shop being such a hit.

- He's not the first, a lot of rappers are selling without a deal. Not sure why rappers are even signing once they get some buzz.

- Heard the song and I am confused. The song is terrible. It's not even catchy, just bad.

People like it because its different. Just saying, theres only so many songs you can hear about poppin bottles and coppin rollies before it gets annoying. Word to Meek Mill.

I dont like the song either. But I understand why people do.

Yup. Macklemores fanbase rides hard for him. Its admirable. I'm shocked at the amount of people who have posted so far who havent heard of dude.

Just listen to the THRIFT SHOP for the first time ever. Its wity and clever, and fresh, but I'de feel bad if I had music out now on billboard, and this was no.1.
This actually makes me wanna rap. I respect dudes grind and his success tho. Gotta get in where you fit in.

Prett sure Mac Miller's album debuted at #1.

Macklemore did the same. And the album was put out on an indie label thorough ADA.

WEA owns ADA. Warner Brothers is working the record now.

It's massive at radio now. Hence the #1 single on Itunes.

This is the first thing I thought of.

Glad to see a Seattle dude break like this (even though i know they're are better dudes out there) though. I've only heard 3 songs by him, and even though from a content standpoint he's bringing it, nothing has really drawn me to him as somebody I have to or need to listen to.

that thrift shop song doesn't bother me one bit.

it's got a cool new orleans mardi gras vibe to it.

this guy is doing it right. i mean, listen to subject matter... it's not some generic rap about poppin bottles in the club/ "swag"/ drugs/ women/ etc...

i checked out his older stuff a while back and he's a promising artist, not another wack a** mac miller.sick.gif

great marketing scheme btw, just noticed how many views the video has on youtube.eek.gif

how did he revolutionize rap marketing?

what exactly is his marketing scheme?

all I hear is a gimmicky song with a catchy hook...

that's been done before.

Seen him mentioned here and there and I have no idea who he is/any of his songs... I feel out of touch :-(
post #24 of 115
Gotta admit never heard of this dude at all.... He's number 1 on iTunes.... Where the heck have I been....

NTers acting like this has nothing to do with race eyes.gif.... Song is cathchy tho
post #25 of 115

Marketing is overrated. Half of the marketing is done by the artists themselves. Now, distribution is another story entirely.

Never heard of dude and just listened to Thrift Shop and it is turrible

Dude is legit. Check out his other songs, he can rap and portray pictures. "Thrift Shop" is just a gimmick single. Macklemore is performing during NBA All-Star Weekend. Dude has to have a machine behind him.
I've checked him out before.. dude has a decent catalog of music, puts out good visuals, has a different image/subject matter. The beat on Thrift Shop is pretty catchy.

Him being white has a LOT to do with it though, clearly.
