Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Shuts Down Luke Cage Speculation

Yesterday's debut of the first full trailer for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." immediately led to fan speculation that the mysterious hooded and super-powered character played by J. August Ricards might be Marvel's Luke Cage. In a new interview with Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell, however, IGN has learned that the character in question is someone else altogether, although his identity remains a secret.

"It’s not the [character] people are talking about," Bell said when asked about the potential of Richards playing Cage. "...Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, 'Look, all our parts are open to all diversity.' So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it's J was just because he was the best actor. It wasn’t like, 'You know who…!'”

So the speculation continues with the hint that the character's ethnicity may not correspond to his comic book counterpart, whoever that might ultimately be.

Loki shanked him with the scepter.
I vaguly remember this.
Was Loki in on it too?

Now that I've seen the gif, I really don't remember seeing this.

I thought I did, but my memory was way off.

Damn. How long were you asleep? That explanation they have of him being alive is really stupid. Loki stabbed that guy straight through the chest.

I remember falling asleep at like 50 min into the movie.

That scene is right after he tells Thor that he wanted them to come together right?

Like I said before, I can't remember the scene but I remember his cards being stained with blood.

That scene is when Loki escaped and tricked Thor to getting inside Hulks chamber that drops from the ship. Coulson tried to stop Loki from pressing the button and then Loki teleported behind Coulson and stabbed him.

this show will do lost numbers(the 1st season) and fan boys, DC stans, and people who don't like anything that's not nolan related will hate it

Just watch this:
OH, nevermind I was awake for this.

I remember him saying "even I don't know what it does."

I guess I totally forgot that this dude "dies."

Thanks for posting the scene.

Marvel and its cinematic universe already has a huge fanbase.
Show should do fine, considering.
And whoever said it aint touching Arrow, it doesnt matter.
People will be watching.

I would put some small time, unknown heroes/villains in this show to keep people interested. Somewhat like Arrow, I do think it is the cameos that keeps some people viewing week after week.

The problem might be the character licensing, I am not sure how Sony owning Spiderman world and Fox owning the XMen world affects who they can put on the show but characters like Moonknight, Prowler, Taskmaster, etc... are some that I'd like to see, not exactly obscure but still relatively unknown to the public.

See thats the tricky thing... Those companies own the movie rights, this is tv but this is apart of the cinematic universe. I tweeted this exact thing to AgentM (editor at marvel) and he was being dodge as hell about answering this.

'MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.' Premieres Sept. 24

The first Marvel Cinematic Universe television program will premiere on ABC at 8PM EST (7 PM PST) on Tuesday, September 24th. Titled "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." actor Clark Gregg will return as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top Level 7 agent Phil Coulson. He'll put together a new covert team aiming to counteract global threats presented by a world now exposed to super powered individuals and intergalactic warfare in the wake of the lie-altering events of "The Avengers." Rounding out the cast are black-ops expert Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), S.H.I.E.L.D. legend Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), science duo Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) - affectionately known as Fitz-Simmons and civilian computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

The pilot to The Avengers follow-up, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D has been kept under tight wraps, but now it's been revealed that Cobie Smulders will appear in the pilot and beyond. See Maria Hill's new look and comments from Whedon!

"I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she IS SHIELD!"

"She’s cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark’s. Also, if she’s in it I get to hang out with Cobie."

:smoking :smokin

Read she pops up sporadically in S1 cause of How I Met Your Mother, will join SHIELD for S2 if it's still around.

I'm assuming the show is gonna be a pretty formulaic case-a-week type. Like one week it's a monster caught on tape, let's find it! Next it's billionaire xxx is doing something shady, turns out he has superpowers!

I can see that for most of the season until they bust out the season long arcs like Buffy did.

Saw this on another forum but could this show be the only way we see Spider-Man with Marvel?

Apparently, back in 2009, Sony gave Spider-Mans TV rights back to Marvel/Disney.

Sony Relinquishes TV Rights To Spider-Man

I think the panic from Disney buying Marvel has started to settle down. People are starting to see that it's not the end of the world. Disney is interested in making money and there's no way they'd simply turn all the Marvel properties into garbage. I see this as more security in Marvel's products. They now have the financing they need to create even more entertainment for us.

In an interesting move, Sony has decided to relinquish the TV rights to Spider-Man. While Sony has been doing a nice job with the movies and Spectacular Spider-Man TV show, you have to admit things could've been handled better. Despite the success of the animated show, Sony has been very reluctant about renewing the series. The second season (currently airing on the Disney XD channel) had already aired in other countries and those working on the show had no idea if there would be a third season. The fact that it is airing on a Disney channel in the U.S. could be a good sign that we will see more new episodes.

Other good news (as reported by Collider) is this will open the door to more guest stars without all the legal entanglements. Also, how about a Spider-Man live-action TV show? With LOST nearing its end, perhaps ABC will be looking for a new show to put on?

So this is a big deal as it might just be the only way we can see Spidey (or even just Peter Parker if they want to milk it?) in Disneys Marvel-universe. I mean Disney already teams Spidey up with SHIELD in the current cartoon so what is stopping them from using him in this TV show? I really hope Whedon has him in mind for this season. It will definitely be a big hit if they are able to pull it off.

I dont know what the budget is for the show, but with the sfx costs for spiderman and whatnot, if the show bombs, which it looks like it may, it probably isnt worth it

It doesn't really need to be as good as the movie and Spidey could just be a little cameo to bring people to the show. Plus technology has gotten better these days, I mean if they can pull it off with Smallville 10 years ago and Arrow these days (haven't really seen that show so not sure what kind of stunts they have).

I think the first season will be a success for this show though, it is still riding off of the Avengers hype and Whedons name. Plus i've heard good things about the pilot shown at Comic-Con. Showing or hinting a Spidey possibility even at the finale and a tease for season 2 will give them a rating boost.

Funny that you mention Arrow and Smallville because this show looks and feels as if it should be on the CW. The expectations are much lower there ratings wise.

I do not really watch national network TV but what's it's competition on Tuesday nights?

CW is happy with a few million viewers. Their ratings expectations are probably a third or fourth of what the major networks want, maybe even less.

Saw the pilot at Comic Con! A lady in the audience asked, "Joss, mind if you show us a clip" to which he answered that due to legal rights he can't and proceeded to say "But we'll show the whole episode" LOL

The first episode centers around a man fighting for his job and attempting to get one by any means necessary while SHIELD attempts to discover the strange events circulating around him. I loved all the references to other Marvel characters too! Episode 2 is definitely going to be awesome. Plus, Chloe Bennet is probably my new celebrity crush

That's exactly what I was saying.

Reality TV. Lots of it. And I think 10 mil for the premiere is asking too much.
