2013 New York Yankees season thread Vol. (85-77) OFFSEASON

Sup ladies?! We've all been at fault this off-season with keeping Team Yankees alive here. I almost feel guilty about it, in a nerdy-message board user way (I bets someone knows what I mean when I say that ).

It's been a very quite off-season for us in terms of signings, but hopefully we've done enough to keep us atop the A.L. East, which once again, will be the toughest division in the entire league. The Jays are in it to win it clearly, the O's can easily have success again, the Rays are a pain as the season progresses, and who knows how Boston will fare.


With Spring Training underway this week, I'll be looking to update the post after this one with news and notes, pictures, etc.

- Girardi: A-Rod will not be in camp with Yankees. He will continue his rehab in New York.

- Girardi on the A-Rod situation: "There really isn't a lot to talk about ... My concern is to get him healthy."

- Girardi said finding a righthanded DH is among his biggest concerns this spring.

- Girardi on the loss of 100 or so homers: "We're going to have to find different ways to score runs."

- Travis Hafner takes over No. 33.

- With Rafael Soriano gone, Francisco Cervelli reclaims his No. 29.

- David Phelps has changed his number to 35.

- Michael Pineda, formerly No. 35, will now wear 43.

- Girardi said Pineda is throwing but will not pitch in ST

- Girardi on managing in his walk year: God's going to put me where he wants me. I'm not gonna worry about it

- Jorge Posada is listed as a guest instructor on the Yankees' clubhouse roster.

- CC Sabathia said he weighed in at 290 lbs., no Cap'n Crunch this winter. First bullpen Thursday.

- Austin Romine says his back feels "absolutely fantastic," wants to win catching job and avoid going back to Triple-A.

As weird as it sounds, I think that Brett Gardner is one of the biggest keys to a successful season for you guys. If he can have a similar season to that he had in 2010 (around .280 AVG, .380 OBP, 50 steals, 100 runs), it will be a HUGE help for you guys.

Not weird at all. We have no speed guys besides him. Losing him last year was awful. We weren't a threat on the bases and no one besides Jeter, Grandy and Cano could go 1st to 3rd with ease.

I probably should have elaborated a little bit than just calling it weird. I was just speaking in terms of the fact that you have an aging Jeter who is coming back from injury, Rivera who is coming off major surgery, Pettite who is coming back from a broken leg or whatever, ARod who will miss substantial time and has more steroid clouds, Teixiera and Ichiro clearly on the downside of their careers, no more Swisher and other various issues....yet for me, Gardner could be the key to your season.

The "weird" part is just that I think Gardner's success will shape your season more so than those big names that most media outlets and fans are focusing on. Thats all.

Quick notes from Day 1: Rodriguez, Gardner, Romine, Jeter

Here’s the quick version of today’s notes…

• Joe Girardi insisted that the decision to have Alex Rodriguez rehab in New York has nothing to do with avoiding a distraction. He said the Yankees simply want Rodriguez to rehab with his doctors. “There’s not a lot that he can do here,” Girardi said.

• Fow now the Yankees outfield has Brett Gardner in left and Curtis Granderson in center. Girardi indicated that the Yankees will consider making a change, but for now there has been no real discussion about it. Girardi’s not sure he wants to shake things up. If they decide the switch is worth exploring, the Yankees will make the change early in camp and see how it works.

• The lineup is a work in progress. Girardi gave no indication of his plans for who will leadoff, where Jeter will hit or how he’ll stack the middle of the order. He said he’ll try different things this spring, but the Yankees rarely have all their regulars in the same spring training lineup, so it might be a while before we get a real sense of Girardi’s plans.

• In the catching competition, Austin Romine is not necessarily on equal footing with Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart, but Girardi said Romine will get a serious look. “He still has an opportunity here,” Girardi said. Romine said he feels great this spring. He lost some weight and his back hasn’t been bothering him this winter.

• Girardi said that finding a right-handed DH is a priority this spring. He also said he wants to see Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera on the field so he can completely get past worrying about them.

• Didn’t see Rivera or Andy Pettitte this morning, but Michael Pineda is here. So is Cesar Cabral. Between today and yesterday, I believe I’ve seen every pitcher — except Andy and Mo — who has a reasonable chance of making the big league roster. The only catcher in the mix who I didn’t see was Bobby Wilson, but my guess is that he’s around, I just didn’t see him.

• There are two additional rows of lockers in the Yankees clubhouse, and most rows have an extra locker to help fit so many guys. That said, there’s still one empy locker in the clubhouse. It’s the one next to Derek Jeter. It’s good to be the Captain.
