Vlade Divac makes surprise visit at Kings practice facility

While I was finishing an hour-long interview with new Kings coach Michael Malone in his office at the Sacramento Kings practice facility, there was a knock on the door. Who walks in? Kings GM Pete D'Alessandro, accompanied by a grinning Vlade Divac.

The former Kings center - whose No.21 jersey hangs from the rafters inside Sleep Train Arena - was coy about the purpose for his visit and said he planned to remain in Sacramento very briefly.

When I asked if he would be joining the new regime as an international scout or in some other capacity, he just laughed.

Currently, the Kings icon lives in Belgrade, where he heads Serbia's Olympic effort.

"The most important thing is that the Kings stayed," said Divac, who as usual, was wearing jeans and a short-sleeved T-shirt. "It will take some time (returning to elite status). People have to be patient. But the team is here."

Before walking off toward the practice facility with D'Alessandro, Divac said he would be back in town for the Kings home opener against Denver.

Sounds like some pretty big things are in store for the home opener after hearing Crown Downtown & Carmichael Dave on Twitter. Can't wait to watch it!

I'm pleasantly surprised that jimmer can dunk. Did they lower the rim or something?

I must've misread.

Maybe they have some cool Here We Stay type stuff for the game breaks.

Either that, or it's just the new owners flexing their money

It was misreported by RealGM, which doesn't help matters.

Anyway, I imagine it’s more along the lines of showing people what the new fan “experience” will be like. It takes more than just new ownership to recapture casual fans, so why not at least attempt to show a home audience something that would entice them into actually going to a game. In that sense, it’s an investment, rather than flexing money muscles…which they don’t need to do considering how much damn money they had to pay to keep the team lol.

Or more likely there will be some in game advertisements. I see that as more of a reality considering how tech savvy the new ownership group is and the way TV is going with Tivo.

Congrats to ESPN the Magazine on naming the Kings the worst franchise in pro sports! Further justification that attendance was a result of the ownership and not apathy for the organization.
