^very nice pics..

ive been taken pics for about 2 months now with my D40X...
i am comfortable with it and everything but one thing i dont understand fully is APERATURE..

can someone please school me on AP? like how should do i change my aperature if i want the background of the focused object blury and how should i set it with normal trip pictures (taking pics of random things in a city, portrait, etc)

thanks!

the aperture or f stop refers to how open or closed down the lens is. The more closed down the lens i.e. high f-stops like f16, f22, etc. the greater the depth of the focus i.e. more stuff will be in focus and less blurred objects will be. The less closed down the lens i.e. low f-stops like f4, f2.8, etc. the shallower the depth of focus i.e. more stuff will be blured and really only what you focus on in the frame will be in focus. You can rack the focus and should be able to get anything in the focal range which is usually probably alittle under a foot to infininty with most dslr kit lens but the aperture determines the depth of that focus.

A good example of this idea is a pin hole camera usually which have actually no lens but the aperture is so small (a pin hole) (you need really long exposure like multiple mins but still) that depth of focus is usually quite big i.e. most of the image in is in relatively sharp focus even without a lens...

ohh..

in my settings mode i can use my scroll and as i scroll theres a black circle and it would close but would open up as i scroll the other way...

so aperature= how open the lens are...i should leave it as closed as possible if i want to take a pic of say a view but wide open if i want to focus on one object?

should i keep it semi-open and close (medium/half way) usually for quick shots?

Took this one through the window of the train as we were moving, so it's not that great. Pretty disappointing as it is a great subject/view. No way to get anything better.

Someone brought it to my attention that TSS was mentioned so I'll reply and keep it short.

purpleface - I liked the photo. That's why I used it. My bad for not consulting you first. Let me know if you want to be recognized and it's not an issue.

ebayologist - I'm not going to take time writing in regards to all that you typed. While I appreciate your concern and the info you shared, for the record, I'll say that some of it is correct & some of it isn't. Really, I think if anyone chose to sue TSS...well, they wouldn't get much off all the ad "money" (if you want to call it that

Went away last weekend with my new Nikon lens - I left my auto one at home intentionally so I'd have to get used to the new one.

Can do some pretty cool things but with the aperture at f/1.8 the depth of focus is ridiculously shallow.

This is on the main street of where I was staying. About 7pm so it was pretty dark. If I remember right the exposure was about 12s - just long enough for a car to drive by and disappear. You can see my wife getting irritated waiting and my son jumping around behind the lamppost.

This was about 30 mins later so it was actually really dark now - the hyperfocal markings really helped here - I wouldn't have been able to focus just with my eyes. This is in the old graveyard - this is where they used to store the bodies so they would rot before putting them in the graves - to stop graverobbers - a pretty lucrative business around these parts for quite a few years.

It's a little noisy as I only used about a 1 minute exposure and it should have been closer to 2 or 3 mins - I pushed the exposure in my raw editor but it adds a little noise.

This is a lighthouse a few miles away. We'd been there for a few hours - took a picnic and my boys were playing on the beach. I took a few pictures but they were all terrible - just a big white sky and no detail. Just as we were leaving I turned round and the sky suddenly changed - a lot more interesting. Still not a great picture but I just wanted to show what can happen when you wait a little while for a more interesting picture.

Don't take your wife kids with you if you're wanting to shoot landscapes though - too much hanging around.

This is my older boy playing on the beach - a more reasonable aperture here - about f/3.5 I think but still gives a good portrait effect. It's also been modified using my new PS plugin - Virtual Photographer from optikvervelabs.com - makes your shots look a little more like film or slides and I think it gives it a nice finish.

I was thinkin your tonal range was ridiculously good for digital especially on the first one of that set..

^^Nice lol
Wasnt tryin to upstage anyone!! It was just reflecting the sun light so nice I had to take a pic!!

ps..that wall (and every other pic I put up) was taken at BC at the connectin part btwn Roosevelt and the WEB building...under the scaffold for the construction is where I took the brick wall and pole, and the vent and pipe are at the steps leadin to the parking garage!!
