The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

I've been kinda lost with some of the terms said in here.

Open World? ...... Bigger maps?

AAA? ...... high quality game?

Porting? ...... making a game for one console then bring the foundation over to another console?

I'm I correct with the answers?

You're pretty spot on.

Open world is like Burnout Paradise or Need For Speed Most Wanted/Carbon compared to Need For Speed Hot Pursuit or Forza.

AAA usually means high budget / high expectations, those game are expected to move millions of copies

And you're exactly right with porting.

Knack was dope but for me it's not worth dropping $60 for a launch title game.

I'll wait for it to hit PS+

Gotcha.

The new NFS will be open world too unlike the previous Hot Pursuit.

Here is my SD Comic Con report:

-Asked several Sony employees and their PR rep at their both today and none of them had info on where the hard drive bay was located on the PS4 and what type of hard drive connection the PS4 uses. Some of them didn't even know that the internal hard drive could be upgraded.
-Played Drive Club and just as I expected it's not a racing simulator game and is more of NFS or Burnout paradise type racing game.I'll download the free PS+ edition but honestly can't see myself playing it that much.
-Knack is a nice game but didn't knock my socks off graphically for a next gen PS4 game.I'll pick it up if it drops to the $19-$25 range around black Friday or will wait for it to become a free PS+ download able game.
-Have no interest and did not bother lining up to play OctoDad.
-Really liked how the Dual Shock 4 felt in hands while playing.
-PS4 prototype consoles at the both were behind closed glass cases so I could not touch and get up close & personal with the PS4.

Watched an exclusive SDCC 15 minute Watchdogs video that showed new footage of free roam and multi player.Really was impressed with what I saw and can't wait to play this game. The Ubisoft reps were strict and nobody in the viewing room of about 25 people could not even pull out their iphone or smartphone to even check the time. The had a promo going with amazon.com for some cool shirts for Watchdogs & Assassins Creed for pre ordering both Watch Dogs & Assaisns Creed 4 you got 1 shirt for each game.I already have Watchdogs pre ordered at my loal Gamestop so I will be canceling my amazon pre order. Assasins Creed I've never been a fan of the series.

Both the Playstation & Xbone booth's were literally behind each other.Trust me when I say the Playstation booth areas had the most interest and longest wait time lines for Knack, Drive Club, Gran Turismo 6, Beyond: 2 souls.I even chatted with a Xbone rep and she was obviously annoyed and not to happy about people asking her about Xbone's DRM and 24 hour check in policies since most people at the convention were confused or didn't know about Microsoft reversal about their policies after E3.

Can't wait to attend SD Comic Con again tomorrow & Sunday

I can't wait for DriveClub. I'm glad its more like NFS. I can't play those Simulator type games. :smokin

That sucks to be an Xbox rep right now. I know a lot of people who still don't know about the reversals. Most of them rely on word of mouth and don't both doing online research.

This and Killzone: Shadowfall are 2 games I'm getting at launch.

Heck I'll still be busy and playing GTA V at the same time on my PS3.

I'm thinking it's best if Driveclub sucks so Evolution makes a next gen Motorstorm.

From something sony stated before every ps4 game will be required to be able to played/streamed on the vita similar to the wii u, unless the game requires the camera.

It's not a port. It's a full-fledged PS4 game.

Reading that article says otherwise

Driveclub, (also stylised #DRIVECLUB),[1] is an upcoming racing video game published by Sony Computer Entertainment and developed by Evolution Studios for the PlayStation 4. Driveclub was officially announced during the PlayStation 4 press conference on 20 February 2013.[2]
Driveclub differs from Evolution Studios previous racing franchise, MotorStorm, in that it will focus on road racing rather than off-road. It will not be classified as a racing simulator like the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series, but as a rival to Grid 2.[3] There will also be a team racing element to the game, with players managing racing teams and using the PlayStation Plus network and PlayStation 4's "share" features to manage teams with other players.[4]
At E3 2013 Sony announced that PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a special edition of Driveclub. The PlayStation Plus edition will have the same mechanics featured in the retail game, but a limited selection of cars and tracks. [5]

How The Crew was ported to PlayStation 4

View media item 502746

In general, from a performance perspective, it seems that Sony's SDK is just about where it needs to be right now, in contrast to the Microsoft equivalent, where techs are still working on very significant improvements that will drive improved GPU throughput. We asked the Reflections team if they expect their optimisation efforts to be aided by revised, improved versions of the Sony development environment. In essence, is the GPU "driver" still being optimised?
With the basic porting complete, the Ubisoft Reflections team is now ramping up its staff in order to complete the PS4 game ready for the Q1 2014 release, but the core engineering effort in moving The Crew across to PlayStation 4 was accomplished in six months with a team of just two to three people working on it. Overall, Reflections felt that the process of porting over the PC codebase was fairly simple and straightforward.

What we didn't find out is how the Xbox One version is faring, or who is producing it. Our bet is on the Ivory Tower studio producing it in tandem with the PC version, owing to the use of the DirectX 11 API on two platforms. But Xbox One and PS4 both have much in common from an architectural standpoint, and questions we have about collaboration between the console teams resulting in optimisations common to both console versions remain unanswered for now.
Simon O'Connor did point out that Reflections considers its work on The Crew to end up being much more than a simple, feature-complete port. This is an opportunity to explore what the new hardware is available of, and there's a sense that the PlayStation 4's graphics hardware is not being fully exploited.

"The PS4's GPU is very programmable. There's a lot of power in there that we're just not using yet. So what we want to do are some PS4-specific things for our rendering but within reason - it's a cross-platform game so we can't do too much that's PS4-specific," he reveals.

"There are two things we want to look into: asynchronous compute where we can actually run compute jobs in parallel... We [also] have low-level access to the fragment-processing hardware which allows us to do some quite interesting things with anti-aliasing and a few other effects."

The standard porting process at the beginning of the Xbox 360/PS3 era seemed to be a case of targeting a lead platform and then removing features for subsequent ports, or alternatively taking a hit to performance. While multi-platform next-gen titles see the consoles take on target rather than lead platform status, there's clearly the realisation that the new machines are capable of more, and that much is to be gained by exploring platform-specific features. If Reflections can indeed achieve feature parity with the PC version, and then tailor the codebase to suit the strengths of Mark Cerny's "super-charged PC architecture", The Crew should be one to watch out for.

I want to say it's a good read but the article is tech heavy so be warned. Had to go over certain bits so many times and gave up on others but I got some good quotes

The quotes above and the general vibe of the article make the PS4 sound powerful, efficient and with lots of potential for more. We heard all this before but it's good to see more devs actually say it.

It took only 2-3 people to port the game in 6 months and they're not even scratching the surface of the tools that the PS4 has. I honestly think we're in for a treat next gen.

This is legit the first post on the last page, knowing its a port lowers the standards for me but it can still be good
