2013 New York Yankees season thread Vol. (85-77) OFFSEASON

Yankees news after cruising the internet for about a half-hour:

The buzz around the GM Meetings is that not one of them thinks Cano will play anywhere else next season. Also his market value isn't increasing. Most teams are not even bothering. Maybe 1 or 2 other teams end up jumping in. But the thought is they really have to outbid Yankees to get him. MLB Network is saying it will be between $180-200mil.

Brendan Ryan's deal was done a week ago in principle. Not sure what it is.. Waiting on a physical.

Cervelli could be coming back.. If he does it would be as backup again. Hopefully that means we are beginning to get serious about McCann, and we trade all the weak catchers.. Other than Gary Sanchez.

Kendrys Morales could be the backup 1B next year, But he is far down on the list based on what he may get and losing a pick to get him.

Freese may not be an option because Yankees will wait for A-Rod decision. Eric Chavez, Jhonny Peralta & Stephen Drew are the favorites. If A-Rod is done for the season, also increases the likelihood that Mark Reynolds comes back.
Sidenote: It seems like we should lock up Reynolds now, and it would be idiotic not too. Good power hitter. Plays 1st/3rd, good DH. He doesn't mind letting go of some spotlight. Should be someone we lock up now.

Yankees like Beltran over Choo & Ellsbury because Beltran would be a shorter contract.

Dodgers will compete with us over Tanaka. I think this makes signing Kuroda much more important. A lot of people think Kuroda is coming around to playing in the MLB for 1 more year. Getting Kuroda back would help us with Tanaka. $75 mil seems to be the number for Tanaka (not including posting fee which is separate from salary)

Javier Lopez may replace Boone Logan.. But he will probably cost double what Boone does.

I want Peralta, decent glove but he crushes the ball.

Ellsbury is always hurt and Choo is an average player. I'll take Beltran if the price is right. I'm fine with bringing back Mark Reynolds for cheap too.

Idk how Cano's even worth 200 million, let alone 300. He's not a star or draw by any means, and can u imagine him hustling even less after signing a big deal? His career playoff avg is .223 on 203 AB. He doesn't mean nearly as much to the yankees as Wright meant to the Mets, so why should we pay him more (7/138) when Wright was 2 years younger than Cano is now. Pedroia, who was an MVP, and doesn't suck in the playoffs got 8/110 and is a year younger than Cano.

Idk how in the world he thinks he's worth to the Yankees twice more than wright and pedroia, a year or two older than they were when they signed and for a 2 or 3 years longer contract. Anything more than 6/140 is really overpaying. It's situations like these why we've only won one time since 2002. We overpay 30 year olds by bidding against ourselves and get stuck with old, injured, unmotivated players eating our whole budget. I'd like to see Cano back but not for more than 6/7 years max and not for more than 140-150mil given the comparable contracts, and i think that's more than generous.

Cano isn't a star? I get him not being a draw... But not a star is ridiculous. He's not a star because he doesn't run out ground balls hit to infielders? Come on bro.

Ped signed for way cheaper than his worth... He basically handed them $40-50 mil

In the past 7 years he's been top 10 in WAR 4 times.

2007 - 2013 Cano .307 Pedroia .305
Cano 175 HRs Pedroia 97
Cano 682 RBIs Ped 486 RBIs
Cano beats Ped in Slug. Ped beats Cano in OBP. Cano .866 OPs Ped .829 OPs

Cano also only misses an average of 2 games a season.

Ped 38.9 WAR since 09 Cano 41.1 WAR

Ped is batting .247 in his postseason career Cano is .222

The $300 mil was to forgo Free Agency.. Which is perfectly in his right to ask for.. Is it crazy? Yes. Did he think he'd get it? No.

But to say that Cano isn't worth $200mil over 8 years.. Or not even close to it, is ridiculous.

^ Cano has star talent but he doesn't fill the seats or sell as many jerseys as Alex or Jeter. I think that's what he was saying.

I loved the interview with Alex today. Some wild **** was said. Then Mike embarrassed John Heyman :smokin

He said Star or Draw. So I'm assuming he separated the two.

And the rest of his post about Ped seemed to be downgrading his talent as well.. When we all know Ped gave up a lot of money to the Red Sox.

Bro Mikes a completely different human being when AROD's around, he's charming...loving...all warm

I love it hahaha :smokin

I see this is a much needed, benefit high signing. We've lacked real offensive production from a C since Posada (Russell Martin was pretty inconsistent).

A 6th year is optional, potentially making it a $100M deal. He has a no-trade clause as well.

By year 4/5, I can see him DH/1B.

C- Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixiera
2B - ????
SS - Derek Jeter
3B - ????
LF - Alfonso Soriano
CF- Brett Gardner
RF - ????
DH - ????

Bench -
C - It will be either Cervelli, Romine, Stewart
3B - ???
2B / SS - Brendan Ryan
OF - Vernon Wells
OF - Ichiro (Although there is growing opinion he will be traded)

SP1 - C.C. Sabathia
SP2 - ????
SP3 - Ivan Nova
SP4 - Michael Pineda
SP5 - ????

RHP - Dellin Betances
RHP - Preston Claiborne
RHP - Shawn Kelly
LHP - ???
SU - ???
Closer - David Robertson

That's how I see the roster right now..

We need to resign Cano. At the very least get Carlos Beltran OR resign Curtis Granderson (Although why not both ).
We need a new 3B
We need a strong 2nd Starter to relieve some pressure on CC. Needing to be fully on every start.
We need a lefty reliever (since Javier Lopez is off the market. Probably Boone again)
Set Up Man (They are looking at Nathan to be Closer. If they do that fine. But if they want to save money. I'm telling you K-Rod is the best value reliever out there).

Still a lot of work to go for me to think the Boss' kids can be the Boss.
