OK, so obviously we live in a fast food world where people are constantly going the cheap route.

I know there's plenty of NTers that actually care about what we put into our bodies, but also will struggle with the amount of money we spend and waste on fast food as well.

This needs to be the place for everyone to discuss how they stay on track with healthy eating and share recipes/ideas/techniques on home cooking of healthy meals AND share money saving tips/swaps they've used themselves

There's a ton of resources out there for us to utilize, but this way everyone can rely on each other.

I've been trying to cut out red meat as much as possible. Using ground turkey on common foods we like to eat is a much healthier choice 99/1 extra lean Jennie-O found at target is PERFECT for some home made tacos, burgers, etc.

Let's make it happen. :smokin

i gave up red meat but sometimes i still want a burger

most times i eat chicken or yea ground turkey

also use spinach more

I'm definitely trying to improve my diet. I don't eat enough fruits and veggies and i eat entirely too much fast food. I have a high metabolism so I'm still in seemingly decent shape. Fatty foods are just so satisfying smh.

I'm 25 so my metabolism is starting to slow down a little. I try to limit my junk food intake these days.  I eat a lot of egg whites, lean meats, fruits and veggies, steel cut oats, and greek yogurt. I love beer, but I've cut down on that a lot too.  If I go out drinking I'll stuff my pockets with those $1 shot bottles from the liquor store and maybe drink 1 beer at the bar.  The 24 hour pizza and bagel places in the parking lot will be the death of me though.

I need to gain weight though. Being 64 years old and being 6'5 and 146 lbs is not a good look. Does the ground turkey have less flavor than red meet? Can I substitue it for all read meats?

off red meat? chill....i need my steaks

Steaks are the ONLY type of red meat I eat currently on a "regular" basis.

Other than that, Turkey or Chicken is always used in the home made recipes I cook with.

I like using bread crumbs and an egg or two in a lb of ground turkey to make burgers. The crumbs and egg help keep it together. The worst part about it is actually pattying them out by hand because it's so damn cold, so people may want to use gloves.

also use spinach more

Baby spinach is one of my addictions. I prefer it over lettuce in most cases where possible.

The turkey does have more of a dry and bland taste, but I use a ton of spices/seasoning to give it variety and help give it more flavor. The positive nutrition facts outweigh them by so much.

Anybody prefer Whole Foods or Trader Joes over the typical grocery stores? I generally go there for some items not able to find in stores, but it really is much more expensive for some alternatives at regular spots.

Bison steaks at Whole Foods are the BEST. :smokin

Season the turkey exactly the same as you would for red meat.

6'5" 146? Really???? That's close to being 2-dimensional on some flat stanley steez

Saying "we off red meat" really means "trying to stay off red meat as much as possible but when i'm out and want that greasy hamburger I will enjoy it because I eat healthy on a regular basis and will treat myself today".

Let's get some recipes cookin in here. Pun intended.

Not for me. I eat red meat at least twice a week. I eat chicken a lot more due to its versatility, but i'm never giving up red meat.

I need some tips on how to eat healthy without breaking my budget.

it's soooo expensive to eat healthy, and so cheap to eat those fast food joints.

i want to lose 20 pounds, and i've been running and excercising but i also know that it's also diet.

I NEED help with the food/diet part....

I don't want to give it up, I'd just rather consume it on a much smaller basis. I'd like to add tofu to my diet but can't get with it.

Buying in bulk for items may seem more expensive now, but in the long term it'll be the way to go. Checkout local ads for weekly sales etc on packages of meat and stock up when possible and freeze them. Cook a big batch of chicken for the week and use different flavors on each one to kind of help your taste buds from getting bored.

Buy generic if possible and really learn how to properly read nutrition labels on foods. Try to get foods with lower sodium and the lower carbs the better for losing.

Stay away from pre packaged stuff for the sodium part. Buying everything fresh is the absolute best way to go!

Never ate meat in my life (other than fish. No seed food tho: crab, lobster, etc). Cant miss what I never had.

Red meat is not unhealthy bro...it's actually good for you, specially if you are working out, natural protein >>>> any protein powder you can find.

Read up on Paleo, I'm giving that a try..

The getting in shape thread has a lot of good info but the easiest steps to start are 1. count your calories (pick a range you want to be in and try and stick to it) 2. drink a ton of water (only exceptions are protein shakes, coffee and tea) and 3. cut down sugar and junk as much as possible.

I rarely eat red meat....

and then summer hits...

and it's ballgame.

Ground Turkey, Fish (Catfish, Tilapia, Salmon, Cod) and Chicken stay in the rotation year round

QFT. Red Meat is not bad for you in moderation. Also, if its a steak just get lean cuts. But all this workout powders and supplements people put in their body is far worse then red meat. People have ate red meat for a very long time, its not the meat its how much you intake

After I was told I was Malnourished and dehydrated, I fixed my diet. I ca't exactly give up red meat just yet, so I still eat steaks on occasion.

I basically cut fast food down to a zero. And I stopped cooking with a bunch of oils and salts. (I still eat salt because it is important)

So my diet currently goes something like this

Breakfast

-Eggs, mostly hard boiled but occasionally scrambled.

-Organic Honey Crisp apple. (Organic ones are great)

- A naval orange

- A glass of water/milk

Snacks in between meals

-Mixed nuts

-Another honey crisp apple

-Water crackers

Lunch

- Obviously this is different everyday, but I always try to bring a filling meal from home with me and a bottle of water

Dinner

- Similar to lunch, I try to cook lean meats with at least two vegetables.

And I try to stop eating past 8, since I'm active most of the night I see no need stopping at 7.

I have since gotten back to health, and better than before.

Start of team healthy eating?

Lucky you. I wish I had it like that.

It's not the fact that its unhealthy as much as it is how it's treated and handled and the fact that the other stuff is actually healthier for you.

I wish I could cut meats all together and go for an entirely plant based diet. There's a really good documentary about it but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me right now.
