2013 New York Yankees season thread Vol. (85-77) OFFSEASON

Derek Jeter is meeting with the media right now for the first time:

- Jeter on being ready by Opening Day: "Why wouldn't it be realistic?"

- Jeter on probability of starting in season opener: "I'm going to have to push myself, but Opening Day has been a goal all along."

- Jeter on how much he'll play this spring: "I'm on Mo's schedule." - jokes he'll play 5 innings all ST

- Jeter says he hasn't started running - but might start tomorrow or next couple days. He's been cleared for all activities. Ankle has healed perfectly

- Says he won't be playing when they start ST games in a week "you can write that down"

- Jeter said he had a "terrible" off-season because he was stuck on couch for 5-6 wks, waiting 2 heal. Said he used scooter to get around.

- Jeter on expectations for 2013 Yankees: "Same as always: to win."

- Jeter said he now has a plate and screws in his ankle, which will remain there. Joked that his ankle isn't going to "fall off."

I'm a HUGE diehard Yankees fan. They're my favorite sports team EVER. This is the first time though that I can finally say I'm not excited about this season.  Too many moves were made by other teams, and the Yanks brass did absolutely nothing.  I get Hal and co wants to get below the luxury tax payroll, but it just seems like they rather line their pockets instead of giving the fans what they want. Ticket prices are sick at Yankee Stadium.  We're paying all this money, yet we can't get a decent squad out there?  Don't get me started on Brian Cashman either.  The moves he makes are mind boggling sometimes.  I'm still annoyed he let Jesus Montero go for a friggin pitcher that isn't even valuable at this point.  Now Jesus is in Seattle getting his power zapped away playing in Safeco when he had the perfect swing for YS. smh  I could not stand Russell Martin, but yet you let him go and don't make a move for a catcher?  I don't get it. I mean they're really comfortable going into the season with Romine, Cervelli and Stewart...I just can't.

Then the outfield is a mess.  Granted CG puts up monster numbers, but those strike outs are ridiculous.  Brett Gardner could be a real asset to us, but he's ALWAYS injured and I wouldn't be shocked if the same thing happens again.  Ichiro is fine, but that means our outfield is missing something.  Angels stole Josh Hamilton for what they got him for.  Braves upgraded tremendously with Justin Upton and we did nothing...again I can't.

So with all of that said, I'm not happy with the moves or lack of.  We're a team filled with old players, power hitters who are inconsistent, injured prone, and non clutch non hustle players. Our farm system is nothing to write home about. At the end of the day I'll always root for my team, but I have a feeling this will be a painful season to watch.

Welcome to a reality check. When we finish in 3rd or 4th place this year a lot of you Yankees fans who have taken these last 17 yrs for granted (if you guys are even that old) will start to think differently.

Frankly if we struggle this year I welcome it. It's time for the tide to turn, we need a reality check. And these fans need to get off their high horse - just cause we brand the "Yankees" name doesn't mean we are entitled to win.

Things done changed. Stop being spoiled brats.

Time to actually play baseball and not spend to win.

damn, i started following baseball and the yankees in '96..when you said 17 years..wow, it's really been that long lol

Youk acting like he's an inside man for the sox :pimp:

Looking forward to April 1st, ladies...

Don't understand why everyone expects us to be bad.

Our pitching is solid, it's going to carry us
Still have a top 5 player in the game Cano, Jeter and Tex are solid. Curtis gotta work on this Ks and Ichiro was money last year.

I expect us to finish first or second. Baltimore isn't going to have the same year, Boston still sucks, Toronto has a lot to work on. They got talent but so did Miami last year and what happened. TB is gonna be good but ehh.

Jeter - 39 coming off broken ankle

Curtis - 35 hrs 100 rbi .240 BA 150-200 k's

If Tex can hit over .255 I'd be happy

Pitching staff...

CC is our anchor...after that...

Pineda hopefully back by June

Pettite, Kuroda are another year older, what are we getting from Hughes and Nova?

Mariano coming off massive injury, no more luxury of having Robertson - Soriano - Rivera.

Catching situation is ugliest it's ever been

Brett Gardner coming off injury as well..

we have the most ? of probably any team in out division and probably top 3 in the AL in terms of uncertainty in so many positions

Hopefully Ichiro continues his tear though....

If Jeter and Ichiro play like they are supposed to, 400+ hits combined from the 1,2... At least IMO they should be the #1 & #2 in the order.

Cano should feast if they play the way they did last year..

That's a bright side.

1. Ichiro
2. Jeter
3. Cano
4. Teixeira

That should give us a lot of 1st inning leads.

Jesus our lineup is so left handed heavy... Only Jeter, whoever we use as our Catcher, Youk are righty.

Rest of the lineup
5. Youk
6. Granderson (Have Youk 5th because I think we need to break the lefty streak. But Youk or Grandy 5th)
7. Hafner
8. Gardener
9. Cervelli (Or whoever our catcher is)

I really don't like the second half of this lineup. Even if it was ARod there instead of Youk :smh:

I disagree. I guess that's why we all have opinions. I think we win around 90 again this year. My biggest worry is after this year. Rivera, Pettitte and Kuroda are gone after this season. Jeter could opt out. I think this year will be fine. Maybe not as good as last year but good enough to get us to October. We don't have as much power as last season but we can still win with our pitching. C is a problem even though Martin batted around 150 plenty of times and made up for it with occasional HRs

Line up isn't bad.

I think when Jeter gets a day off / plays DH - we put Youk at #2 to get on base with walks. Would be smart. Then have Cano and Tex clean up with Grandy 6. Also I want Gardner batting 9th not Cervelli - need someone on base setting up the top of the lineup for runs.

Good point on Gardener.. I normally put the worst guy last by default.

Yankees desperately need to look for a catcher this season.

Rays' Price wouldn't want to play for Yankees if he had to shave his facial hair

David Price says there would be a major stubbling block to him signing long-term with the Yankees.

The superstar Rays lefty, who some envision as the ace of the future in The Bronx, said he would chafe at the Yankees' long-standing policy against facial hair.

“I wouldn’t stay there very long then,” he told FoxSports.com. “I wouldn’t sign a long-term deal there. Those rules, that’s old-school baseball. I was born in ’85. That’s not for me. That’s not something I want to be a part of.”

The often-bearded Price, the reigning American League Cy Young winner, can become a free agent after the 2015 season. That makes him a trade candidate in the near future for the low-budget Rays, who cannot afford to re-sign Price to a market-rate contract extension (think Felix Hernandez's recent $175 million deal, for starters).

Price said in the interview he was “not taking a discount” and “I don’t play this game for the money, but I don’t want to be underappreciated.”

Cue the pinstriped fantasies. The Rays sold off right-hander James Shields to Kansas City this winter in a similar situation.

“I have no say-so in what goes on the next three years of my career," Price said. "It’s all up to the organization. I don’t think about it. If that’s what they feel they need to do, then they’ll do it.”

But the 27-year-old has grown accustomed the Rays' free-wheeling clubhouse atmosphere, and finds restrictions such as the Yankees' scruff ban -- which recently claimed Kevin Youkilis' goatee -- overly restrictive and antiquated.

"It’s a joke to me, that I had less rules in college than I would on some major-league teams," Price said. "That’s not my style, man. I couldn’t do it on some of these teams I hear about. I couldn’t do it. I’m a grown man.”

I think the policy needs to end..

It's unreasonable at this point... Now that doesn't mean let people grow a Brian Wilson beard.. But they can have a mustache, but not a beard... It's nonsense.

god, seeing him in our hat infuriates me

him being an informant sounds about right >:
