The real question is, why are you worrying about what the next man does with his money and why are you in the next man's pockets?

Not that serious, fam.  People have been doubling up on shoes for decades.  Who cares?
People have not been doubling up for decades...don't be ridiculous.  The other parts of your statement are pure ignorance.

In every single thread there are users talking about copping two pairs and what they do with them whether the infamous "1 to rock 1 to stock" line and/or using them as trade bait. Was a thread really needed? Are you that out of the loop?
Honestly I am a bit out of the loop on the whole trade bait.  I'm a lil old school we never traded sneakers.  I was simply starting a discussion.  The whole 1 to rock 1 to stock thing is also something we did not do.  I'm old dog...lol.   Some of the threads I see on here and a lot of the posts I see are here are not really needed.  This is a forum where one engages in dialogue with others so  I figured it was ok to post this.

Ok, so people haven't been doubling up on shoes since the 90s?  Yes, I'm the one being ridiculous...

Time to abandon thread.

What the heck is this thread about? Most ridiculous question I've heard in a long time SMH.

You said IV's? Fine, let's go with IV's. Here are some of my doubles of my IV's.

I'll start with the Cool Greys. I picked up 2 pairs of these on release day in '04. One pair is DS, the other pair is beat to death. I hooped in them which is why they look like that. I definitely got my money's worth out of this shoe. Thank God I have a 2nd pair because the shoe is indeed one of my faves. If I didn't have a second pair (that only cost like $125 back then) then I'd be paying $400+ for them now.

Here are some more of my doubles of the IV's. All of the Thunder's and Blk/Red/Grey IV's are DS. One of the Tour's are VNDS (worn once) and one of the Black Cats are NDS. Now, I have no intentions on wearing the Thunders and/or Bred IV's since they chip like crazy. So why do I have 2 pairs of each? Well for starters I'm heavy into collecting Jordan IV's so I'm going to have at least 1 DS pair in my collection. The other pair is for possible trade bait in the future. I've been here for 12 years. I have a clear understanding of how this shoe game works. In a couple years, the value of these shoes will be worth something (see Tour Yellow IV). I still need Doerenbecher IV's. I'd be willing to trade Bred IV's + Thunder's + cash instead of paying that God awful $600+ for a sz.12. If I only bought 1 pair like you're foolishly suggesting, I'd be out of a pair if I were to ever get rid of them for whatever reason. As far as Black Cats and Tours, go check the price of the Tour's. I paid $135 for both pairs on release day (I actually bought 13 pairs on release day and helped out many NTers). If I ever need to get rid of a pair, I'll still have 1 in my collection. If I ever decide to rock the other pair again, I'll still have a DS pair for whatever reason. Same as Black Cats. Remember, a lot of us collectors don't mind rocking Roshe's or some trainers or something. I don't need to be seen in my J's. For the pairs that I do decide to rock, I definitely make sure I have at least a 2nd pair for the future. If the shoe is limited/QS, I'll try and have 2 pairs. A backup pair is always a necessity for actual collecting purposes to be honest.
If it was so ridiculous why would you take the time to respond in such great detail?  I'm from a day when people did not collect shoes.  If someone was collecting shoes back then I never knew of it.  You wouldn't just go to your boys crib and they had a pile of boxes of Js.  I was simply posting a thread to try and gain some insight to why people doubled up (re-sellers excluded).  I thought to myself surely this cannot be greed.  As time has gone on I did become aware that people collect sneakers but it wasn't several of the same pair/same colorway.  I am not a collector but I have many pairs of sneakers ..Jordans mainly.  I wear them all and when I start to notice one becoming less worn I usually give them to a less fortunate friend which is how I came to have my first pair of Jordans many years ago.  I joined NT because I thought it was a forum for sneaker talk and leads on certain releases.  A lot of what I see going on here is pissing moaning and berating others when you disagree with them.  Either way I really appreciate your response despite the obnoxiousness.

For the most part, I tend to always respond in great detail. Documentation beats conversation my friend. It took me 10min to snap those pics which is nothing.

How old are you buddy? 40? Collecting has been going on for 30 years. Why do I say that? I'm 27 y/o and I was born in 1986. There are DS Jordan I's from 1985 in many NTers collections. There are DS AF1's from 1982 floating around. You say you're from a day when people did not collect shoes. People YOU know did not collect shoes, that doesn't mean that shoe collecting wasn't happening. I remember back in 2002 or so, there was a NTer named Stoker55. He had like 6 pairs of OG Carmine VI's and like 4-5 pairs of OG Grapes. My point is doubling and even tripling up on shoes of the exact same colorway isn't new as that was over a decade ago. I personally enjoy the collecting aspect. I love the Lightning IV's. Am I going to wear an all yellow shoe? Not likely. But I would love to have a pair or 2 of these in my collection. Like I said, not all of us collectors are necessarily into wearing their shoes. I will be getting Doerenbecher IV's this summer. I will NOT put this clown looking shoe on my feet but I definitely need it for my collection. If I had the means to snag a 2nd pair I definitely would.

I am 35.  And like I said if collecting has been going on from then to now then I did not know about it.  I have been wearing Jordans for a long time and even when I could not afford them my friends who could were wearing them.  Nobody I knew doubled up on them or had a collection of them.   I guarantee you that it was not as widespread and popular as it is now.  Again thanks for your input.

To me for the most part double is just the cool thing to do now. Reason being you can get any shoe you want due to the internet, which is a luxury we didn't have at one time in shoes. With the restoration services and other people who hoard, I person would never buy more than one pair of a shoe. Then again I haven't beat a pair of shoes since I started paying for my own and definitely not a 150+ dollar pair of shoes. So the whole one to rock and one to cop thing is not for me but to each its own.

OP is correct, I'm 29 and no one in many cities (Nyc, Ct, FL) i lived collected, if you were fortunate to get a pair, you wore them immediately and balled in them. If there were collectors in the 80s, 90s when I was a kid-teens then they were very very few far in between. Why do you think the 2001 Breds & Royal 1s sat around ? I remember my father buying me the Playoff 13s days after the release, the he got games 13s did not sell out they were all dubbed hideous when they first came out. The 12s same thing, they sat ! The only Jordan I can remember selling out quickly was the XI's in 95-96, and it wasn't due to everyone buying them to stock in there closets !!

I never buy more than one pair of the same shoe in the same colorway.  Given the fact that I'm not hard on the stuff that I buy, whether it be clothing or shoes, it's just doesn't make sense.  Also, I'm not a collector and I wear everything....eventually.

Dudes going at OP like he threw a brick through your bedroom window or something.....it's not that serious, he asked a question that he felt was legitimate enough to ask. People on here...:smh:

..to add to this, as far as why people double up, I think for some it could be attributed to a "timeless gem" situation where people are so drawn to a shoe that they liked and/or had for so long that they buy 2 or more to pacify the long desire to have that particular shoe. I've doubled up on alot of sneakers over the years, main reason is it's nice to have the shoe to go to for wear...and also a shoe you can have in brand new condition to signify your aesthetic appreciation for that said shoe.

I started doubling up back in 2001 with the black/red XI's because that was my all time favorite shoe plus I figured it would be a long long time before they're released again. Funny thing is, I was 14 at the time so I bought one pair my size with the other a size larger because I knew I'd wear them to death & I wanted to bring out the other pair in the coming years. My personal reason now to double up (when I can) is to have one to wear & a DS or NDS pair for my collection of all OG colorways of Jordan's 1 through 13, which are my favorites.

Back in the 90's I had cousins & oldheads who would double up on Jordan's to ball in & wear casually. So it has been going on for quite some time now, just for some people they weren't collecting.

OP is not correct.  It's what he saw surrounding him and what you saw surrounding you.  The internet wasn't around to the point where you could search for other people's collection around the world.  You were stuck to just the people you knew around your area.  Now it's true, Jordan's did not sell out like they do now and the hype was not like it is now.  But collecting Jordan's has been around for quite some time.  Maybe not as widespread as it is now but it's always been a part of the culture.  Like AirForce1King said, how do you think people have DS OG's 1-10 in their collection.

I'm 31 and I do double up on certain colorways and numbers that have some special meaning to me.  I like the comfort of knowing that I can wear a pair as much as I want and still have one to pull out once the other gets retired.

Not sure why you care how others spend their money, and no it is not as bad as re-selling. Some of us are collectors, some of us are collectors who also rock our kicks, some of us just rock them and buy them for style. If you want a pair for your collection but also want a pair to wear, you rock one and stock one.

Me personally, it depends on the shoe. I one day hope to have a good sized collection of kicks, but right now the amount of pairs I buy depends on the shoe itself. If I really feel a certain colorway enough to make it a "collectable" I will double up on it, if it's something I want to rock but bears no collecting significance to me I will buy one pair.

Honestly, what Jordan shoe can you buy at this point that is truly collectible. In a sense there aren't any true OG shoes being released because jordan does not play anymore. Plus, in something as trivial as shoes a shoe is only worth what it is to the individual.

people been doubling up forever...worked at footaction in the late 90's and people were doubling then....just wasnt alot of people doing it as maybe the case now....

i sold double ups of alot of those jordan lows summer of 98 ...maybe you just didnt pay attention like u do now...but i worked at footaction and footlocker 98-02 and people were doubling up then... u gotta remember the internet and social media and pics floating of double ups wasnt like it is now

IF this was directed at me ..I in no way indicated for one second that I care how others spend their money.  And that goes for the other fella who stated "why are you in the next mans pocket" ...Really?  I'm in someones pocket? lol...

lol @ all these paragraphs upon paragraphs defending buying too many of one shoe. It's nice to have multiples of some shoes imo, the ones you can't live without, or ones you like to rock for different purposes. I just think it's a little obsessive when u have 2 in saran wrap trash bags with silica packs, 1 to cut the grass in, 1 to rock, 1 to change the babies diaper in, etc.

Here's what savvy collectors do:

Buy one pair at retail to keep on ice.

Buy multiple pairs of the high quality replicas for every day use.

Oops, guess I spilled the beans!!

I have never doubled up, just because I used to rotate shoes so much, it didn't make sense. Now I don't like that many Jordans, so I wouldn't mind having two pairs of everything I do like.
