That's a great camera. My dad gave me his from the 60's and it still takes great pics.
There's a flickr group dedicated to it: http://www.flickr.com/groups/spotmatic/

Check my photostream out, i used that and a medium format in Europe back in 2006. Most of the street shots were with the Spotmatic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/84784982@N00/

If you look at your photo above, pull the solo black ring on the right with the silver line through the top. Pull it as far as it will go gently and thengive it another little pull and the back will open up. Flip the silver "line" and that will be your film winder when you want to load.

Flick from today's shoot. (Droop-E of Sic Wid It Records) i'll post more up later this week

How exactly are shots like this taken? With the lighting appearing to be so low?

What do you mean low? The light source is high and above. Look at the shadows.
But what I'm saying is there obviously had to be way more light in the arena right? I've never been to madison square...nor did I see thatgame last night but I would imagine like any other arena that it would be bright as hell and picture like that wouldn't be possible. No?

I don't know how MSG is lit but I refuse to believe that's just the game lighting. I doubt that's even during a game, but if it is during a gamethen look, the whole court isn't even illuminated, which tells me one of two things. Either it's not during a game whoever just turned on those fewlights from above. Or if it was during a game which I would find odd, they probably just used powerful strobes and closed down the lens. Light is relative, ifyou close down the lens and use a POWERFUL like serious strobe you can make the regular light in the arena look reasonably dark I'm sure far darker than itnormally appears...

i think that was from last night games - I don't know how the dude got those effect like if the light was just on lebron but good lord it did come outreally nice and no the area and the court is pretty well lid - so once again I don't know how he got this shot and maybe it was how you stated either waythey came out super good!

If it was during the game it's a strobe simple as that. Photoshop? clearly there are artificial corrections, but I refuse to believe that's just gamelight with the background photoshopped that dark. If that was possibly strobes would be obsolete. Clearly they're not, so simply "photoshop" isnot the answer. If that were possible no one would ever go thru the pain in the *$% of serious artificial lighting, they'd just photoshop it.

yeah I think you are right ebay - perhaps you should post something done with strobe lights that is similar to the picture above - i mean the effect that is.

either way I think they are great man ..

One of my favorite photographers, P.L. Dicorcia, "Hannah" from his series "Lucky 13". Same idea. Strobe casting light from above to createhard shadows and fast falling light. There is more to that image as there is light from bellow but nonetheless…

So are you saying that there was a strobe of light that just happened to flash when he went up and when you take a picture with no flash, it just cause thebackground to get dark cause the strobe acts as your external flash? Where is the strobe coming from? Other people taking pics or light from thestadium......or am I just taking this strobe term out of context?

Fong strobe lights are what the photographer used -

qksLvrtypeS use strobe along with a flash andanother set of lights for all his latest pictures ...

eBayI see why you like that guys work - I like it just as much .. yum

I think someone set up some form of artificial light. And triggered it. Theoretically it could been some miraculous #$#% and not planned, but I find that hardto believe. The strobe is from above, possibly even on the backboard or shot clock but could be as high as the lights from the ceiling. I have no idea andI'm sure depending on how you step the light and what kind of light you could do either. When I say strobe it could just be a simple as a speed light butmy guess is it's a strobe. No nba court is lit like that, it's clearly artificial.

Just got my Spotmatic "serviced" Guy at the camera shop said I have to find the battery online but I'm about to cop a new lens and maybe atripod. Got a cap, 2 rolls of film, and a free lens cleaner

No flash mounted to the camera and the aperture opened up relatively wide. I vote either luck or PS.I don't really follow basketball so it's your callif it was during the game or not. The two posted pictures were taken about an hour apart.

What about the second shot?

There is no way that the apeture and iso can be so low for a shot like that.....unless his lens + the Mark 2 can add to getting such a great shot.

Those strobes under the jumbotron are triggered with Pocket Wizards. My guess would be that they extremely under-exposed the image, maybe even using NDfilters.
