What was your starting salary after college?

Graduated last year with a degree in Occupational Safety & Health and I am currently interning. $20/hr + Apartment provided.

Bump.

I've been looking into working in the government. I graduate in December with a degree in Business with a concentration in marketing and I live in the DMV area. I look into usajob.gov and see so many positions for recent grads but, the requirements are a degree so I'm always sol. Gonna apply for the trainee positions now I guess.

Within the next 3-4 years I want to move out to California tbh and have some exp in web design
You aren't reading the requirements correctly. Most job reqs for recent grads say as long as you obtain you degree within the next 9 months or the past 9 months, something to that extent.

Ok, Im just gonna start shooting 3 pointers at the postings. Hopefully things workout. These government jobs take 10 months to actually contact you

Doesn't take 10 months to be contacted lol between 1-3months max. Just apply for everything doesn't matter, your likelihood of being contacted needs to be as high as possible. Iv'e applied to atleast 30+ positions (probably much more) and have only landed 2 jobs on USAJOBS.

Will post my starting salary in a few weeks in negotiation process now .

Hmmm I'm just trying to get into the industry by anyway. It sucks that majority of the jobs are in NYC/Cali. I live close to DC and its not that much stuff for marketing here. If I had the $$$$ to move to a different state I would

there are a decent amount of opportunities that list marketing as a preferred degree in the DC area...many communications/outreach/advocacy jobs have them, unless you are checking for corporate/agency stuff ...

NGOs/non-profits/trade associations etc all have external affairs/development (fundraising)/business development departments where marketing backgrounds are not uncommon

*also since contracting is massive out here, proposal writers are always needed, whether it be large or small contracting firms

Yea I was looking into ad agency type stuff. But really Imjust trying to fit in anywhere since I get my degree in december

How many of you guys send cover letters out with every app? I cant see sending out 100 apps all with different cover letters

I can't stand cover letters. I never look at them when looking at applications. Civil Engineer so might be different for other majors/jobs

When I was in school they were telling us that HRs were going away from even looking at Cover Letters. I'm sure different industries will have different standards. Coincidentally, the place that I got a job with didnt get a Cover Letter from me. *shrugs*

I'm determined to get a govt job so im on USAJobs a lot. Tired of this contracting life. I send out cover letters with my apps. Since the positions im applying for are all pretty similar, I only make minor changes and add a blurb about the agency. Its almost like a specialized form letter. Out of 4 apps i got 1 referred but still no contact, 1 not referred, and 2 received.

no previous experience. I am not on the creative side, I purchase national air time for several clients. all you need is a college degree for entry level positions (non-creative).

Out of curiosity what agency are you at? :nerd:

I'm also a creative and I started last year at 50k.

Now I make slighty more :x It's just a matter of time and moving agencies to get a decent raise.

About to graduate in December and I need someone to critique my resume..

I've had it reviewed by about 4-5 different places (school, managers, etc.) but I want an outside opinion.

I am part of the national buying group, not creative. I work for a company that is part of groupm.

how come?

...asking because I've seen quite a few contracting opportunities that i feel like would be interesting
Recompetes are a *****. Company has been the incumbent for the contract for the past 14 years, and its very likely we'll win, but we've been on extensions all year. Its stressful not knowing if youll have a job at the end of the year.

That and i hate being at the bottom of the hierarchy. CIV employees basically undermine the contractors doing the work for them. Probably stems from them being belittled by vets. Looking to go Govt and get out of the military environment.

Usually have more earning potential when your a contractor. But when your company cant give you a signifacant raise, and you're qualified for higher pay in a similar position with the Govt, you tend to want to get out.

Though it all depends on the company and their situation. Wouldn't lump all contracting oppourtunies in the same boat though they can run into very similar implications.
