🎾 OFFICIAL AGASSI RETRO THREAD - ATC II 2024 Hot Lava “aged” retro 🎾

The knowledge being dropped in this thread is impressive. I was around 17 when Lavas came out and I played in them until I damn near poked a hole but my knowledge is zilch compared to you guys.

Appreciate the lessons fellas!

Connors is old school - but he da man tho

young punks like agassi & becker were too showy for him especially since they were coming up as his skills were declining

Connors couldn't take it that the torch for US tennis was being passed on. He loved the attention simple as that. He was a flashy player as well. It speaks volumes that to this day, he hasn't spoke to Krickstein who he beat at the Open and they were always good buddies. Also, Connors was not loved early on in his career. It wasn't until he made the "you may not like me but I like you" speech at the Open to the fans.

^ good post!

imo - agassi's game took longer than expected to develop into greatness

the whole image is everything mullet dayz campaign/marketing blitz really came before he was great
like he got pushed too early

can see why older players would have resented that at the time, ag wasn't living up to the hype - but was getting tons of attention regardless

I'm a little conflicted with Agassi. I think he played with a lot of heart, especially after coming back from his low world ranking and awesome final U.S. Open run in 2006 (I still remember him wearing Baghdatis out). His crocodile tears during his farewell speech was a bit hammy but whatever.

That being said, even he expressed some regret over the "Image is Everything" Nike campaign. He did an interview with Jim Rome about 4 years ago, expressing that by claiming image was everything, substance was nothing. Knowing what we know about that era with the awesome Challenge Court/80s mullet wig and how it was just a well planned marketing tactic, it makes you look at that era and the 1980s in particular as one of total crass flamboyance. Fortunately for Agassi, he was a great player without the accessories.

I think Connors and McEnroe were just jealous and being the ultra-competitive alpha male types, it was natural that they wouldn't like Generation X. It's a **** measuring thing. As much as I love their game and on-court flair, I probably wouldn't want to hang out with any of them haha.
i believe the "Image is Everything" was the Canon Rebel campaign

My folks were big Connors fans, but for me McEnroe was the ************* man!

Andre though. His kicks and outfits were insane.

Hybrids are as bad as all the Jordan hybrids and as such deserve to die. I'm going to laugh heartily at anyone I see wearing them.

Loving the pics of all the old clothing, reminds me I had quite a lot of it back in the day. Surely a retro is required Nike? Please?

Yes, indeedy.

My era was the 90's, so I never got to watch Connors, Mac, etc in their prime.  Obviously, I was an Agassi fan, but I didn't hate the other players.  I liked a lot of them Edberg, Chang, Lendl, Courier, Becker and, yes, even Sampras.  The only time I "hated" Pete & Jim was when they beat Andre... but that was about it.  I got to watch them (Pete & Jim) live and appreciated every minute of it.   It's crazy how the level of fanboyism is so bad nowadays... Fed fans and Rafa fans and Nole fans going at it all the time in the other forums.  I never got that feeling back in the day... then again, we didn't have the internet and social media.

Totally agree with you SinnerP. I loved Andre, but never disliked Pete except for when he beat Andre. I think the thing that gets so many people angry nowadays is that everyone wants to declare either Federer or Nadal as the greatest player of all time.

Royals dropped in Brazil of all places? Just saw the nicekicks post. Hopefully this means a closer release date for US. But I guess it could mean this release will be very weird in how they allocate stock. I haven't thirsted over a pair of kicks like this in a long time.

Krickstein always had the best outfits IMO- fila (when fila was dope!) clothing and nike on feet!

Actually atc hybrids fresh I think the Jean material version might be fresher in person. Those other hybrids Nike and Jordan drop is a fail. But Nike might've dropped a cult classic, I wouldn't be surprised if agassi heads would be trying to cop hybrids a few years from now admiring that greatness.
