The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

Thinking about canceling my nba 2k14 and cod ghost pre orders... Has there been any info leaked about these two games and the differences between the PS3 versions aside from their slight upgrade in graphics?

Blacklight: Retribution on PS4 confirmed for Gamescom

The PlayStation 4 version of Blacklight: Retribution will be showcased at Gamescom later this month, Zombie Studios has announced.

Originally released on the PC, Blacklight: Retribution has drummed up over two million users worldwide, and was announced for Sony’s next-generation console earlier this year. Blacklight will launch on PS4 at launch.

Set in a sci-fi universe, Blacklight: Retribution takes the form of a fast-paced FPS, pitting gamers against each other across a wealth of game modes, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and other multiplayer-based staples.

Various maps are available to battle on, and there’s plenty of weapon customisation options available too. Aside from picking up Shotguns, assault rifles and other firearms, players can adjust muzzle, barrel, magazine, sights and other weapon properties to fit their preferred playing style.

The PS4′s “Big Challenge” is its AMD Chip that “Heavily Relies on Multi-Threading,” Says Planetside 2 Dev

PlanetSide 2 from Sony Online Entertainment is just one of many F2P/MMO titles currently announced for the PlayStation 4. Something that has been widely requested from all of these games that are already available on PC is Cross Platform play between the PS4 and PC, but unfortunately, that won’t be happening in PlanetSide 2.

Matt Higby, Creative Director on PlanetSide 2, explained the reasoning behind this to Eurogamer by saying, “because of the update cadence, and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation network, we’re not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won’t be able to just play with the same people.” On the bright side, they are looking at being able to transfer your character from PC to PS4 or PS4 to PC, but that has yet to be confirmed.

When it comes to actually getting the game up and running on PS4, as opposed to PC, Matt talked about how “the PS4 is a lot easier because you have a consistent set of hardware that you’re optimizing against. It really is a challenge to optimize high-end PC games to be able to work on the pantheon of hardware that’s available to players nowadays, it’s just insane.”

Higby went on to say that while the PS4 “is a much more consistent, stable platform for us to be able to develop for… the big challenge with the PS4 is its AMD chip, and it really, heavily relies on multi-threading.” Be warned, it’s about to get technical:

We have the exact same kind of Achilles’ heel on the PC too. People who have AMD chips have a disadvantage, because a single core on an AMD chip doesn’t really have as much horsepower and they really require you to kind of spread the load out across multiple cores to be able to take full advantage of the AMD processors.

Our engine sucks at that right now. We are multi-threaded, but the primary gameplay thread is very expensive. The biggest piece of engineering work that they’re doing right now, and it’s an enormous effort, is to go back through the engine and re-optimize it to be really, truly multi-threaded and break the gameplay thread up. That’s a very challenging thing to do because we’re doing a lot of stuff – tracking all these different players, all of their movements, all the projectiles, all the physics they’re doing.

It’s very challenging to split those really closely connected pieces of functionality across in multiple threads. So it’s a big engineering task for them to do, but thankfully once they do it, AMD players who’ve been having sub-par performance on the PC will suddenly get a massive boost – just because of being able to take the engine and re-implement it as multi-threaded.

I’m very excited about that because I have a lot of friends, lots of people who are more budget minded, going for AMD processors because nine times out of ten they give a lot of bang for the buck. Where it really breaks down is on games with one really big thread. PlanetSide’s probably a prime example of that.

Why are you acting like gamestop makes the ps4s?
You know that you can preorder a ps4 straight from sony right?
Your example doesn't make sense since shoes are purposely limited to increase nike's profits whereas systems aren't "limited."
why am i acting like GameStop makes PS4's? did i say they did? they advertise them dont they? my example makes perfect sense because if i RSVP for something its supposed to be there. why would i give GS $100 for my reserve if im not going to get what i paid for on release day? do you not understand the concept of reserving something?
eyes.gif
you cant go taking peoples money and GUARANTEE them day one pick up and not have it available on the exact date. had i been told i was not going to receive my PS4 day one do you think i still would of put $100 down. makes no sense....
You implied it. You make it seem as if GS should know exactly how many systems they're getting.

In a perfect world, having this info would be easy.

But obviously, it's not.

You're example doesn't make sense. You're paying for a product that has not been released.

That doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be there, since thousands of others will be doing the same.

The later you preorder, the less chance of you getting it on release day.

I just went to gamestop.com to see exactly what they say when you PRE-ORDER a ps4.

Here's what they say "This product has not yet been released. Pre-ordering a product is the best way to ensure that you'll receive it promptly when released. The date listed is usually the date we pick up the product from the vendor and ship to you."

They don't guarantee that you'll get it on release day, so stop expecting them to.

Preorder it from sony and expect them to have it release day.

Why is this back and forth even taking place?

PlanetSide 2 looks interesting though. I hope they can figure out how to split those processes up between the threads efficiently, I definitely want to give it was play when I pick a PS4 up.

They said that so you'd preorder.

Employees lie all the time.

In some cases, it's their job to lie.

Hopefully someone can give me advice.  I currently own a ps3, running on a 720p lcd tv.  I was going to get another tv for the move back to school with the ps4 in mind.  Size is an issue so 23" to maybe 32".  The smaller size led's come in 1080p and the larger ones are more 720p led.

Should I get the smaller 1080p for the ps4 in mind? Will the 720p still be good for the ps4? Reason I ask because the smaller tv's aren't too great if a group of my boys come through to play anything but i'm trying to get the best bang for buck deal, and get the most out of the ps4 unlike I did with the ps3.

I understand what alley is saying tho I strictly preordered to get it on release day as well what's the point of pre ordering and being told you will get it release day just to find out you won't be?? It defeats the purpose.. They quick to take your money and promise you stuff but what can we do if they fail to get it to us on release day?

Also is there anything that says GameStop is guaranteed release day? I know there has to be some fine print somewhere

think its only guaranteed if you have paid it in full

That better picture quality isn't going to matter when your tv looks like this.

Damn 24 inches? Yea it won't matter 720 or 1080 you can't tell the difference
lol its funny in the android thread, people are disregarding new phones for only having 720p..... "That new Moto X 720p display is a dealbreaker for me."
