What do you mean it wont let you? Will it let you shoot at a different aperture, or not at all? Take the lens off the camera, rotate the aperturering all the way to f/22 or whatever the smallest aperture is and lock it. then put it back on the camera and it should work.

I currently shoot with a point & shoot (have some pictures buried like 100 pages back

) but I've been considering a DSLR for a bit.

Could anyone recommend a cheap Nikon DSLR body? Like, let's say you were on a budget and you wanted to get the most out of your dollar. What kind of a bodywould you get? New or used, it doesn't matter. I've already decided what lenses I would be getting but I'm not sure where to start on the body.

If so, would you recommend it as a 2nd lens?
Right now im using the stock lens that was supplied in my XTi kit.

Any info would be appreciated..

I have that lens aka nifty 250. It would couple nicely with your kit lens. I definitely recommend it.

Recently, due to new releases of models, the D40 has gone down in price pretty significantly. It's essentially the same as the D40X (whatI've been shooting with) except it shoots at 6.1mp instead. I swear by this site, adorama.com because they sell new AND used equipment at a good price. Allof their used equipment are things like salesmans samples and stuff like that. Here's a link if you're interested to one for $374 with the 18-55mm lenswhich is, in my opinion, an outstanding kit lens. It's essentially a macro lens. It's what I use for my WDYWT photos. It gives a great DoF. I got myD40X on eBay and it came with the 55-200mm lens which I would only slightly recommend. It's great for long-distance shots, but between the two lenses youkinda miss the ability to shoot at a medium distance and get really outstanding shots. The D40X is gonna cost you a pretty penny, but its main purpose (fromwhat I understand) was to provide the users with the ability to make larger high quality prints by slapping in an extra 4mp. Plus, it's pretty small andlightweight. I would strongly advise going to a photo shop and asking them to let you take a few shots with some of the cameras. For the essentially"base" models of the Nikon dSLR family, I would say that a lot of it is personal preference. I didn't notice any immense changes until you passthe $800 price tag. I wouldn't necessarily swear myself to Nikon just yet, though. I have a Canon Rebel G film camera that I loved for a long time and itwas great. My girlfriend shoots with a D40X and I fell in love with it instantly so I crossed over (although I would hardly say that SLR and dSLR cameras areexactly the same thing). Plus, I really prefer the Nikon GUI. If you know anything about cameras, you should be able to use it right out of the box.

Sorry for the essay, but I faced the exact same problem so I was just trying to give some insight. Hope that helps!

Hey man, I really appreciate the feedback. The D40 seems like a pretty solid camera for the price. The D40X doesn't seem to be that much moreso I may consider that as well. How do you guys feel about the D80? It's a quite a bit more money but it has more features... I guess what I'm tryingto say is whether those features justify the few hundred dollars extra?

The only time I've spent with any of the other D series Nikon dSLRs has been in stores and, honestly, I can't tell that big of a difference. If youwere a professional photographer and you knew exactly what kind of subjects you were shooting, then it would probably matter. I've borrowed and played witha bunch of different lenses and I can definitely say that the lens makes the difference. The extra features seemed to me like they were great, but for me thisis just a hobby at the time being and I could do just fine without them and could use the few extra hundred dollars to buy [a] lens/lenses depending on whereand what you're getting. The rest of these guys have probably been at this longer than I have, though, so i would just wait for some ideas from them if Iwere you.

Not too familiar with Nikons since i'm a Canon head but i used my uncles D40 over the weekend and it felt really small to me. I didn't like the fell ofit just cause it felt super small. Probably cause i'm used to my XSi and i also have a battery grip on mine so it's a lot bigger. Also one drawback tothe D40 will be some lenses not autofocusing. But if i were you i'd go to a store and try out all the SLR's there whether it be Nikon or Canon and gofrom there. Just don't buy it in store since they'll charge a lot more than online prices.

I got this lens along with my XTI kit. It's convenient to have, but the lens isn't as sharp as I would like. Until I can get a new one, this shouldsuffice. But if you are looking to buy it seperate, then I would research some other lenses as well to see what's out there.

the D40 by all means is a great camera but like dude said it is alot smaller than you think and the lack of AF on some lenses is a huge drawbackbecause alot of great lenses will not work on the camera like the NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 and Tokina 11-16mm for example. The D80's only plus is meerly the factthat is that it has a greater list of compatable lenses but it comes at a larger premium. Both the cameras share the same crappy exposure meter (the D40 D40xD60 and D80 tend to overexpose) and menu system and throw in an extra 6 megapixels or so which won't even end up mattering unless you print some hugeprints out.
Even being a Nikon guy I'd say go with a rebel for the ease to get around all the Lens b-s. The ability to work picture styles (the levels of saturation, contrast, sharpening, and hue) is alot more flexible (they have the ability to go to +2 or -2 unlike nikons (x)+ or (x)-). And also the addition of Live Viewwill make your transition from PS cameras the SLR's a little easier

sorry for the ninjahood pics. i forgot to resize

^Since you wanted to see what 1.4 is like, checkout this shot i took with my old 60mm macro lens i had. Aperture is at 2.8 on this one. Pretty cool picture,i've posted it here before but this was months back and is buried way deep in this thread. Was playing with the lens and took a picture of a $10 bill.

btw, thanks everyone for the feedback. Getting a DSLR will be a ways off (no money + no jobs = no camera) so I guess I still have some time to make up my mind.

Going to Seoul and Hong Kong in a couple days so hopefully I can contribute some pictures soon

Just curious to know what lens would you recommend instead and what are you comparing your lens too? Thanks ...
