I did Handheld.

You can use a tripod man, there were like 4 or 5 people with one and I didn't even see any cops. But thats a place where a bunchof photographers go so, I doubt you would get much trouble.

I think sometimes if you just do stuff and don't look nervous about it, no one really questions you. And I totally agree about the towers

Hey guys I'm tied between the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L and Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS.
Anyone recommend which lens I should get?

Did you crop the cat at all? I like the shot but it would of have been better with a slighter wider view of where he is standing, it looks interesting. AlsoI'll recommend you make the picture straight it looks slightly off CCW ..

The bridge is superb man .. I really like it a lot -- Normally I would say all the crap on the lens needs to go but on this picture it adds to the entire looksince it looks like it was bad bad bad conditions ... nice job

Stupid Problem of mines ..

Like I need all these .. lol

Also I was thinking about upgrading my lens to a Nikkor f/1.8 50MM. Anyone out there with a d40 currently use or have that lens?
when you're zoomed in all the way at 55mm, the lowest aperture you can have is f/5.6. but if you notice, when you put it to 18mm, you can have an aperture of f/3.5. you can get the bokeh effect.. it's a bit trickier, but if you're observng objects from afar, it's alright.

alright thats makes sense. thanks. right now im shooting on Aperture Priority so when ever take it down to like f/5.6 that shutter speed is always mad long.

If i shoot on M does that allow me to adjust the aperture without changing the shutter speed? it does it automatically change to allow the the necessary amount of light in?
with M, you can control everything. shutter speed along side with aperture

My camera didn't come with a manual on controlling the settings so it took me a minute to figure it out at first. Here's my quick guide to theD40/D40X:

A=Aperture Priority: You set the aperture and the camera adjusts shutter speed accordingly. When you're looking through the viewfinder, the number on thefar left is the number of seconds if it has the quote marks (i.e. 4") or the fraction of a second (i.e. the number 4 means 1/4 of a second)

S=Shutter (Speed) Priority: You set the shutter speed you want and the camera adjusts the aperture accordingly. This is pretty straightforward. 4"=4seconds, 4=1/4 of a second.

P=Program: Basically, you program some settings and it saves them. It's essentially your personal version of auto. I use it when I want to get a shot thatI don't have the time to compose myself.

M=Manual: Turn the wheel to A, set the aperture you want. Then, turn the wheel to S and set the shutter speed you want. After setting both of those, turn thewheel to M to shoot with the aperture and shutter speed you chose.

Nikon may as well only put those 4 options on the wheel. Quite frankly, I can compose a shot 100% manually, but for the life of me can't figure out whatthe f*** the other icons with are supposed to be doing. I mean, I understand their purpose and what they're designed to do, but I honestly don't noticethat much of a difference between them.

As for the bokeh effect, you can get that effect with, ideally, any picture. You just have to compose it the right way. It's a lot easier with macro shots,of course. But, if you meter and focus the camera just right at just the right distance from the subject you can get the DoF that you want. At the same time, though, the 50mm f/1.4/1.8 would definitely get the job done pretty darn easily. On your camera (like mine) you have a cropped body so you'd actually beshooting with the equivalent of a roughly 65mm lens or something like that. When the 35mm comes out (at a great price, incidentally) you'll have a true50mm lens...well, actually 52mm, so the narrow DoF that you want will me much clearer (maybe "clearer" isn't the right word...).

Sorry about the little essay there. Just trying to be helpful. Good luck, man.

Yo Boricua how much are you selling one of those for?

I know this is a very cliche and overdone style, but could someone give me a quick schooling on Terry Richardson style of Photography? Is most of it done PP?

What do you mean? The spiked out lights (don't know the photo terminology for it). You just need to shot with a longer aperture. I forget whatit was at but I think it was at 12 or 13. Someone can do that photo info thing for me......

Speaking of that, do different lenses do different shapes? On my fisheye, they really get sharp as apposed to my canon kit that I did that with.

no offense to the Sony owners but theres a reason why in every CC alll the Canon stuff is gone most of all the Nikon is gone and everything Sony is therecollecting dust till it gets marked down to 50% or more off ...

mjbetch allot of lens giving long exposures at night will automaticly produce that effect ... even the people that hate it have to suck it up but i can bewrong

Dude...return the Sony. Take the $300 and put it towards a Canon or a Nikon. Plus more lenses to get from those two brands then Sony stuff.

This is the first entry-level camera we've seen in 2008, so it's quite possible that we'll be back to reevaluate the Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 more favorably in the context of its competition. But for now, there are better, more interesting models from earlier years whose prices are dropping into its territory; the Nikon D40x or Canon EOS Rebel XTi if you're willing to forgo the image stabilization, or the slightly more expensive Pentax K10D if you're not. You can even opt for the similar and still-available two-year-old Alpha DSLR-A100, if you don't shoot a lot at high ISO settings, and put the money you save toward a better lens.

The good: In-body image stabilization; supports wireless flash.
b.gif
The bad: Loud; Sony doesn't have a stable of inexpensive lenses for consumers; oddly located, proprietary USB connector.

b.gif
The bottom line: The Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 is a solid entry-level dSLR that doesn't really stand out in its very competitive field
