haha yeah, still workin on that.. gonna try using the dioptric (sp?) adjustment more often too

^ you shouldn't have to change the adjustment after you've set it. It's only there to compensate for your eye not being in perfect focus. Forreally sharp pictures you need a tripod - I hardly take a picture without mine now - unless it's outside in bright light.

Do all of you DSLR shooters use RAW? I've only started to shoot and it's a good thing that I started because I've missed a lot using JPEG.

^ Yeah, RAW is the way to go. The only downside is that you have to open each picture on your computer and then save them and that the files are somuch bigger.

hello all...thinking about getting my first slr camera this Christmas...

my question is: Nikon D40 VS Canon EOS 400D

?????????

NayokoChan,

i really like that coke bottle pic. it looks just barely out of focus, but it's my desktop background right now. hope you don't mind

micmorales Well I don't own a digital camera, but as a result of this post mostly I seem to read alot about them. And I have reasonablygood understanding cameras and specs in general as I'm sure the rest of this post can a test to...

It's pretty much the Nikon d40 = Canon 350d and Nikon d40x = Canon 400d. Just plain and simple.
There are differences. But their such comparible cameras it's ridiculous, they compete for the same spot (entry level dslr) so it makes sense but Idon't think alot of people realize it.

I would play with either and go off which feels better. Because the ability to which one you can rack the focus faster or compose faster with matters and thatsgeneral related to easy of use particular to you. I mean I've seen reviews that go so in depth some of the stuff goes over my head and usually they'llpick one over the other but I've read reviews where they pick one and then a week later read a different review and they pick the other. So I don'tthink one so defintively better than the other that it matters what the reviews say get which one you like better after toying with it at a camera store. Thatand you're going to be stuck buying lens/flashes, etc from the company who's camera you end up buying...

Jsmilez I'll say this about your photos and otherwise they're alright.. you're cutting off the tops of heads, give the top theirhead space, not to much a bust portrait but enough use it to create tension with the frame as a oppose to making me wish the frame was like a half inchhigher...

NayokoChan would have to agree with raburns, nice... Throw some like script text on that (not saying you need to) and you got yourself a veryvintageesque coke ad..

raburns04, I see what you mean about it being a bit out of focus. I didn't notice it before but I'm still happywith it. I'm glad you like my picture enough to use it as your wallpaper.

ebayologist, I never thought of it as having potential to be a vintage Coke ad, but I'll definitely have to trythat out. Thanks for the compliments.

Yeah, I like this one.

I'm a bit picky about certain things (we all have our little problems) and with this one the one thing that jumped out at me is that the bottle wasn'tquite in the centre of the image. I cropped it a fraction and sharpened the bottle a little and it came out like this:

ebayologist, thanks for the tips...I did do some research today on both cams...and they are pretty similar.
Im going for the Canon because I have played with it several times already...

thanks again!
