Not always the case. Midnight blooms, for example. You can only truly appreciate those in person. Pictures don't do them much justice.

i thought they looked better in pics, but when I got them in hand I had to let them go

True. The France Air Maxim 1 looked great in pictures to me, but when i got them i was underwhelmed
