Athletics To Sign Nick Punto
By Zach Links [November 13 at 1:17pm CST]
The A's announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with a vesting option on 2015 with infielder Nick Punto. Punto's deal is for $2.75MM in 2014 and he'll have the opportunity to earn the same amount the following year, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). The option is based on days spent on the disabled list and comes with a $250K buyout if it's not exercised.

Athletics assistant GM David Forst tells Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter) that the signing has nothing to do with Jed Lowrie and insisted that he is still the club's starting shortstop. Forst added (Twitter links) that if Punto's option does not vest, it turns into a club option. Forst also disclosed that the option vests if Punto spends less than 30 days on the disabled list, but there are other ways that he can get the option to trigger if he exceeds that number.

The 36-year-old Punto offers experience at second base, shortstop, and third base. In 116 games last season, the veteran hit .255/.328/.327 in 116 games for the Dodgers last season. Across 13 big league seasons, Punto owns a .248..325/.325 batting line while offering quality defense in the infield.

Punto is represented by Jeff Caulfield, according to the MLBTR Agency Database.

Bye bye Ricky Nolasco, :smokin

Ok, he's not officially gone but already has a couple of bloated four year deals, one of them from the Twins. Hope they let him walk. Ricky is a solid 4-5, a shaky 3 if you want to call him that. He wont be as good as he was when he first came on board, but he wont be as bad as he was at the tail end of the season. Somewhere in the middle, frustrating to watch at times. Too bad he wants and will probably get Anibal Sanchez money, :smh:.

I hate all this talk of moving Kemp, simply because it'll give us an outfield of Crawford, Puig and Ethier,

Kemp hasn't been able to shake the injury bug, but that is an awful defensive outfield and an even more awful offensive outfield when facing lefties. :smh:

They need to move Ethier, and if they are lucky enough to find a sucker, move Crawford too.

If they moved dre AND craw...whod u want as the LFer full time? Svs? Joc? FA?

To me, nolasco is gone....sucks cuz hes a hometown boy.but he aint gettin anibal money from guggenheim. Tanaka/price would be suffice....LOL.

Man who'd be the sucker that took crawford?

Even though he wasn't entirely responsible for swinging that big trade.

It's easier and cheaper to find a decent corner outfielder. Having an OF that has no true, or half decent CF'er leaves you in a poor spot defensively. We got lucky with Ethier, he was somewhat adequate. Despite his GG in RF, he was already subpar for RF. Full season of Dre in CF, yikes. Plus, we don't need a Skip Schumaker in the NLCS situation again, :smh:

I don't see anybody being dumb enough to take craw or ethier unless the dodgers eat up a huge portion of the contract.
If Kemp doesn't come through this year, it's time to write him off.

I think Kemp comes thru, ya'll trippin'. I say get rid of Ethier (he's the reason we lost to St. Louis because Beltran stole his soul). I'd rather chance it with Kemp than Ethier. To be honest, I just hope we get someone that can rally the troops when times are bad. If Puig gets his **** together and learns the nuances of the MLB then, for the most part, we'll be fine; unless we get Stanton n Fernandez (

). I like the future tho. Management wants to win, n that's all I want too.

Go Dodgers!

$10 million is a lot for a set-up man, but I like the Wilson re-signing. I read something that made a lot of sense for this signing, Dodgers may be paying closer money for a set-up man, but they're currently playing set-up money for a real good closer in Kenley.

Discussions probably included this:

Colletti: "Look Brian, everyone loves you in LA now. The thing is they just love hearing 'California Love' in the 9th a little more... We'll still pay you like you're closing games though!"

Wilson: "Can I grow a mini-mini-beard on my mini-beard?"

Colletti "We'll actually throw in a second year play option for $9 mill if you do."

Glad to see him back. With us non tendering beli, hes all the more important. Withrow slides into belis RH middle relief role, still have dominguez and paco. I like out offseason thus far.

Guerrero, haren, wilson. Maybe papi is next (hopefully as a utility role)....wouldnt be mad if hes opening day 3B. Next......kersh extension. Hanram extension, maybe.....maybe look for a 3B.

These kemp rumors are concerning. If anyone should be dealt..its dre or craw...preferrably craw..nothing personal...I just think kemp and dre offer more at thier salaries.

vindeezy, in regards to Kemp I'm torn. He was a part of the reason I started following the Dodgers hard the past couple of years, especially after that monster should-of-been MVP season. As a Mariner fan first, I'd love him in the outfield up there. It would be weird seeing him on another team though.

In regards to the outfielders, outside of Puig, I'd actually be trying to move Ethier; Crawford looked really good in parts of last season despite his bad contract...

^^I think matt has alot left in the tank....preferrably, id rather have 2 power hitting RH OFers than 1 (puig) and dre and craw........buy well see.....I also think kemp wont sniff 30 bombs playing 81 gms (if healthy) in safeco or fenway.

I trust ned. Semi srs.

Sea is one...taijuan walker/seager+others would prob be a starting point. Im not down.

Dre to boston for middlebrooks or a multiplayer deal invlolving both as principles is prob a possibility.

^^^
Doubt Seattle will give up Taijuan + pieces unless LA eats a lot more of Kemp's contract than reported. I'm thinking it'll be Hultzen/Paxton plus Nick Franklin and/ or Brad Miller.

As a Mariner fan and someone that pulls for the Dodgers , I actually think it would cool to see Taijuan in LA..that rotation would be CRAZY.

Glad to see Wilson back, Belly gone too.

Kemp isnt going anywhere, Seattle signs Cano and trades for Crawford so they have C&C duo.

Im leaning cano to sea as well...theyre way above what anyone else is gonna offer@225M (at the moment). If we trade craw to sea, I bet sea would make LA most of it..lol. havent heard any speculated destinations for craw like I have matt or dre. :/

I have heard laa and lad and a few others are gonna push hard for price. I bet theyd unload 2 A level prospects for price and reload with prospects in a seperate deal for an OF assuming we eat salary.

Someone taking Crawford is a pipe dream, he has zero value even when picking up a chunk of his bloated salary. Ethier has minimal value and Kemp has the most.

Still an outfield of Crawford, Puig and Ethier... :wow:, that would be a nightmare. Not only is it a poor outfield defensively, but you got two guys that can't hit righties. They are both bad enough that you have to seriously consider platooning them.

Not a fan of the Brian Wilson signing, just feel the money could've been allocated elsewhere. Boston got Mujica for two years at the price we got Wilson. Withrow was solid last year, but can he withstand a full season of use by Don Mattingly. JP Howell is still unsigned and he was a vital cog to the bullpen last year.

Bench is still thin, third is still wide open and they have only signed a question mark to fill second base (Guerrero). Guess they are hoping Cuban lightning strikes twice.

Teams are actively making moves, maybe the front office will stop sitting on their hands during the winter meetings.

Mariners are not moving Saeger,

Mariners are not going to take on Crawford, and the return for Kemp will not be that high. If Kemp isn't a Dodger in 2014, they better have a plan, 'cause the OF I mentioned earlier is a scary yet realistic.
