102982: Today Is My Late Brother's Birthday. Reaching Out For Support.

Good share Jesus. My brother & I are former addicts. My brother was a lot worse off then me. I've been clean for 18 years & my brother is hitting somewhere between 11-13 years. I actually started volunteering a lot as a part of my recovery & ended up working as a volunteer (outside of my regular employment) for 14 years.

Anyway, around my way there are several playgrounds in memoriam of a deceased child. One in particular is really nice called Annie's Playground (link to site below). One thing that would be nice if could open a skate area/park in your brother's name & maybe hold an annual skate contest or showcase with proceeds going to a recovery charity perhaps. You "might could" involve a kick starter campaign to build it. This would of course involve you local municipality.

Included below are some ideas on what the skatepark could look like. I know Rob Dyrdek opened a nice one in his home state of Ohio. I also included vids of some skate parks in & around the Baltimore area. There's also one in Towson, MD near a Target but I couldn't find some good media on it.

How cool would it be to have a skate park in memoriam of your brother? Might be a little grand in thought, but thought I'd share...

PSK,

Thanks so much man. This is exactly what I was looking for to get the creative juices going and point me in the direction of a greater goal. I have just been doing things and it felt like I was wandering around aimlessly.

That's a wild story and you must have some serious determination to persevere through all of that.

I know exactly where Kettering, OH is....I was supposed to go there for a month on work travel. That's awesome and I am totally feeling your idea, no matter how large of an undertaking it will be. That would be a pretty dope end goal to accomplish and have something like that to be a permanent fixture for years to come.

Much appreciation my fellow Orioles fan. I will come follow your links/videos once I get off work.

You know Jesus, on a lark, you should try reaching out to Dyrdek to see if he's willing to invest or help. He does a lot of work getting skate parks opened nationwide. Here's his foundation's website. I bet they might help if you got a good game plan together. If this happens, you gotta get a statue or bronze plaque somewhere at the park.

Awesome! I'm flying to Michigan tonight and will review all of this from the hotel and get grinding on it!

Thanks so much man. This is the kind of sounding board I was hoping to find to help generate some sort of direction and ideas. Much appreciation.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I don't know too much about skating, but I would definitely recommend PSK's idea of contacting Rob Dyrdek's foundation. Just from seeing his shows he SEEMS like a good dude that would be down to support an event like the one you're thinking of if you have some concrete ideas.

I don't have a Facebook but I would be down to donate some money. I also do graphic design so any graphics (flyers, IG photos etc.) you might need I would be happy to design - for free of course. Wish I could be more help but I can't think of any concrete ideas right now. I follow you on IG (Sdevine70) so if I think of anything specific I'll reply in this thread or hit you on there. Good luck getting this thing moving!

Good looks Nowtizness.

Double D, I appreciate it man. I'll definitely be interested in a design for a flyer once I get the date and location confirmed.

Yeah I know a lot of folks don't have FB, hell I didn't for the last 3 years....but I had to swallow my ego and make one again to properly organize this.

If you are interested in a social experiment....gather around!

Watch and see how many people hit me and post in my job thread. Folks are so quick to reach to ask for something. Reluctant to offer though. Quite comical.

This is really commendable what you're doing for your brother man...sorry for your loss. I'm still in school so my money is kind of tight but I can donate a small something if you have PayPal or anything set up to help fund the initiative. I liked the page on FB you posted, and I'm not into skating or any of that at all so I wouldn't know who to contact but I think that the Rob Dyrdek foundation would be a great source to contact, also maybe some folks at the Parks/Rec center in surrounding communities.

I did some googling and theres a DMV local professional skater named Darren Harper who has run a camp in the past in the area for minority kids and underprivileged youth so he may be someone to contact or his representatives since he's got ties to the area and the skating community down there.

This event was from last yr but there's contact info on this page: http://d4smllc.com/2012/06/professi...-1st-annual-free-skate-camp-in-washington-dc/

Here's his website: http://www.darrenharper.com/ and

Awesome. Thanks so much for the information.

I am currently working on drafting up a petition to have a local skate park named in his memory and got the ball rolling on relationships with builders/sponsors that I know currently. A friend is speaking with local officials to garner some traction on this cause.

Thanks to those who have responded thus far. Really appreciate it.

Hey man, I'm the one who suggested that you should contact Palace5 in DC in the PM. They have pro skaters that they sponsor and I would think they would support your cause. You can count on my signature for the petition. I may be able to spread the word where I work as well.

Keep up the great work.

Anybody that wants to help, it takes 10 seconds to sign this petition.

Good looking out my man! Thanks for keeping this thing alive while I was a way!

Awesome my man. I definitely appreciate any and all support. I am reaching out to some of the local Skate Shops in the area: Pit Crew, Palace 5ive, Magic Bullet, etc. and some of the local companies as well.

Good looking out to all who have signed!

I'll be doing a shirt for this year's event...(maybe if Meth lets me incorporate NT into the design I can.....):

Here was the shirt from the last event:

For those who support and lend a hand, I'll keep tabs on it and see if you would like a shirt or some other way I can show my sincere appreciation.

Many thanks!

Didn't know this thread was 3 weeks old, wish I could have seen it earlier.

Signed, R.I.P to your bro.
