so in the past week or so i got two tickets. my first ever

i got one ticket when i was making a right on a red light. it was 4 am and i was sleepy and i turned right and the camera flashed and took my picture so im not sure there is anything i can do about that one.

i got a speeding ticket for doing 60 in a 40 and i got the letter in the mail today for that one, but i lost the actual ticket the cop gave me.
what are my options?

on the letter i got it gives me an option to check a box for court trial or trial by declaration. whats the difference?
can i go to the courthouse and try to see if the cop will show up? and if he does show up can i still go to traffic school to take it off my record?

and the bail on the ticket says $900 what does that mean?

im in california btw.

thanks for any and all advice

On the lost ticket you will have to go to the court office and request a copy of the ticket....

The $900 bail amount is basically what you have to pay for the ticket...

Court trial or court by declaration is if you want to fight or dispute the ticket which wouldn't apply to you unless you feel the need to fight it.

Good luck OP hope this helps.

And BTW I might be wrong but I thought that effective sometime last year those camera tickets would no longer apply in the LA county. :nerd: My wife came home over a month ago saying the camera flashed while she was in the lane while the light was yellow, she never received nothing in the mail for that.

For the first ticket you coming out of pocket $400-500. Not sure if you can fight your way out of that one. The second ticket I'm not sure on price but you can either go to court and hope the officer does not show up or plead guilty and go to traffic school. The judge will reduce the fine off the ticket if you go and once completed the point will be taken off your record. Regardless you're going to get a point any way for the first ticket. You can either sit in an 8 hour class or take the course online which takes out 30-45 minutes. Good luck!

We don't have red light cameras here so I don't know about that one, but definitely plead not guilty on the other and hope the cop doesn't show. A lot of times they don't and you get no fees or points at all. It's always worth a shot.

but if he does show up what do i do?

i was coming down a big hill and drive a pickup so should i make a scientific explanation that gravity plus this much weight automatically brings my car to higher speeds without much acceleration

yea, except for the fact that in CA you waive your right to traffic school if you decide to plead not guilty and go before a judge to fight the ticket.

dont listen to this person OP.

while it is possible to plead your case before a judge and after being found guilty you can petition the judge to still go to traffic school (and the judge could grant that to you) why bother rolling the dice? If its your first moving violation, just bite the bullet, pay the ticket, pay for traffic school, and then sign up for an online traffic school assuming your county allows it.

DO NOT TAKE THE IN PERSON TRAFFIC SCHOOL.

totally not worth it. You will sit in a classroom for an entire day bored to death. Online traffic school is fast and easy. Assuming you arent a complete poop for brains and have some common sense when it comes to the rules of the road, you should be able to breeze through the test portion of it in an hour or less. Most online traffic schools require that you log in a minimum number of hours (6 or 8 hrs min) but who cares. Youre probably spending that much time on NT anyways. All you gotta do is login to the traffic school site, minimize the window, and then act as if its not even there.

Maybe our traffic judge in my city is more lenient because she still asks if the violator wants traffic school if she finds them guilty. It is at their discretion if you have plead not guilty and stood trial. But pleading not guilty doesn't waive your rights.

Unfortunately a scientific explanation wouldn't really work because they are going to say that you knew the weight of your truck was a factor and you should have prepared for that.

"To contest a traffic ticket, one is effectively pleading not guilty, according to Coordinated Court Services, which coordinates traffic school and its test results, among other tasks, for Riverside County courts. Requesting to go to traffic school is essentially pleading guilty, so people dealing with traffic citations can’t do both."

not trying to argue semantics here. like i said before, a judge may still grant you the opportunity to go to traffic school to get the points off your record even after they find you guilty, by no means are they obligated to. maybe the judge is having a bad day and has an F-everybody attitude. Why chance it? If you just plead guilty and go to traffic school, as long as you meet the requirements for it, its 100% guaranteed that you will have not get that point on your record.
