did macklemore just revolutionize rap marketing? vol. number 1 song in the country with no deal

Dude is legit. Check out his other songs, he can rap and portray pictures. "Thrift Shop" is just a gimmick single. Macklemore is performing during NBA All-Star Weekend. Dude has to have a machine behind him.

I've checked him out before.. dude has a decent catalog of music, puts out good visuals, has a different image/subject matter. The beat on Thrift Shop is pretty catchy.

Him being white has a LOT to do with it though, clearly.

Surprised NT didn't know about him . . . first time I heard about him was this video, it was on Nice Kicks and I'm pretty sure there was a thread in General

Some people probably remember the "Wings" song from last year, but I heard Thrift Shop for the first time this past week and didn't like it one bit. But, here are the videos to make it easier on you guys

Im not Using Eminem because he is white, I am using him because I am a huge fan, and very familiar with his music. But songs like the "real slim Shady" and "my name is" are gimmick songs. Admitted by eminem himself. Its what got jim played on pop stations like z100 etc. These songs put Em on the map. Thats where I end the comparison, because they are totally different rappers.

"Thrift shop" is that for Macklemore. But a lot of his raps have a message, and his flow is pretty sick. Id tell everyone to check out his songs
"Same Love"
"Otherside"
as 2 examples. He seems to be very promising. A year ago he was named in The Source as unsigned hype. and in XXL as freshman class of 2012.

He's been putting in work for a while now, he has a beard, and have you heard the beat?

Kids are in here chalking up his success by playing the white card. Stop it. Thrift Shop even surprised me with it's success, but you know what a big part of it is? He's being himself. He's not putting on a charade of being some drug lord, player, murderer etc.....he's just having fun and not trying so hard to put on some facade for the sake of entertainment. Also, as someone else has mentioned, he has a pretty dedicated fan base. A lot of that also is from his substance abuse problems and the songs he's written speaking on it. He's uplifted a lot of kids dealing with those same problems. Positivity and quality music goes a long way.

Not sure how to embed, but if I were to introduce someone to his music I would go with the following:

"Starting Over"

"Otherside"

"Same Love"

"My Language"

"Love Song"

"Neon Cathedral"

if he had the same hook on thrift shop but talked about being a drug dealer or being a murderer on his verses, no one would know/care and probably have the same success

Song is cathchy tho
At least the beat is anyway. I heard the beat referred to as repetitive, boring and even wack, but the beat is definitely infectious. I remember riding in the car with my 3 year-old and this song came on the radio and before the end of the first verse she says "I like the elephants daddy!" It was the cutest ish ever  .

People acting like this is more then just a hit single. Calm down. Nothing was revolutionized. And he should thank Ryan Lewis for the shine. The only good thing about the song is the beat. And that is literally almost all that middle America hears in songs anyway.

A lot of underground rappers have a loyal fan base that buy albums. A lot of them push 100k first week (atmosphere, POS, Aesop Rock, MURS etc.) and then taper off. They just don't have the poppy singles that this album has.

There's an obvious element here that is being looked over. I don't know much about dude but I'm willing to bet that his success has almost everything to do with that element. See Taylor Swift.

this

just listened to thrift shop ...pretty cheeks

dudes white and has a lil gimmick no wonder he's popular

Basically.

It's that whole novelty defying very low expectations thing. >D

That wings video was :nthat:

Love the Nike Air Jay's in there

This post though :smh:

Let dude live man he hasn't even really had a lot of success.

At least he came correct with the wings video and seems to know his stuff pertaining to kicks :pimp:

Thrift Shop is rap for people that don't like rap which is why its so popular.

I just want all of this hipster and frat rap to go away.

This. Son is trash.

That 'Wings' song is the corniest **** I've ever heard.

Agreed that 'Wings' is trash - on the same level as Nelly's 'Air Force Ones' and 'Step on my Jayz' but it's the anthem for all these 'New Jack' JB stans.

Macklemore is just riding the terrible 'hipster' trend that's dominating the scene these days - as someone said earlier this is 'hipster rap'. 'Thrift Store' is the epitome of 'hipster rap' from the beat to the garbage lyrics but it appeals to its target audience.

That said dude has other tracks where his lyrics are better but his sound is definitely over-produced.

SMH

Macklemore is trash, and so is that thrift shop song

Yall are right about white kids gobbling this up, most of the people I know love it, I don't get it. Then again, they listen to top 40 joints, and dont really associate this with "rap"

Aint nothing cool about popping goodwill tags unless its some trashy type party.

He's being himself. He's not putting on a charade of being some drug lord, player, murderer etc.....he's just having fun and not trying so hard to put on some facade for the sake of entertainment.
