The Sopranos...ending

the POV analysis makes perfect sense

you keep getting a repeated sequence of views, one of them being from Tony's POV. At the end once it gets to the view from Tony again all you see is black, that's his POV

remember that one dude earlier in the series saying something like "I bet once you die, it's just all black and quiet" or something along those lines

I don't think it's fair that so many take a negative view of the entire series because of the final scene. We're really going to forget EVERYTHING? All past episodes and plots are now tainted? Nah, that's just people being disappointed they didn't get what they wanted from the show in the end. The Sopranos is still one of the best shows of all-time, many would say 2nd behind The Wire and that's still completely justified despite the ending.
Wow, get out of my head. That's EXACTLY how I feel about people who place too much value on the final scenes of a movie or TV show. I don't wanna minimize the importance of the conclusion to a story (or storyline) but it's crazy how a few seconds or minutes can completely change people's perspective on something they dedicated HOURS to. The frequent overreactions we see to finales is unwarranted.
If people really think about it, they shouldn't be shocked at this kind of ambiguous ending. This show featured dream sequences and symbolism VERY heavily and we were rarely given what we expected. Alan Sepinwall wrote about it
"Every cooperating witness would die before they could provide anything of value to the FBI... Before Richie Aprile can go to war with Tony, Janice murders him over a punch in the face. Melfi never tells Tony about her rapist. Furio runs back to Italy. And still people expected a familiar narrative."
and he's exactly right. So to expect a resolute ending wasn't fair from the show.

I think it was a bold move and one that you probably won't see again because of the divisive reaction.. and for that reason, I loved it.
GREAT point.

At first, I didn't know what to make of it because I wasn't sure about what happened. But I figured the end was elaborate and multilayered and the info I looked up agreed with that so I did respect the director's vision. People expect to be spoon fed, Sopranos never did it throughout the whole show. No one should have expected them to start doing that in its final few minutes.
I started watching Lost... I'm almost up to season 4 and I already think it's one of the GOAT series... hopefully the finale doesn't let me down.

Man i banged that series out in 2 weeks  . I was watching like 10 episodes a day.

:smh: shame. The ending wasnt what i expected but the series was great so i wasnt eem mad.

What the hell man? I dedicate a month of my life to finally watching this show and I get to the series finale an they give me that ****. Sooo is he dead? If so for what reason? Phil was wacked an the goons was called off. Or did Meadow just walk in. What the hell is the point of an ending like that? An why the hell would they start the storyline about him being indicted.

I'm all for endings that force you to interpret ****. But this was a damn epic show. It needed a clear cut ending. The fans need closure. Argh
nothing about that show was clear cut except the death scenes

.  if you didn't get closure from the ending, you need to watch the entire series again and i don't say that lightly - i did.  after the first couple full viewings you really start to get that you dont know what's going on at all in the show except when you can say 'tony's mad' or 'phil's a ****' or 'carmella's feeling sad' or 'aj's obviously gay'.  that was the entire crux of the show.  if you wanted tony to die, then he could have.  if you wanted him to keep pimpin with his hot *** daughter and wife, maybe he did.  the only way the show could have ended.

great ending it wasn't about him dying or living. it's about how tony was gonna have to live the rest of his life in constant fear, always looking over his shoulder and if and when a hit comes it won't be dramatic.everything will just go blank.

They prolly wanted to leave the ending ambiguous because they planned to make a Sopranos movie, or even a continuation of the show after a few years. By making the ending the way it was the eventual movie could go in any direction without anyone questioning anything. Tony could be alive or dead who knows what couldve happened in that diner. Up to the viewer to decide

something about a bell ringing signifying the change from one perspective to another
ain't reading all that though

It's got pictures, and videos and everything, just read thru those, you'll get enough of what you need.

It will show you that every single episode you watched that final season led up to that moment and gave you the clarity of what happened. That person (who has to be related to the writer or something  ) puts it together perfectly for you. It'll completely change your views on the last season entirely.

It wasn't because of a potential movie, David Chase just wanted it that way and he did it.

Finished the series a few months ago. I hated the ending at first but over time I came to appreciate it as I read different interpretations on it.

I'll always remember the ending and thinking the television went out  . Was about to call up Cablevision right then and there.

yup , he didnt even want credits.

like i said ...it didnt matter if he died or if he lived , thats how every moment of his life was gonna be...everytime somebody

goes to the bathroom or gets up he's gonna have to look over his shoulder....always in constant fear for his family and himself

all his actions had finally caught up to him. and the screen suddenly going blank was just tony's point of view , meaning if/when

the moment come that they'll put the hit on him it would happen suddenly without him noticing...

Ending was terrible. The writers should be ashamed of themselves

according to this the members only jacket guy killed him...but if your watch the ending when that dude is sitting down

he's tapping on the counter with his finger prints , touching coffee mugs , sitting infront of a waitess that can identify him

and in a public place....what kind of hitman is that sloppy

I remember feeling the same way OP. But starting at season 4 the consistency in the story telling fell off due to the writers' strike, so it made more sense. But I was still pissed for weeks after that. Take all these blog interpretations for what they're worth--the show deserved a PROPER ending. Still think it was a b.s. way out of ending the series.

Look at how Seinfeld ended for another example of non-deliverance. :smh:
