Official Photography Thread: Vol. ICan'tFindTheLastOne

Too boring isn't it, the original does give me a headache, but I am committed to get a great photo out of those stairs really soon.

Subway Hall to Path Train to NYC thats a great photo, once you get a great photo out something you should expand on that idea and build it in to something. Snap shots are great but series or bodies of work are even better.

And todays new ones, I'm not sold on. the last ones had some heat today I'm like eh.. the signage one, its a @#%$ ridiculous sign, and I've never seen anything like that in my life, but still, its got very little going on as far as depth of feild and its oldly composed and the manikins i would say basically the same..

ebayologist.... info?
irpstakidberlskee berlskee , but there is alot going on yours where as his kind of plays into it with more subtle details. Like I think if you composed the shot outside the two lamps and the frames it would be composed well but I think I would feel like there is too much going on. If I had to choose asymmetry vs symmetry it would be asymmetry in a heart beat and I think this photo exhibits why, I suppose if its about that overt symmetry then just zoom out or back up, but I think you it lessens it as portraiture when if you get all that stuff in not cropped off...

hey guys,

I have an older external lens that im using for my NIKON D40X...but when i use it, my pictures become OVER exposed to the point where the object is white..

What can I do ti change this? and what Mode should i be shootin on when using ext. flash?

ebayologist, yeah... when I was taking the photo,
I would've moved back more,
but people would've been in it and ruined it.

And after I took the picture, I named it assymetrical
There's a thousand you's, there's only one of me

^ you realize it's symmetrical though right? going for irony?

My #1 guess would be it doesnt fit and your getting a light leak. post a photograph from it (I can probably tell from that if its light leak) and if you give me the name of the lens I can probably figure it out if its the same mount... Guess #2 would be that a D40x has motor driven lens and that old lens doesnt have the motor drive so the camera might think the lens is closing down but probably still left open... so you have to manually control the aperture.

It kind of depends on what kind of flash you have, but just solid easy way would just have both the camera and flash set to TTL.

unfortunately iso 1600 left me with a ton of grain, any tips on fixing that a bit?

thats what 1600 iso is... it's grainy... I suppose you chould sharpen it in Photoshop but then your working with infomation thats not actually there, which is kinda, ehh.. I would use strobes or more likely for your application a flash, or tripod and a bit longer exposure..

that pretzel pic is awesome!
this thread is amazing..some of you guys are amazing photographers..
I tried an HDR today..this is like miy 4th attempt or so..pretty pleased with it but would appreciate some feedback

ey tommy, i really like that picture, but you can't really tell that it's an HDR. maybe it's the crappy school computer that i'm on, but...

like i said though, i like the picture a lot.

and nacho, no offense, but i loved that picture until i scrolled down more. the lights and the bridge itself are wonderful, but i think the dude in it kind of ruined the picture.
i'm not really a fan of the wall in it either, maybe try stepping forward a little bit so that you just get the bridge. i think that'd make for a prettier picture.

great stuff guys, let's keep this thing strong.

Clearly I'm bais because most of my work is potraiture of degrees but nonetheless think you might be able to argue thats it a stronger composition if the guy was cropped out and exposed for the bridge and was architectual photography. But think you gain "soul" if you will, with the guy, in the New York shirt, like repping the Heights with G.W. Bridge in the background, it gives the image contextual depth rather than simply being architectural photography. The idea might not be super orginal but I think nonetheless is an incredibly valid and very representative.Nacho if you like that sort of rep the hood type street photography you should look at a comtemporary like Boogie series called "It's All Good" and there are number of others that I think vary in sort of commercialization (which I'm not really feeling) of that idea like Estevan Oriol who i think is kinda ehh... bit of sell out/overtly commercial about his art...

As a simple photograph or composition I might agree with you spaceman23 but as art I whole heartedly disagree...

s to distract from the bridge, I'm going move the tripod more to the right of that balcony and have the bridge more lower & centered.

I really like Boggie's It's All Good series, that's me all day, Estevan is eeeh.

question for ebayologist or anyone else:

i recently acquired a nikon d40, what shutter speed/aperture do u recommend for close shots of objects like my phone or daily pickups. what do u recommend for landscape-esque shots with a big depth of field ?

also, i'm looking into fish eye lens for my nikon, what do u recommend ? my price range is around $50-100.

^ you can't just leave it on one setting - it depends what you are shooting and what the lighting conditions are where you're shooting.

Generally if you're doing portrait stuff - either people or shoes or whatever - you want a larger aperture so it gives you a shallower depth of field - so making the background less distracting.

For landscape stuff you want a smaller aperture (larger f-number) so that the whole thing is in focus.

The inbuilt meter on the D40 gives reasonable results - so even if you are shooting in full manual then it shows you on the scale on the lcd what you need to adjust - so if you make the aperture bigger it will be showing you to make the shutter faster to compensate for that. You usually want to keep the mark near the centre of the scale.

It takes practice though - and sometimes you want to do something different - and the camera doesn't know that - it just takes a reading and gives a recommendation from the inbuilt software.

I would recommend using the highlights function in the review of images - you just have to use the up and down arrows to turn that on when you are looking at an image. What that does is shows you what is overexposed - the light bits will flash. If you take a picture and there are lots of areas of overexposure or important areas then you can either dial in some exposure compensation or reduce the shutter time a little - again it takes practice to know just how much to change them by.

You can also shoot in aperture priority mode - you tell the camera the aperture you want to use and it picks the appropriate shutter speed - again it won't always be perfect but you can make find adjustments with the exposure compensation once you've taken one picture.

Just practice though - you'll get the hang of it. I'd also recommend that book I've mentioned a few times - The Digital Photography Book
