I'm giving up cable. I'm getting a digital antenna that will get the basics (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, UPN, CW). They cost around $40.

Trying to decide between NetFlix and Hulu Plus. If anyone has both or one or the other then state the pros and cons. So far I've heard Hulu is good for t.v. shows and NetFlix is better for movies.

I have both Hulu Plus and Netflix. Hulu doesn't have new movies but it's great for catching certain shows you've missed. Netflix has a decent selection of movies but don't expect any recent blockbusters for a long time. Good selection of original series like SOA, Breaking Bad, Workaholics, TWD etc but a lot of great series like boardwalk empire aren't there.

Overall I wouldn't end my cable contract as you won't have ESPN, Showtime, HBO, etc. I mean it'll save you cash in the long run, but you'll end up being that guy who always wants to come through to watch a game or a fight.

I hate those guys, go to a bar son I'm not always trying to have people over. /rant

You don't watch premium cable shows? HBO, SHO?

Netflix is okay but it has its limitations.

Just call your cable company and ask them to get you a deal or you will cancel.

I find it better to have all three, local, basic and premium...plus Netflix.

I sell dish network/direct tv door to door. Don't cancel television I talk to people everyday who are trying to cut all television besides netflix/hulu and they seem miserable haha. Unless you don't care for sports would be the only exception and thats pushing it.

I did the whole Hulu and Netflix thing (and i still do)  Hulu is great for if you miss shows this season but Netflix has every single season of shows that mostly everyone enjoys.  Hulu movies aren't as good but thats where you switch over to netflix.

you still wont have espn (which doesnt bother me because basketball season is almost over)  but you can buy a league pass online and watch live games. (nfl, nba, mlb, nhl)

and as for the premium channels like HBO/Cinemax/Showtime and all that, i just borrow my In-laws hbogo password and watch all the shows and movies that way.

Hulu Plus
Pros: New episodes of many shows the next day
Cons: Still get commercials, albeit minor ones. If they don't carry the shows/channels you watch, then it's not as useful... obviously.

Netflix
Pros: Better movie selection. Huge selection of past TV seasons. No commercials.
Cons: Won't get many new release movies, not good for keeping up with current TV shows since they won't update until a season later

Check what shows/networks Hulu carries that you would actually watch... if he's just a couple then make an effort to watch them live with the antenna. If they carry a lot of what you normally watch, then just get both. Netflix TV selection will keep you busy if you haven't seen certain series and there's plenty of movies to keep you occupied.

And you should say please.

The only time I watch TV is for sports.

Netflix + streaming shows that aren't on Netflix ftw.

The only setback will be sports but if I can watch it online through a league pass then that will work.

I don't watch a lot of t.v. to begin with. I'll be saving around $40 a month ($500 per year). I can find better use for that money.

There's really no need for league pass subscriptions. All sports and premium channels can be watched online for free.
There are several sites out theer that offer movies, and tv shows and are current up to the most recent episode.

I've moved into my apt with NO cable 4 months ago and got a Jailbroken Apple TV instead. BEST decision I've made. All the sports I want, all the movies, shows, even LIVE TV AND PRON! PPV's too!! For free basically other than buying the device it's self. As Long as you have a good Internet connection you should be good. I really really recommend it. Also get a digital tv tuner so you can watch all your local channels in HD!!

How do you Jailbroken Apple TV?

^ buy one on craiglist like I did. Or buy a 1st or 2nd gen that's not jailbroken and do it yourself. Gotta buy it used tho cause only 3rd gen is in stores and you can't jailbreak that one

My cable is expensive (att uverse)
I already talked to them i only need sports channel and cartoon channels for the kids, they said they dont have that option smh

How do you get high speed internet at a price that is reasonable? Cable companies price their products in a way that purchasing only internet is like $10 bucks cheaper than internet, cable and phone.

If I wasn't living with a roommate and split the bill, I would cut the cable as well.
I have Too many old shows that be found on Netflix (I.e. Lost, Archer, Walking Dead etc etc) to start and catch up on that I don't need cable shows (which are mostly crap shows anyway, great example is the Discovery channel changing from learning to reality garbage).

But when it comes to sports and TNT etc, I plan on using a Slingbox. If you haven't heard, is a box that you connect to a cable box (in my parent's basement which is rarely used) which takes the show playing on the box and streams it online, which you and only you can access via Internet or iOS app.

If you have Internet through time warner then you will get espn service through watch espn/espn3

Netflix + plus my folks hbogo password, and download everything else I wanna watch,

I need to look into the slingbox or apple tv

There are some websites that stream everything sports related live, and other websites that stream all of the shows and movies I could ask for. Hook the HDMI cable from the laptop to your tv and you are in business. OP if you need any info on the sites just pm me. I haven't had cable for 3 years and haven't missed a beat.

Anyone here record their own shows?

If it isn't DVR....then....

Considering this Apple TV thing. What's the difference between the 1st 2nd and 3rd gen?

It's just pricing strategy. Just like McDonalds charges $4 for a sandwich but for $5 you can get a sandwich, drink and fries.

I can't hold back on cable because I need it for work. From what I've priced, their lowest is $37 for 1mbps. $55 for high speed and higher speeds that I didn't price. I'm going to stick with $55. That will be my only cable related bill after I cut out cable. Right now I pay around $96 for digital cable and internet combo.

Back in the day I was shelling out $145 easy for digital cable, DVR and internet. It's convenient but when I figure out how much I would save yearly, it wasn't worth keeping. I just find myself re-watching movies and shows that I've seen hundreds of times before. All the new shows I watch are on network t.v. and I will get those with the antenna.
