PS4 Exclusive NieR: Automata’s First Gameplay Trailer Shows Absolutely Explosive PlatinumGames Action

During a panel at Paris Games Week with Producer Yosuke Saito and Director Taro Yoko, Square Enix showcased the first gameplay trailer of the upcoming PS4 exclusive action JRPG NieR: Automata.

Yours truly challenged the (slightly rowdy, especially when t-shirt throwing was involved) crowd in front of the stage to bring you the first look on the trailer, that looks absolutely explosive.

Later in the presentation, it was confirmed that the game will run at 60 frames per seconds (even if the trailer runs at 30). This is perhaps unsurprising, considering that PlatinumGames values a high frame rate for its games.

It actually starts slightly slow (but very funny) with an introduction in which Yoko-san and Saito-san go to Paris Osaka in order to find something to show at Paris Games Week.

Wait until the end, and you’ll be rewarded by true-blue PlatinumGames-style action.

The games keep on coming.
Best looking Platinum games game I've seen. I hope I don't have to play the original Nier for the story.

Sony's answer to Scalebound :nerd: I gotta check this trailer out when I'm done with this training.

It was actually Platinum who approached Square about making a sequel to Nier.

I don't know how they make so many games at once though. They just finished Transformers, and they still have Scalebound in dev too.

Borderland with pvp modes is what i expect.

If gb can transfer some funny writing into pvp modes, so many lulz to be had.

wonder how far along you need to be ... i just murked rom (easiest boss so far, tonitrus :pimp: :pimp:) and got to ya'arghul

i swear all i think about is this game. ill be at work or out and be thinking on how to beat levels/bosses and ****

It’s funny that he mentions people rolling their eyes because less than 24 hours before this, I was sat in Sony’s Paris Games Week conference rolling my eyes as Rush of Blood was announced as one of Sony’s new virtual reality experiences. Here’s a studio that created one of the best horror games in recent years, Until Dawn, now busying themselves with something as antiquated as as on-rails shooter. This, however, is exactly where Harris and his studio Supermassive Games want us.

We can play with their expectations and those conventions to really frighten players.

This might sound like exec talk but a few minutes through the Rush of Blood demo after meandering along through a spooky house, I feel my attention drawn away from the front of the screen; I move my head and point my guns to the side using the two Move controllers in my hands... nothing there. Then when I turn back to face the front, there’s a mangled up old witch screaming in my face. I let out the manliest of shrieks. Rush of Blood uses a lot of clever sound design to draw your attention to specific places on the screen so that it can really scare you, and I fall for pretty much every single one during the demo.

I think what Rush of Blood does extremely well though is to maintain the level of fear throughout even though they’ve armed you with some guns to protect yourself. I always find it pretty hard to be scared in games where I’ve got firepower but I still found myself consistently scared in Rush of Blood despite having a shotgun, which is something that’s rarely happened to me before.

I only played for seven minutes, but I didn’t pick up on any strong connections with the original Until Dawn. The main connection is an awareness of horror and how best to adapt it into an effective video game experience. If Supermassive Games can introduce execute its smart ideas regarding horror and VR, Rush of Blood will easily be up there with the best early offering on PlayStation VR.

Square and Platinum? SOLD. I watch the trailer later. You already know what type of quality game your getting.

I would say I am one of the few (possibly only) people in this thread who has played and beat Nier... that trailer irritates me.

This is Nier.

What I just watched in that previous trailer is every Platinum Games previous game with a loose affiliation to a last-gen niche title.

The aesthetic is different, the combat is way faster, the protagonist is different, ect.

Don't get me wrong, it looks very interesting. Why call it Nier? Why make a sequel to a niche title then change everything? It doesn't make sense creatively or financially to me.

Maybe I will see more of a tie-in down the road, but right now I'm not sold.

I rented Nier in 2009 and never finished it. It's was one of those games I wanted to finish but never got around to it.

Isn't the aesthetic different due to being on different hardware and with Neir being a budget title?

As for the story, I don't know anything about it but they Square has posted some details and there will be a story trailer too so you'll probably see the tie-in there.
It could also be why it's called Automata and not Nier 2 similar to Metal Gear Rising but I wouldn't know.

As for the creative and financial aspects, they reported in their last annual report that one of the things they were going to do is revitalise new IP's and with Nier being a cult hit and with Platinum offering to make a sequel. It makes sense.
I always heard good and bad things about the first. Mainly good but not enough to add it to the backlog.

This on the other hand looks like Platinum at their finest. The story is also been done by the writer for the original so both gameplay and story should be taking care off so it's definitely on my radar.

I've never played a Platinum games title.  Is it more similar to Dynasty Warriors or Devil May Cry.  Devil May Cry gameplay when you unlock everything is

How would you compare the gameplay to those titles?

I'd say DMC is a fair comparison. You need a strategy in the mayhem. Dynasty Warriors is more hack and slash until you get your Musou filled, unleash, rinse repeat.

They're just known for making great fast pace combat.
They've made a TPS in Vanquish, Hack & Slash with MG Rising and Bayonetta, I have no idea what the Wonderful 101 is and Nier: Automata as well as Scalebound are ARPG's.

Platinum games was created by the Devil May Cry director. So the influence will be there.

The aesthetic I am speaking of is the shadow-y almost drawn art in the game, similar to how ICO was done. It really emits a feeling of being alone, despair, ect. The whole plot revolved around Shades and the Shadowlord. It's very dark and some of the themes can be pretty heavy. The new trailer is bright with vivid colors, loud, brash enemies, and crisp detail. You can still convey that with new hardware.

I get revitalizing new IP's, tying a new idea to an existing IP for brand recognition, and all that. But if you are revitalizing a franchise that had a small fan-base who liked the game for it's eccentricities, why implement ideas that eliminate those?  Why not just call it Automata? Sure, the story might tie together, the character may make sense, but two of the three most important aspects of the game (gameplay and visual appeal, with the third being story) tie into Nier vaguely at best.

It's so early, and these are just my initial feelings. Absolutely they could change, but as of right now, I am not happy with the direction Platinum has taken Nier.

Some counterpoints are that without the Nier tie-in, this game looks great. I am excited to play it. Also, Nier was an average/good game at best so it's not like everything it did was amazing.

They announced a sequel, I got excited to enter that world again, and I see none of that in this trailer.

Did some digging.

With the original NieR IP, they wanted to only do “new things”. Since there are still many, many people who never played the game, they had the idea back in March of 2011 to work with NieR producer Takuya Iwasaki (current president of ILCA and ORCA) to port it to the PS Vita. But at the time, ORCA was busy producing Dragon Quest X, so the idea was fell through

Missed out on a Vita port. :smh:
Since the game is not a direct sequel to the previous game, it makes little sense to call it “NieR 2”. He feels that if they’re going to focus more on battle rather than the typical RPG elements of the first game, then they really shouldn’t call it “2”. The staff working on the game has such great respect for the series that they will make it feel like an actual RPG—in fact, it will probably feel even more like a “NieR” title. They think that those who play and enjoy the new game will also enjoy playing the original.

The new title is connected to the previous NieR, but not in relation to the story. The new game takes place in NieR’s future, so it’s perfectly safe to play NieR after the new one. On the other hand, it may be more confusing for those who have played the first NieR.

There's alot more in the link about the decisions they made in comparison to the old game. Might help.

Nice character design also.
