So i just bought the D40 a few days ago like i said i would. man this !!!! is easy as hell to use. For first time dslr users considering of buying, i don'tthink you'll regret it. I havent opened the manuals or instructions on anything yet so i really dont know exactly what its capable of... I've just beenplaying around with the features and snapping whatever i see. I took a few photography courses a couple years ago and worked with black/white film so isomewhat know what im doing

Ebayologist or anyone else: whats really the difference between memory cards? Igot two 2gb SD's for $40 sumthin bucks with my D40. The lady was trying to talk me into some 'exxxtreeeeme III' memory card for like triple theprice. something to do with 40x speed and 200x. My shots get on to these memory cards just fine, is it really worth spending the extra cheddar on even fastermem cards?

^ I don't think it makes much difference unless you're shooting tons of frames per second - and the D40 doesn't have a big enough buffer so that isthe limiting factor rather than the card speed.

A better one could last longer but not always. I'm using pretty cheap ones and always make sure that I take the pictures off quickly.

I'm embarrased to post because I am a newbie (not to NT but to photography). I take mostly sports shots, Cavs specifically but I need help with thesettings. I have a Sony DSC-H7 because any camera with a removable or professional lens isnt allowed in the arena. This had a great zoom and from other sitesI've seen, can take good pics. What is a good setting for indoor sports under that type of lighting. This was from the most recent game, look how the skintones are kinda green. HELP and newbie please!

Be kind, these are some of my first shots. I just need help with these indoor sports shots, its gotta be the lighting in there. Sports mode isnt that great, Ineed to figure out a manual settin but there are so many options I dont know what to do.

^ depends on the type of lighting. I would experiment and see which one looks best.

My wife's Canon P&S has a setting in the white balance where you can take a shot and it calculates it from there - it works really well. Have a look inthe menu and see if there is something like that.

Yeah, it just accounts for the wavelength of the light you're shooting under.

I had a look at the manual online but I couldn't see a mode where you can get it to measure and calculate the white balance - but there are 3 differentfluorescent modes so would be worth trying those.

thanks, actually i do think on that same menu screen you have the 3 fluorescent lighting options then if you scroll over more, it has an auto white balancewhere im pretty sure it detects and sets it for you, ill try all those options tomorrow at the warriors game. what about the baseball and flower pics, decentat least?

PS - anyone know where i can learn about: ISO values, shutter speeds, aperture values, and exposure values. in the book i got w the camera it just tells me howto adjust em but not what any of em means and theres so many possible combinations, im clueless as to what each means. im sure if i knew id take better pics.

someone tell me again how to do that ?

What i did was turn off all of the lights in my room, set the shutter speed to about 13 secs, and as a fellow NT'er did i covered a flashlight w/ anapkin and wrote in the air w/ it.. hope i was of help

none of that bro

my little contribution.. haven't posted in a while due to finals week

mad people came in the classroom and unexpectedly hooked up Guitar Hero to the tv and heads kept comin in

critiques/comments please? thanks in advance

it has an auto white balance where im pretty sure it detects and sets it for you,

Just watch that auto isn't just the mode where it selects the closest of the presets - gives variable results especially indoors.

does anybody have like a chart or something that you can cut out for personal use that has all the shutter speeds, iso, and f-stops on it? where you can useequivalent exposures? my old photography teacher had one but i never had a chance to copy it and make one of my own

Damn I have enough money now to upgrade from a Canon Powershot S5 IS to a D40, or keep the S5 and get an ipod....

(im using a 20GB non-color joint)

Is there any major difference in image quality between a D40 and a S5 IS?

i think im figuring out how to fix my pics. i just set it to ISO and the iso goes automatically but i adjust something either 0.3, 0.7, something likethat and that seems to make a difference. these 2 pics were taken a second or 2 apart and in the one the skin tones appear green and in the second, it seemsmuch more natural. next time im gonna look real lame but im gonna take a notebook to a cavs game and try to remember what i do when im shooting.

its not much of a difference but i think it looks a lot better in the second one.

ISO really doesn't have much if anything to do with tonal range. ISO refers to the noise or grain of an image. Your issue seems more of it's mostly awhite balance/color caste issue. But I haven't read this post in day or so I'll read the rest and get myself up to date with the issue at hand. AndI'm sure the lighting at the q or the gund as my boy from cleveland still calls it is probably quite a bit off daylight so you really have to white balancequite well. The first picture looks green, and I'm sure with even some basic photo editing software you could remove the color caste. The second onedoesn't seem perfect maybe a hair yellow but its not bad by anymeans.

And "Is there any major difference in image quality between a D40 and a S5 IS?"

Yes. Probably not as much as like DSLR vs. P&S and most of you guys will probably never really applicably use the full capabilities of the image quality ofeven an entry level dslr has but nonetheless you get what you pay for...

k, ill be anxiously waiting for your advice for real. the other thing i noticed is that the Q has all different lights all over. i hate the ones that wraparound the whole arena at club level, they are very bright and i think those might distort me a little too? its hard to pick a light setting since it seems tochange throughout the game too...anyways, any help is a plus. i think my best ones have been on the iso setting with me messing with the EV not even knowingwhat im doing but they are the most accurate to true color. thanks ebay!

belle155 Well first just a couple sort of logistics issues. I think the last NBA game I went to was Knicks v Bullets game. And I say Bulletsbecause at the time the Wizards were the Bullets...

So I don't remember exactlyhow it was lit. But just based on how it appears on TV it seems bright enought that ISO shouldn't been an issue. That is unless you're really far backin the darker areas. If you're close to court as it appears you are in those photos you shouldn't have any problem maintaining a low iso with areasonably faster shutter speed like maybe 1/250 should be able to pick up most motion beyond maybe ball motion like shots and passes with a relatively shallowbut still effective depth of focus like maybe f4 to maybe at most f8. I think an ISO of some where inbetween 200-400 should be fine especially if you shoot atas high res as your camera can shoot and then resize. As far as the color cast issue is concerned I think KDWallace pretty much covered it in that you need towhite balance. I think you should just get it as good as you can there and then either use photoshop or any other camera editing software to fix the rest. Isee that it adds alittle more work and some people have apprehension to editing photos but I think if you want good photos that's the way to do it... Alsomake sure and just use the optical zoom, digital zoom is going to create pixelly photos...

If you want to shoot in mode other than just fully manual which probably would slow you down a bit in taking pictures. I'd shoot in shutter speed priority.set it to like 1/250 when there is action or 1/500 if you want to pick up ball motion and still it. and like 1/60 or 1/125 if nobody is really moving. Thenjust let the apperture be what it is and remember to focus or just let it auto focus and set the iso at something in between maybe 200-400. Like I have vagueunderstand of that EV business but really think shutter speed priority would be the easiest solution to good pictures. And just like I said just white balanceas well as you can at the game and the photos that turn out well just use like photoshop or whatever photo editing software you have to fix any color castissues that remain.

You guys should say what camera your using when you post pics. Would be helpful to some. much appreciated.
