Playing with some black and white stuff today.

I wish the sky was more interesting in the first one - taken at about 4pm so the light was pretty flat.

The second one was a long exposure at about 11pm at night. It's of Crail Golf course - the third oldest course in the world I think.

^^ kdwallace I like the first one with no clouds. from a technical standpoint how I was taught if you define the space against the white edge you've done your job. The lack of clouds creates a perfect negative space within your composition.

But thats interesting technique for b/w converstion. looks quite success aswell, very rich warm images.

Thanks, on looking at it again the first one could maybe do with a little sharpening.

I like that method for conversion - as you say it gives different results with almost a warmth to them. I'm reading a book about Ansel Adams at the moment so I've been fiddling with stuff like that to try and imitate some of the effects he got.

I just think with a moody sky it could look better - I'm back to the same place in a few weeks so I'll see what the weather is like. I'm thinking big black clouds in the upper left corner.

To get the light better it would be better shooting in the morning but I'm not that committed.

I did the second one with just a straight desaturation to compare them and IMO it's not nearly as good - it just didn't have the tonal range - more greys than black and white.

Thanks for the input.

I used to see dude from the Pack skate in my area all the time when he was just some random skater. Him and the other guy from the Pack are actually alot better then I imagined.......but it's funny cause there always mad fitted when most of the kids/people are wearing beaters and rags.......

Will you guys refer me to a good camera for a good price? My 4 MP Canon S400 doesn't really the memory card anymore, I don't know how to fix that, and the camera is like 4.5 years old. I'm looking for a good portable one with really clear pictures, thanks!

Friendly bump because it took me 12 pages to find this thread again...

One thing I did since I knew nothing about cameras and was looking for a new one was I looked through cnet's editor's picks to get a good starting point ( reviews.cnet.com/4323-653...ml?tag=dir )... I don't have enough experience by any means to really give a solid recommendation, though.

how much should a Nikon d40 go for as a reasonable price?
i saw one at Target going for $600. and i want insurance on it, so how much would that be altogether
am i the ONLY one without a sig?

A little OD on the vignetting on the second pic

The absolute best thread on NT right now.

I just picked up a Canon A640....it's decent for a noob such as myself. I had no idea what all the features did, but scanning through the 40 odd pages cleared up alot of the confusion. Thanks, Add me in the team please. I'm overseas until later this month so I've been taking some amazing pics of downtown Doha, but unfortunately I can't post them until I leave the country (military is strict on uploading pics after the whole Army prison fiasco). Thanks in advance for the ideas.

Couple questions:

1. How do I save images in raw format?
Illuztrious wins again.

Just did some research on your camera and it says you can't shoot in RAW with it Illuztrious

^By one token you are losing information, but honestly unless you know what to look for or are just doing minor edits with lots of saves like its going out of style or plan to keep images for signifcant amounts of time the deterioration probably won't be as signifcant as you might think...

^^^ ohh i see, but im just looking for something i can play with.
i use a digital Nikon, i like it though but i wanna get something better.
whats the difference between the SLR and a DSLR?
am i the ONLY one without a sig?

^An SLR shoots film. Usually people mean 35mm film when they say SLR, but even some medium format cameras like my hassy use SLR type design. DSLR is digital. SLR is single lense reflex, basically its just the construction/setup of the guts and how it all works...

DSLR has the same basic construction and design as an SLR it's just instead of film there is sensor, but it still has most of the mechanical parts that film SLR has. i.e. focal plane shutter..
