So I went to the dermatologist because I was concerned about my hair thinning and I wanted to do something about it to either slow or prevent the process of balding. The Dr. recommended using the Rogaine foam to solve this issue, but as a black male I've always seen Caucasian men in the commercials and have wondered is this truly a product that will work on hair of other ethnic backgrounds?? What methods have you used to prevent or slow the process?

- My head is perfectly shaped to rock the bald look, but having issues with razor bumps when shaving :wow:

NOOOOOOO!!!!!

As an older gentleman of 25, I'd also like to know. I've always planned on going full Jordan when I started losing my hair because that horseshoe head look is beyond stupid to me.

I think it works but you have to use it consistently or your hair will just start thinning again as soon as you stop using it.

pshhhh.....

someone needs to photoshop a Black George Costanza.
But nah i think it's in every black man's DNA to shave you're head once you go bald.

Son right now as I type I have 2 bald spots on the top of my head. I went from getting a haircut once every 3 weeks to every week. :smh:

srs question, is it true that rogaine will work on facial hair? dudes around my way are saying so, but I dont think so.

Man the edges thinning but they look fine as long as I keep it low. But damn I developed these damn Shane Battier ripples in my head, the bald look won't do.

My barber suggested a vitamin called Hair, Skin & Nails. Apparently it helps the hair grown in thicker.

If all else fails you can always go this route:

i know nothing about rogaine, BUT my uncle was taking finasteride? for prostate cancer and one of the side effects was CRAZY HAIR GROWTH. he's got a full head of hair now.

following this thread closely. my hairline is starting to go the way of lebron and that's that **** i dont like

I know someone who takes finasteride.  It contains the same ingredients as one of those hair regrowth creams.  Youre supposed to take half a pill a day.  it's also cheaper than the marketed hair growth stuff.

I believe finasteride lowers your DHT levels...the hormone that make you a man = low sex drive/erection problems.

Rogaine works only if keeps using it and the side effects are not worth it.

In my opinion OP cut your hair really low or just cut it all off and rock a beard to compensate.

There's a whole regiment you're suppose to follow. I can't remember the specific products and if I find the link I'll post it up here
1. Nizoral Shampoo. This is just as important as rogaine
2. Finasteride
3. Rogaine
4. Testosterone booster .. I remember this being expensive and why I opted not to try this treatment

I think it was on BB.com where I saw/read the whole run down of products but can't seem to find the actual link in my bookmarks of the website that explains everything. All I remember is that the testosterone booster was quite expensive and you needed it too balance off the side effects of rogaine and finasteride

EDIT
here's the website http://www.hairlosstalk.com/hair-loss-men/

Rogaine is marketed as only supposed to work on the vertex of your head (the top, back part) so if your hairline is in a great recession from the front, you may be out of luck, but never hurts to try. As for the medicine, I'm not sure how bad the testosterone side effects are from it, but I read a law firm's report that even Rogaine can cause sex drive issues. If you're going to be risking it either way, might as well go for the one that works better. From what I've gathered, if you don't do a restorative surgery, then you're just kinda poking around and hoping to strike oil. However, I have heard of a non-surgical hair restoration procedure offered by a non-surgical facial age-restoration doctor that I'm going to look into.

I've tried Rogaine and the generic stuff from Target. I think Target's product has given me marginally better results and costs about 20% less. I have had some regrowth on areas outside the vertex, too. I can say it has, at least, certainly slowed my hair-loss down tremendously. I was losing it quickly at one point and probably could have saved years on my appearance if I had begun using this stuff sooner. Also, I have had no sex drive diminishment to report of and I've been using this stuff for a couple years, now.

My recommendation: If you think you might need it now or soon, go ahead and start so you can prevent it from getting worse.

This is the realest/important thread I've ever read on NT. Will watch closely for replies and solutions

I have alopecia areata and used Rogaine for a few months. Didnt really work that well though. Ended up getting a few cortisone shots i the scalp that did the trick. There are topical creams that help as well with bald spots and thinning hair.

THIS!! I'm worried about that sex drive. That's why I'm going to try the Rogaine first and if it gets any worse then I'll take other measures.

Bruhs, thanks for the advice!!! 8)

^ More info on these shots you speak of?
I went to a dermatologist after the Rogaine not working and told him about the skin condition i had. He grabbed some cortisone and shot it straight into my scalp. Super thin needle and you get multiple shots in the affected area (i got about 20 little shots in my bald spot). It isn't horrible, but it does sting a bit. Had a headache after the steroid shots but nothing after that. 4 weeks later, hair started to grow back. I was getting married a few months away so i went back and got another round of cortisone. All in all it took about 3 months to have my hair fully grow back in.

haha keep in mind i have an auto immune disorder that caused my hair loss. I was given the option to take the shots so i did and it worked. Not sure if they let you do that just because of natural thinning and hair loss.
