If You Are Looking for/Interested In Working With The Federal Government...Come In. Positions Availa

I thought the contractor jobs were posted on USAjobs :nerd:. I anticipate going the contractor route, there's also a base of sorts in my area, actually just applied for an IT Specialist gig out there last night.

This might be a verbiage/definition mix-up. Only Federal Positions are posted on USAJOBS and it is important to see what the hiring code/who the authorized intended applicants the Requistion is geared towards. A lot of people waste time applying for jobs they never have a chance of getting because it is not for them. The best route is networking and making a personal connection that will guide your resume through the process and/or advocate for you/see it through from application to interview to hiring.

It might seem difficult, but you really need to switch up how to apply. You need to select "Yes" to every skill question no matter what in order to give yourself the necessary score to even make it past the initial cut off (That's usually high 90s).

A Contractor is someone employed by a Private Sector/Industry Company contracted to a Federal Agency/Military Base/Etc. to perform a job based on a Service Contract. Civilian Employee at DLA is a Federal Employee, while the Contractor simply works at DLA but is not employed by DLA...but rather their individual specific company that cuts their check. DLA pays the Company for the Service...Company pays the employee(s). Everyone makes money......ha...ha...ha...usually or in theory.

Welp, I might be out for that position I applied for, I selected "No" for the questions for the GS09-12 classification since I don't have that exp.

is the clearance backlog that bad right now?

ive had more than a few hits with companies saying "Must have the ability to obtain secret" (which i am eligible) but once they find out I don't have a clearance, they've stopped talking...are there an abundance of people with that level?

also, is it true that only a few companies are willing to go through the TS background investigation for non-cleared people? i see many postings that say its needed when applying...i know its not cheap to go pay for the investigation, so i guess its a cost-saving measure...

had a hit from AECOM recently that said "Ability to obtain TS/SCI," but again, said i wasnt previously cleared, and communication ceased...

iono
been waiting since late may early jun for mine.

my commander told me there is like 6 people doing the investigations for the whole United States

Yea, the clearance backlog is ridiculous and they aren't making any real efforts to fix it. If you can't obtain an interim you're pretty much toast. And yea these big contractors operate like agency's so I'd stay federal or wouldn't mind going contractor.

I got a TS currently but some issues came up. Pray for me :smh:

Best wishes....OPM can be ruthless and/or Personnel Security. Pretty much luck of the draw....I had a case going on for two years all the way up to a HSPD-12 Security Hearing with the Director at WHS.

TS Clearance expenses are approximately $80,000 or something of that nature....someone has to sponsor an individual to obtain one of these. An individual can not just get a clearance for the heck of it.

The issue with companies hiring/searching for cleared candidates is that Recruiting Departments are often not skilled or well versed enough to really know what they are even looking for....technically and/or from a qualifications stand point (clearances, experience, certifications, etc.).

Yeah USAJOBS is for federal govt positions only.

To apply to govt contractor companies you need to go to their website. @JesusShuttlesworth34
and I posted a bunch of different companies just Google their sites.

I'm just curious why are so many only focusing on the federal positions and not govt contractor positions as well?

I'm not sure why people have such a negative stigma towards Contractor positions when it comes to job stability or security. The Incumbent more often than not, retains their contract for the Base plus Option Years. Seldom does the Government choose not to exercise the Option Years and if they choose not to....if you are a decent worker, the next Contractor will just badge flip you onboard as you have specialized knowledge of the space/work.

You get paid more...have flexibility to bounce and are a commodity. I would advise those with youth and skills not to go Federal....unless you are lazy, like to blend in and affect nothing.

Its crazy that I came across this thread because I've recently decided to try and jump into the IT world. I work in an auto shop right now and have no idea where to even start. Do most of the people working in these fields have degrees, certifications or both? I looked up some certifications like CompTIA A+, network support, network technician and programming, would those be a good place to start? Thanks in advance

THIS MAN KNOWS. There aren't many agencies that will challenge you if you are young, only the 3 letter agencies/intel community IMO.

The program I am on has been around for 12 years so far and we are projected to have about 15 more years lol I don't plan to be here for that.

A lot of people honestly just want to skate by, so I can understand why you would want to go fed.

Too much truth. I got in sorta young thru the STEP program and landed in a 5/7/9/11/12 at DHS (I think we're apart of the three letter agencies  ) and I'm not the most proactive dude but once I topped out I could feel the rust from those years of pretty much guaranteed promotions. Like you said it's great for a lazy dude but I feel like it's better for the tail end of your career where you've made all your money and wanna chill.

Also, it's amazing how a lot of people don't know how the federal government works. My friends in the private sector are always trying to compare it but just don't understand and I don't have time to explain it to them.

Yeah man, I decided against. For 3 letter I'm thinking CIA, NSA, FBI , DHS is a good contender lol .

Yeah thats always been my backup plan. If my businesses don't work out as expected around age 35 switch over to a 3 letter agency as a GSE-14 and sail my way to retirement lol .

My old lady's coworkers were military dudes with only High School diplomas working as civilian employees at USMC MCNOSC. They were dumb as rocks, but did the bare minimum, networked and were working on Certs/College classes while working as GS-9/11.

I finished my old lady's degree at a University in VA....she had a BS in Information Technology/Information Systems. She took night classes after having a small child and completing two years at community college. Got her an internship at NG after college and then working for NG/USMC at Quantico. She makes approx. $90k or so and when I met her.....she made about $200 every two weeks walking dogs and worked as an Au-Paire.

Get a few Certs first.....A+, Security +, etc. Bust your butt on Certs and companies can't deny your skill. College degree in any field just shows you have commitment to complete a long term goal.

what's your background in?

I feel like you need to make a new thread and tell your WHOLE life story. Like in its entirety. Your IG is crazy, just make a thread here and explain everything lol

I would have no problem doing that...I've shared a huge portion of things throughout the years, I just assumed most people didn't care/didn't believe or knocked it out of spite/envy/jealousy or just NT being NT.

NT loves to build people up, tear them down...repeat, even those that take care of NT and give things away/pay it forward.

Not surprising, but a disappointing depiction of where our youth/society is at.

I'm a software engineer , BS in Computer Science.
Working on making the switch to Cyber Security just passed the Security+ exam.

I'm 24, started working full time at 22 after graduation. Just for reference.

Cyber has a lot of fields, Security Engineering, Scanning/Compliance, Vulnerability Scanning/Testing, Penetration Testing, FISMA/FEDRAMP, IA, etc.

The money will be there, but a lot of Cyber/IT folks get shuffled into Project Management that probably shouldn't as they don't have the interpersonal communication skills nor the desire to lead a team.

Find your lane...the money is there and it's a growing field for sure.

@JesusShuttlesworth34  just post it in here. I definitely would like to hear your story seems like you have been through a lot and can inspire.

Yeah I'm just honestly over coding , once you know it you know it and there really isn't much challenge.

I was thinking of switching to cyber, because it seems like a big boom is coming and it is already an understaffed field.

I know there are people with the sought after clearance and a CISSP cert making close to 200K in the area.

Yeah....we had billable folks at $400/hr and would have contest to see how high we could bill our Commercial Clients like Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, etc.

Cyber is a great field....the future of military warfare will be done on computers for sure.

I've written a few versions of my story....there is a lot to consolidate. I think I do better with questions/answers as it forces me to keep focused and my answers direct. Feel free to ask anything or I can try to find my copies of a rough outline of my life lol.

how hard is this to learn if you apply yourself?

But I'm tryna be an IT PM that's gotta count for something  But that billable is crazy. I really need to consider which lane I wanna go down before I get to my PM destination though. Granted my MBA has an Management Information Systems concentration but if cyber is the business, I'm gon def look into that. Whatever can get me out of Pittsburgh or at least financially good here.

And I got tired of coding myself and I was only learning it for about 2yrs or so, mainly full stack web development. It's coo and serves a purpose and I don't mind doing it, but I can't make a career out of it, too mundane. But I will say it will come in useful for some voids I see needing filled.

1. You used to play college ball yes? Tell me about some of those experiences.

2. Dated a girl who had a child from a previous relationship? You helped raise his child? Tell me about this experience, and do you still keep in touch with him? With her? Why the breakup? Are you over her?

3. Has a close friend of yours ever lost their life early?

4. Current relationship status?

5. Plan going forward? House? Kids? Marriage? World travel?

6. Are your parents a big part of your life? Any other close family?

7. Explain some of your tatts.

8. Profit
