^^^^Dude done't even trip. When I first got my camera, I felt the same way. All my shots were looking pretty bunk and I was getting pretty pissed how I could take better shots on my point and shoot then the DSLR. It is true what they say, good photos come from the person taking it and the camera. You get it once you set your exposure, iso and aperture settings. Granted the kit lens only does so much, but once you mater that, then when you move to a better lens, things will start off pretty fresh......

Damn...that is a sick pany shot. The weather makes it that much doper though....AND CLOUDS! Got to love it! Dope stuff....

Love this shot as well. Not sure if it s the lighting or that glow she has, or if it's cause it's black and white, or just cause I can't shoot that type of stuff at all. Dope stuff Quick! Always like your work......

This is from last night at a concert. Shot with my Canon G9. I think I had the ISO way too high but I had to make due since I couldn't bring my DSLR, let alone a camera in general. There not great pics and I shot about over 50 and these were probably the best. Just a lot of bad photos and I am just losing faith in Point and Shoots all together......

There's really nothing to "do" with bokeh. It's just shallow depth of field i.e. low numbered f-stops or opening up the lens. There are ways to get it to show up more "bokehesque" with situations like where there are reasonably bright lights in an otherwise dark area, just the way the light gets picked up bokeh will happen. But if you want really good bokeh there two things, really a good lens (preferably a prime) and shooting film. I'm not really that into bokeh but it basically has to do with the glass and how it breaks down light.

Here is close up of photo of mine I've shown before on here to give you an idea of Bokeh with just daylight. (It's like F4@1/60 shot with 80mm prime which is roughly the focal length equivalent to a DSLR 50mm)

Bokeh will be the new panny, hdr, and globe. haha.

Good stuff Quickster I also like that first shot the most.

Also good job on those fong... It came out pretty good for concert type of pics, I can never get those
kind of shots right.

Peace.

DIY - Create your own Bokeh

create your own BokehBokeh is an adaptation from a a Japanese word meaning blur. In photography this term is used to describe the quality of the areas in the picture which are not in focus.

When referring to Bokeh, we can distinguish some of it characteristics:

- Is the light/dark gradient smooth or sharp?

- What shape will a small dot of light take what it is in the Bokeh area? (mirror lenses for example, create a bagel like Bokeh)

We can play with those two variant to create a special Bokeh.

You will need :

  • One large aperture lens (a Canon 50mm F1.8 is used here)
  • One sheet of black paperboard

1. Cut and shape the sheet to make a fake lens hood. The Diameter is made so that it snugly fits on the lens.

DIY Bokeh 01

2. In the middle of the filter the wanted bokeh shape is cut out - in out example a heart is used. I'm not sure how big a hole the shape can be. But you can check it right away by just looking through the viewfinder. On the 50mm lens @ F1.8 a 15mm heart gives a metering value equal to F3.2, so it can probably be a little bigger.

3. Set your camera to its lowest aperture value (completely open).

Here are two shots to demonstrate this technique - one with a bare lens and the other with the hearted hood: (I leave it as an exercise to tell which is which smile.gif

heart bokehregular bokeh

Here are the parameters for the example shown above:

  • Lens - Canon 50mm F1.8
  • "Lens hood" Diameter: 70mm (2.75 inch)
  • Hole diameter: 15mm (0.6inch)

Here are two more great examples for this technique from RottieLover (note - there only one "real" heart in each picture):

Do you have a cool bokeh? show off on the comments or on the flickr group.

Just bought b/w film image

Do I need a specific lens filter? I've noticed some pho's use yellow filter.

Is polarizer a good filter for B/W? Sounds stupid to me since I think pl is for color, but could it give me more depth in b/w film shots?

Gonna do my very first shoot tomorrow with my Minolta and no filters or nothing imageimageimage

edit: how do i get that ghosting effect like ^^^.

about loveforair's pics: 1st is nice...a bit out of focus though. 2nd is cool because the whole trailing feature but I dont like the angle it's at or the slight tilt, I think it would've looked better if you were on the other side of the street and caught more the building and less glare from the street lights..3rd pic is niiiiiice...the ghosting effect makes me think it really captures "the city" environment in night life...fast paced, like a blur if you will. But that's just me.

Im feelin it, no jay-z
