Yeah, it looks exactly like the D40/D40x. it doesn't really have a lot of improvements though, besides the sensor cleaning and 10MP. only reason I would buy one is cause now the kit lens comes with VR. I'm more exited to see how the Rebel XSi turns out.

i like the d60 more than my d100

Also, theres a few new cameras coming out in the spring time like the new Canon Rebel XSi, which looks amazing, packed with features for a good price. ($900)

... and the Nikon D60, which is a minor upgrade from the D40x and comes with an updated VR Kit lens.

I dont really have a budget out there, but I've been looking at the Nikon D300. How is that?

The D300 is probably one of the best Nikons out... (Im not sure, but i know itspretty damn good.) I think thats a hell of a jump though, but you'll get used to how to use the camera in no time. at least in auto mode.

^^^Nikon's newest high end DSLR. Since you're just starting out, go with something like a Nikon D40/D40x/D80 or Canon XT/XTi. Also purchase this bookto learn the basics of photography: The DigitalPhotography Book by Scott Kelby

If you've never used a DSLR before I wouldn't recommend buying a D300... That's a lot of camera for someone who probably doesn't really knowhow to use it to begin with. I'd go with one of the entry level ones and possibly wait for the nikon D60 if nikon's are your move. And if you reallyhave that much to spend on the camera buy a couple different lens to go along with it. Worst come to worst down the road you can sell the body and upgrade andyou'll have nice set of lens that will work perfectly well with your future Nikons.

If you just want a camera to "stunt" if you will or whatever choice word or phrase is you there are lot more flashy cameras (like real photographyheads will take notice type $%!% ) than a Nikon D300 for not a whole lot more...

Received the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 yesterday so took a few shots. Love the shallow depth of field, pictures are sharp. Only thing is it focuses kinda slowcompared to my Sigma 10-20mm and Nikon 24-85mm.

After looking at this on my computer, I think I should have focused on my son, not on my wife's back. What are you're thoughts?

While I agree that would have been better, I don't particularly like the angle to begin with it. It has really strange foreground/background relationship.Also I think boucing the flash off the ceiling would help create more ideal lighting situation. And left to right the photo doesn't function, it's waytoo right weighted and the focus on the foreground where its really only your wife on the right in the foreground enforces that weight. Compositionally itfeels really tight, my guess is that lens is probably a quite good single person portrait lens (like busts, and photos similar to your first one) but not sogreat for really getting a well compose scene if you will, especially indoors. Also the bokeh of that lens feels odd.

^^^Thanks ebay. I was just using the rule of 3rds, but I know its not always the right thing to do based on what you're shooting. Still trying to figureout when and when not to use it. Any thought of how/when to apply this technique?

And can you explain the ideal look of bokeh?

I did bounce the flash off the ceiling at 60 degrees, guess I should of tried 75 and/or 90 degrees.

And I really need to get out more to take some outdoor pics. But by the time i get off work it's already dark and gotta do "Dad" stuff. Plus itsbeen raining here for almost the whole month.

Personally I think the rule of thirds is overrated... It works when its done to a T but I think if you just try to find a porportion in every composition thebulk of your photos will be good. Because sometimes thirds is hard to get exact but maybe 1/4s is easier to see or whatever porportion it might be in thatparticular situation. The idea comes from large format. And one of the reason the rule of thirds is common because its usually the easiest spot as its a verysimple basic porportion. I use the grid in my graphic design so that sort of helps me see porportions, but you might try finding a grid that fits on your lcdor worst come to worst, get like that plastic cover material they make for various electronics and just draw a grid on it and then put that on the LCD.

Well i'm sure if you google bokeh you'll find some Japanese photos that are absurdly good as the Japanese love the bokeh... Bokeh looks best with filmhonestly but it that photo it just looks blured, it should be more "smooth" less just like you went in photoshop and blurred it.

I just eyeballed the lines but even so you can tell that your wife doesnt really fall on the line. Like if the middle of the back of her head fell on thatline, I'm not sure I'd like the photo but it would be better...

My budget is around $200-$300 so I know I'm not getting anything high end, but am torn between two different options on eBay. Basically I'm looking for a good all-around lense and/or a dedicated macro lens; essentially a lens to replace my kit lens for walk-around shots and then a dedicated macro lens. I've seen two different auctions on eBay that have intrigued me but I can't seem to decide between them both. You can still take great pics inside. Taking indoor pics is the hardest. Why not try and master it. Not that I mastered
my camera (I am still learning), but i think the more you use it in different situations the better you will get.

^^^Sup Jimmy. I don't think you can really go wrong with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 + 70-300mm. from the research I did when buying my Sigma's, it seems theoverall build quality is better than the Tamron. And the consensus on photography message boards seems to favor the Sigma over the Tamron in regards to picturesharpness, focus speed and build quality.

But my research was for the Nikon mounts.

Also, I'm not sure about the 47st.photo seller. Don't you think that deal is a little too good to be true. They might be selling grey-market orrefurbished lenses. I've heard good things about Cameta Auctions though.

And thanks ebay. I'm just eye balling it when it comes to the grid. Not sure if I want to draw a line across the protective sheet on the LCD. Maybedistracting when I'm reviewing the pics.

I like the concert pics. I never knew that G9 could take such good pics in lowlight.

^It wouldn't surprise me if they make an lcd protector with a grid. I have a TLR Yashica Mat that as gridded viewfinder. looks kinda like this...

Camera doesn't look like that, just the ground glass. I don't own a hassy flex body... I don't have guap like that...

Man, how am I supposed to take pics for a panorama? I just tried and i did horrible... i just put the cam on a tripod and took 1 shot then rotated the cam tothe right, took shot 2, rotated and took shot 3. came out horrible, PTGui cant even stitch em...
