Manual focus is much easier on this lens as opposed to the kit lens. Great Lens.

can someone recommend me a cheap starter lens and where i should get it. i just got a canon xti. thanks!

a friend referred me to the standard 50mm 1.8 lens, but how much should i be paying for that thing?

I'm sorry but to me Dave Hill is horrible. Some of his stuff is good but most is bad. That HDR stuff has gotten wayyyyyy out of hand. I think he givesphotographers a bad name and graphic artists. I would love to know what experienced photogs think about HDR and Dave Hill such as Ebayologists.

@Santi

Great pics as usual bro. Gotta love how sharp the prime is compared to the kit lens. The manual focusing is fine but if you can have af all the better right? Stepping up to a d80 soon!

Yeah, the lens is pretty sharp. Wish i could get a D80, haha. Might upgrade in a year or so. I just got this D40 a few months ago.

As far as photographers who OD on HDR like Dave Hill and the bevy of the others lets just say there are plenty of far better photographers whom I disdain a lotmore and those people more often than not are reasonably technically sound photographers who's work I just don't happen to like. Because whether youare a good photographer or not when you use @!%$ like it makes anyone with half a brain think you're hiding behind it. It literally looks like a luminismpainting, it's just unnecessary !%%# that might "look cool" but it doesn't add anything to your photo beyond making me think it'sprobably not a very good photograph to begin with and instead of having a sound well lit/exposed photograph it looks like you $$#@$#@ painted the thing.. Endof the day, HDR and all the other gimmicky things are small potatoes, sure they take pictures of celebs or musicians or models and good for them, smallpotatoes photographically it still remains, thusly I am not really too bothered by it.

More power to you if you want to do that as like hobby or whatever, do you, I'm clearly a purest that's probably been evident from page #1, I deal withphotography on a high art level not commercial at all. I have little to no interest in commercial photography, it's full of hacks and herbs beyond theupper echelons of it that's filled in great deal with current or former art photographers moonlighting in the commercial realm for stupid guap for the mostpart.

HDR has actually been around for a lot longer...its only been recent that it became popular.
i have no problem with people being purist and all but to me it seems that you guys look down upon people who are not on the same level as you are.

^^ I don't look down on people who aren't experienced or seasoned a photographer I am, and honestly in the grand scheme I'm not that much ofveteran photographer myself, I just happen to know more than most of NT. I think the fact I've helped probably an easy 50% of people in this thread one wayor another is testament to that I don't think I look down on anyone. I just think that HDR +*@$ is so kitsch and trite it's ridiculous... Like thegloble thing I'd never seen so it's interesting, I would never do it, but it's intriguing. But with these gimmicky photoshop or whatever +*@$, theyhave such a short life span and then the "interesting" factor wears off and it's kitsch and trite. Good photography is good photography andalways will be clearly tastes and styles change but gimmicks are short lived. HDR is a gimmick anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves. So whenyou're a commercial photography like Dave Hill (who before this I had no clue of) who's work as far as I can tell 100% functions around a trite gimmickall I can do is shake my head and be like "Wow..."... When it comes to photography I don't waste my time with gimmicks, if photography was just ahobby I could understand wanting to play around with the latest and greatest gimmick as you have nothing to loose, personally I have better things to do.That's not looking down on anyone, that's just a fact of the matter.

i respect that.

its just that from a different point of view..thats what it seems like...little comments here and there...like it shouldntve been done or it shouldntve beenpopularized. yeah nowadays i see that it is mostly a gimmick but what can you do....

i am pretty sure that since i did a lot of HDR on my friends car is the reason this HDR/dave hill discussion started...but hey..thats just how i like to do mypost processing. and its mostly because i like that kind of style. bottom line is..the person taking the picture has to be the most happy with their workright?

but hey...since you do have a lot more experience than 50% of the people in here...please let me know if i am doing wrong with my "photography" orsnapshots...and check out my flickr.

when it comes to photography Im on 0 level. But I truly appreciate a great photo and I get inspiration from just simply looking at a great photo. And thatswhy it seems like I look down upon some people. Me being a graphic designer I only do it for the love of it. In my spare time I do it. And fortunately I havebeen good enough to land some clients for some good money but the whole Photoshop/Illustrator scene has gotten so horrible lately that its not even worthcreating a piece. The d-riding and biting of some people has really spun out of control but thats for another thread. I could talk for hours on how theinternet has helped and also somewhat ruin good graphic artists but I will wait until I get a blog for that

But just take a look at this thread for instance. A couple pages back someonediscovered a pic of a "mini globe" 10 pages after that people copied and tried to make quick and easy hack jobs of their own "mini globes"instead of taking the time and actually LEARNING how to properly do it. I think with all things though there will always be people who love it, people who copyit, and people who butcher it. Thats life i guess. Anyway get back to the pics people!

Wowzer. Looks like I stirred up a debate. Interested to hear what people think of the photo though. I do respect both sides. I just wanted to try out that kindof post processing.

Sorry. I wasnt trying to take shots at you. I understand you were just trying different effects out. I just wanted to get ebay's opinion on Dave andHDR thats all.

No worries bro. I didn't take it negatively at all.

patriots i understand what youre saying.

the sudden rise of people (specially ones who are in their teens) getting a dsLr pretty much ruined it for me. i mean ... they expected to become overnightprofessional with their new camera. most of the ones i know of didnt even appreciate photography but they immediately jumped on the bandwagon just becauseeveryone is buying one.

btw ive known about the mini planet but never really tried it out...only recently that i got a chance to do it.

here is my orig panoramic.

heres the mini planet.

it was merely a try to see if i had the ability to do it.

just my 2cents btw..no hate or anything..

more pics..no hdr or anything....just normal photoshop adjustments (levels, brightness, contrast, and a bit of saturation, some dodge/burning)

i think photoshop is to what dark room is to film photography post process.
