its hard to talk about baseball player's salaries since there is no cap, but if signing kershaw to $300million doesn't affect the way they sign other players or spend on personnel (scouts/coaches/etc.) then its hard to argue against it.

i do agree, though. no player is worth that much money.

Exactly how I feel. Being realistic though, ideally you sign him for less but when push cornes to shove, that man is going to get paid and deservedly so. Hopefully he gets resigned before he becomes a free agent though.

Some players are worth superstar money and deserve it. Some players are overpaid and don't deserve the money they get. Imo Kershaw deserves whatever big contract he ultimately gets.

To use a basketball comparison, a guy like lebron is worth a huge max contract, a guy like joe Johnson isn't worth that same max contract. Big spending is cool when its on the right guy imo.

Well said Cedric, big spending is partly justified when it's the right person. In this case, we're talking about the best pitcher it baseball who's been crazy consistent.

When it comes to Kersh, men lie women lie but numbers, for the most part, don't; he's the best pitcher in baseball.

To me Kershaw is the rare player, seems like a real good overall dude, real hard worker and committed to getting better as well. Those intangibles come into play as well.

its great players I would be reluctant to give big money to even though their really good because id fear once they get the big money they'll get lazy and to comfortable after they get paid.

Giving Kershaw big money isn't like an angels Pujols deal and possibly whatever deal cano gets this winter in free agency where I don't see them being worth a long term investment at their age.

Sucks the seasons over but unlike 09 where it felt like that group did all they could do with what they had considering McCourt was to cheap to make upgrades, the future looks very bright.

I hate so say I told everyone, but I informed everyone this series was over last Tuesday. Carlos Beltran and the Cards are making Kershaw look like Daisuke Matsuzaka. The batting has been completely inconsistent and trash throughout this series.

At least the Dodgers won't have to give Kershaw the 30 mil per year deal with this garbage performance. Kershaw is showing how in big games, his testicles shrink up. Gonna be a long offseason for this team.

I know I'm in the minority, but I think the Dodgers need to get rid of Kemp. He had 1 lucky season and has done nothing since.

Ron Darling has finally said something i agree with, "This is a disaster game for the Dodgers." At least we're all gonna save the money that was gonna be spent on World Series tickets.

Per dylan hernandez------guerrero deal official...that didnt take long...start him at ss and move hanram to 3rd...pls!!! 4/28...allegedely.

 Been bamboozled way too many times with this "signing", won't believe it until it's announced officially.

Even then just need to point his out...

You want to put a career second baseman, who's never played MLB, to shortstop?, ok. What's in that 40?

Guerrero is going to play second, and Hanley isn't ready to move to third base... unfortunately.

His body and lack of range is ready to move to third base, but Hanley's ego isn't ready to take that hit. #knowemsayin

If Hanley hits like he did this year, let em play wherever he wants. Moving him to 3rd isn't going to make him happy and you'll see a decrease in his production IMO

I'll put up with the occasional stupid errors for that offense he brings. Is he going to cost you some games with his defense, probably. But his offense will trump that

Not saying Donnie is great, because he isn't, but you have to ask this once again: "How the **** does Ned Colletti keep holding on to the GM job?".

Anyway, said this in the MLB thread but how crappy must Gonzo, Beckett and Crawford feel right now with Boston in the World Series.

Valentine and those involved in the "Punto Deal" were the reason, according to Boston media and fanbase, that the team finished in last place. Cancer gone, new attitude, and hoisting the hardware in about a week. Damb.

Apparently this happened today

‪#‎Dodgers‬ held a press conference today. In what quickly got awkward Mattingly stated how he felt like a lame duck this year and was visibly upset with contract status. He made it pretty clear he would not come back on a one year deal. Colletti says issue will be resolved quickly.

Hmm after his bone head mistake in game 1 and throughout the season I think he should be happy he has a job for now.

That press conference was awkward.
Woulda loved for Magic to come out mid Donnie rant and in Vince McMahon style say yoooooooure fired!!

MLB lifer, he'll get another shot somewhere, probably one of the sought after spots that is open right now. Could see him landing with the Nats.

He's got to get credit for working with what Ned Colletti throw's his way,

Dodgers roster is stacked when healthy, but as we all saw, health was a major issue in 2013.

Nothing like working with a roster stocked with "grit".

I hope Donnie stays... the players respect him.

However... a long-time friend of Magic, Colletti, Lasorda? That's gotta be tempting. Clubhouse would be off the chain (for better or worse) with Dusty.

Bench coach and advanced scout fired today. Both were reportedly close to Donnie. Coletti is definitely " resolving things quickly."

The Dodgers and the pursuit of Japanese pitching star Masahiro Tanaka

This is the place where I would like to share my incredible personal connections to reveal the Dodgers’ double-secret plans to snare Japanese star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.

Alas, there is none to offer. But, come on, does this not look like the most obvious move since Brad Pitt sidled up to Angelina Jolie? If the Dodgers’ new ownership taught us one thing in the last year, it’s that they are not afraid to spend in the international market.

The fact that they gambled on Hyun-Jin Ryu ($36 million) and Yasiel Puig ($42 million) last year and won, only figures to encourage their international efforts. They’ve already spent on Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero ($28 million) this off-season.

And now comes the next latest, greatest thing in Tanaka.

The right-hander has had himself a season to remember for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Japanese Pacific League. All he did was go 24-0 with a 1.27 earned-run average during the regular season. He is currently 2-0 in the playoffs after throwing a complete-game, 12-strikeout 2-1 victory Sunday in the Japanese Fall Classic.

The Dodgers have been unusually open in their interest in signing Tanaka. At that infamous season wrap-up press conference, General Manager Ned Colletti was asked about the team’s interest.

“We've scouted him a lot, we're very much aware of him,” said Colletti. “We saw him as recently as two days ago.”

The Dodgers currently have three locks for their 2014 rotation – Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Ryu. Chad Billingsley and Josh Beckett are coming off surgery and their status is unknown, and thus unreliable. Ricky Nolasco was a nice midseason pickup, but he struggled at the end and is a free agent who might want more years than the Dodgers are interested in signing him to. Chris Capuano and Edinson Volquez are free agents with uncertain L.A. futures.

Tanaka is projected as a front-of-the-rotation starter. If he’s something less than Texas Rangers star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish, most still see him in residing in the same neighborhood.

Masanori Murakami, the first Japanese citizen to play in the majors when he pitched for the Giants in 1964 and '65, is now a national broadcaster in Japan and his high on Tanaka.

“He has such great control and is so good at hitting the corners, that he is only overpowering hitters when he gets into a pinch and really needs a strikeout,” Murakami told Sports on Earth. “Darvish has a tendency to struggle with his control in the early innings of games, but Tanaka does not. He is very consistent.”

These superstar Japanese pitchers have had mixed results coming over to the majors. Hideo Nomo and Darvish made smooth transitions; Hideki Irabu and Daisuke Matsuzaka disappointed.

The Dodgers have shown they’re not shy about taking their best educated gambles on international prospects, which doesn’t mean they necessarily have the inside track.

The Rangers paid $52 million for their winning post on Darvish and then signed him for $60 million. Tanaka doesn’t figure to come any cheaper.

Plus, the posting system is close to being revamped. Reportedly instead of one winning post, there will be three finalists for the player to choose from, the intent to get more money to the player. The change would be immediate.

The Dodgers’ biggest competition for the winning bid figures to be that original free-spending club, the Yankees.

The New York rotation is in dire straits and signing Tanaka figures to be a higher priority for the Yankees. The Mets and Red Sox are also interested – and maybe the Angels – but Tanaka is said to favor signing with the Dodgers or Yankees.

That could prove an interesting financial battle.
MLB Rumors: Dodgers have “plan in place” to acquire David Price, Masahiro Tanaka
By Brandon Benson  on November 1, 2013@TheBTrain10

Two sources have told me that the Dodgers have a strategy heading into the 2013-2014 Major League Baseball offseason, and it is centered around bringing pitchers David Price  andMasahiro Tanaka  to Los Angeles without giving away their number one draft pick, and slot money.

The sources described the Dodgers as having a “plan in place” to pull off the blockbuster moves.

Earlier today, Peter Gammons wrote  about on GM informing him of the Dodgers’ strategy, in which they would trade for Tampa Bay Rays starter David Price, sign highly-touted Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, while avoiding giving up their aforementioned number one draft selection, and slot money.

Here is the plan:

Several GM’s around the league suggest the Dodgers could easily acquire the already-being-shopped Price for several minor league prospects, including 2012 first-rounder Corey Seager, 17-year-old lefty Julio Arias, and a pair from the following group- right-hander Zach Lee, outfielderJoc Pederson, or reliever Chris Withrow.

Part two of the blueprint is placing an $80 million bid for Japanese righty Masahiro Tanaka, which would in turn give the Dodgers four No. 1′s in their rotation, and a not-too-shabby Hyun-Jin Ryu as their number five.

Allow me to break down the plan:

David+Price+Division+Series+Tampa+Bay+Rays+um7KBgwUsfzl.jpg
The Rays are expected to deal Price, as track record has shown that the organization intends to trade their top-tier starting pitching two years prior to when the hurler is set to hit free agency. They did so with Matt Garza  after 2011, and James Shields  after 2012.

Price, only 28 and a former Cy Young  award winner, battled an injury to his trapezius on his pitching shoulder this past season, but still managed to record 27 starts (four of which for a complete game), and posted a 3.33 ERA, and a Major League-best 5.59 K/BB rate.

Over 6 big league seasons, Price has gone 71-39, logging a 3.19 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP. He has also pitched in 9 postseason games in his career, not including a gem he tossed in Game 163 for Tampa Bay this past season against the Rangers.

The Dodgers would be offering some high-profile prospects in the deal, but it makes sense as to why they would. The players they are giving up play positions that are already occupied by not only everyday players on the Dodgers, but stars– Corey Seager is a shortstop (Hanley Ramirez), Joc Pederson is a center fielder, primarily (Matt Kemp), and Lee and Arias are starters, which according to this projected trade, is a void that will not be needed to be filled in L.A. for years, and years, and years. It makes perfect sense for the Dodgers to make this trade.

As for Tanaka, just 25-years-old as of today, is rated as high, if not higher, than Yu Darvish  was coming out of Japan two years ago, and rightfully so. Last season, in Japan, Tanaka went 24-0, with a 1.27 ERA. Across 212 innings pitched, Tanaka allowed a grand total of 203 baserunners (0.94 WHIP), and a mere six home runs. He is the real deal, and is only entering his prime. Projections place Tanaka’s potential total contract from a Major League team to come across a 5-year span, meaning he would be with L.A. through 2018.

Money is not hard to come by in Dodgertown these days, so acquiring these high-level hurlers may not be too much of a challenge for GM Ned Colletti and his brass.

Let’s say they do land Price and Tanaka– L.A. now has 4-5 aces, which already adds to their stellar case as World Series favorites for next year. Take a look at their unbelievable would-be rotation, and how it will be there for years to come:

1. Clayton Kershaw  (25; free agent after 2015, however expected to agree on an extension this winter)

2. Zack Greinke  (30; free agent after 2019)

3. David Price (28; free agent after 2016)

4. Masahiro Tanaka (25; would-be free agent after 2018-2019)

5. Hyun-Jin Ryu (26; free agent after 2019)

That, my friends, is a little something I like to call, unfair.
