In photos: Appalling New York rooms for rent
The Worst Room, a homeless man's new blog on Tumblr, highlights some of the most dismal craigslist postings in New York's notoriously dismal housing market. Yahoo! Homes has selected some of the worst of them here, and has paired them up with quotes from and links to the craigslist postings (as well as to the captions on The Worst Room). None of the quotes have been edited for spelling, grammar, etc.

The caption from The Worst Room: "Williamsburg, Brooklyn. $1200.00
(with reliable electricity)"

From the posting on craigslist: "Are you looking for a nurturing creative environment to come home to everyday and instantly be connected into a booming artist community ?"

And there are fools out there willing to drop $ on places like this....you can rent a 2-3 bedroom apartment in other parts of the city (if you look around) for a similar price. Look at how crappy the conditions are as well...jeez

Is this a realistic representation of renting rooms/apts in NYC, or are they just listing the most absurd and obnoxious options available? Also, how does a homeless man have a blog? Seriously, $1200 can't get you a studio in NYC? Only a jail cell?

looks like a rent controlled apartment.
And it most likely is. The people who are moving to NYC from the Midwest and god knows where else aren't living in apartments that have rooms like this. Landlords are trying to move people out of their buildings whether it be a buyout or not doing renovations to apartments like those pictured so that they can fully remodel them and then justify a hike in the rent.

Very misleading title and is sure to steer the course of this thread.

Who wants to pay $1200/month to live in Brownsville, East New York, East Flatbush or Bushwick? Not this guy.

Not really. Most New Yorkers use their apartments for SLEEPING and actual shelter. 80% of the day we're OUT LIVING LIFE in one of the most visited cities in the world.

Hope people enjoy their 6 bedroom castle in the middle of nowhere USA, I'm sure the economy is just BOOMING.

Because people w/ 6 bedroom houses stay put? They may not be in a city, but they're probably enjoying life just as much as the next person.

For as many people who don't want to live in those areas at that price, there are just as many who would be willing to do so.

And those are people who aren't from New York City and are clueless about those neighborhoods. Shouldn't have to move deeper into the worst neighborhoods to live comfortable.

i guess i somewhat feel for him but is NYC JUST Manhattan and Brooklyn? im not from NYC and dont really know the rental markets but even I'm aware of the areas he's listed (Manhattan and Western BK) are going to be very high.

none of his blog entries are about Queens, Bronx (never been, but it can't be ALL bad, right?) or even Jersey.

i feel he just wants to live near the "artist collective" areas of NYC considering his profession (freelance cinematographer). hopefully he realizes the situation and expands his areas.

You don't have to move to the worst neighborhoods to do this though. Off hand, I know that you can find affordable spots in good areas around Queens for under 2gs. My sister has a 2 bedroom for under that pricetag in Briarwood.

Its a hipster complaining bout living in a crowded

Hipster haven instead of living in other vastly superior sections in NYC sq ft. wise like da BX.

Grand concourse apts are known to be cheap

And cavernous.

So what the nice looking places looking like?

I don't mean millionaire status type stuff either, where do regular middle class people live and what does that look like?

Be the people spending 6gs on a trip to NY amazed by 50ft M&M's and naked cowboys, clogging up the sidewalk when I just wanna get to my destination.

People always say "I been to other cities" ...you know automatically they've NEVER stepped foot in New York CITY.

There's no place like it on earth ...even our friendly Cali peeps get caught out here DAILY strolling the streets of Soho.

People who buy those sardine cans aren't real-estate literate for one ...for two they're probably shady or have bad credit. You get what you deserve in New York that's the way it is. If you're boppin' around here with jacked credit and no references and trying to cop something without a broker what you expect to get?

I live Brooklyn on the Queens border ...East Williamsburg. My apartment doesn't look like Ninja's either. I have SPACE.

24hours a day x 80% = 20 hours outside of your apt? So basically you live in your apt only 4 hours a day? Paying 1,200 a month to only use your apt 4 hours a day? Wow!

What kind of life is that? Don't get me wrong, I have been to NYC plenty and the city is quite amazing 24 hours a day, but I only stayed uptown in hotels so I have no clue about the housing there. Is what you're saying true regarding you guys don't spend that much time in your own homes?

Let me rephrase that, Mon-Fri most NY'ers are on the GO. On a given day they're out the door by 7:30am and not home until maybe 6:00-8:00pm.
If they're under 40, most likely they're hitting the town after going home and showering and wont return until 11-1am...

How much time do you need to spend at home in Nowhere USA? If you're 18-35 you're in grind mode ...not Home Depot buying deck paint and flower pots.

6-8 hours of sleep Mon-Fri and keep it moving. Go GET that money...or education.
