Official "Going to Vegas in..." Vol. II "It was time"

Drai's managing director on Nightlife Trends

HOW HAVE THE DRAI’S LIVE CONCERTS BEEN GOING?
It’s gone incredibly well for us. Our gamble was to see if the live events worked. If everyone’s focused on one thing in the club, it was a risk. For the artists and entertainers that we’ve booked, it’s been a success every time. So we’re going to stick with that formula.

Usually with the Drai’s Live performances it’s a 45-minute concert, not just one guy but a full band, with production, lighting. The performances on Sundays are specifically related to hip hop, and steadily every night our numbers are growing. We’ve had Nas, Busta Rhymes, J Cole, Too-Short. [The artists] get there early, sing five or six hits, hang out. It’s a different vibe that’s unique to Sundays. I’d put it up head to head against any other club’s industry night.

Along with that we’ll still have DJs. We want to be the venue that takes the DJ and makes his reputation, rather than [bringing in someone who’s] already a headlining DJ.

HOW DOES WHAT YOU’RE DOING REFLECT LARGER TRENDS IN NIGHTLIFE?
I feel like 2015-16 is going towards those live performances rather than a focus on the DJ. The DJ will still be relevant, but I really see [the draw] being an actual concert or something to see rather than the guy pushing the buttons.

I also see the music format pretty aggressively changing. Since house music is already mixed, live acts are generally pop, hip hop and R&B. I see that music being played more in every club—Omnia building a hip hop room, Hakkasan using their hip hop room, Surrender booking Ice Cube and Ludacris. I feel like we started this new trend in Vegas, and I see it getting bigger and bigger, similar to where house music was a few years ago. Then it went all house and barely any hip hop, and now it’s trap and a bunch of different variations of hip hop.

I see that as more radio-friendly. When house started out it was very commercial, and then it transitioned to every DJ wanting to play that one banger song at 12:30, 1:00 a.m. that every other DJ was playing. Nobody’s creating any amazing original music now.

Just came back from Spring Break Miami.... gotta say, while I did enjoy Miami Night Life... it just doesn't come close to Vegas Night Life.
went to spring break in cancun a few weeks back and that tops all the times ive been to vegas imo

Kinda pissed that neither of my boys who are getting married plan on having a bachelor party in Vegas. I may need to hit the fellas up for a homeboy trip.

IMO EDM will be in vegas awhile. Molly's are available everywhere and the music and lights compliment the drug. Plus, people with no rhythm can get down to the song by just fist pumping which is what everyone does on a crowded dance floor.

I heard Omnia got a hip hop room
Is that true?
Would be nice to hop back and forth for some house music and hip hop at the same time

Tis true. Aint big tho. LV ain't got love for hip hop. Still waiting for the tide to change, but seems like EDM is here to stay in the club world.

is it true if you only can get in the hip hop room at omnia if you have a table?

Hip-Hop on Molly is pretty solid too. Sure EDM becomes enjoyable with it, but the drug is really doing all the work to begin with.

My dislike for EDM is more of a concert atmosphere than a club. People are now more focused on the DJ instead of the DJ just being part of the environment.

I'm not really sure how it works. I've read it's more exclusive than the main club, but then I've also read people had no problem getting in. I think it depends on who is in there. If someone like Bieber is performing in there, then it'll be impossible to get in.

This is why I miss the mash-up era of Vegas clubs. Back in 2010, or so. You could walk freely in and out of XS (from outside to inside) and the DJ was just some dude you barely noticed tucked away in the corner. Great vibe.

Spring break is a different animal. There's less regulation on what goes down at the actual parties/clubs so you can get poppin off. I smashed at a foam party

Still nothing has topped a quality Vegas pool party for me. I just love daylife out there and it has a much more diverse crowd in terms of age, race, country than college spring break

Was at Omnia two weekends ago, had a table in between Amir Khan and Ken Norton, Jr. Honestly spent more time listening to the EDM cause it was on the rooftop. So dope!! The hip hop room was dope, got to see Jazzy Jeff spin!

me and my friends we went to drais last summer, ended up leaving early cause we couldnt get down with the music. at least some EDM has singers over the music I can roll with that. but there it was pretty much house music like a rave or something. not feeling it at all, nobody wanted to dance to that

very true. this is the EDM hater in me but i didnt pay 50 bucks to see some dude push buttons, i came to party and have fun. EDM aint making it happen for me

This.

Clubbing/Partying in other cities just proves to me that Vegas is in it's own league... Miami was so unorganized

Places like Miami are ultra selective, and it's just a mad house. Same with New York. Vegas clubs are enormous and cater almost entirely to tourists. They aren't as picky with the crowd because they can't be. As long as you don't look like a slob, you'll get inside. Because of that it's much better organized.

Is going to Las Vegas by yourself a good idea? Any tips for doing that?
Seems like an adventure for sure.
I went out there with my lady but the majority of the time she was in the room sleepin with her kids.. I had the most fun just chatting it up with soo many different people at the BlackJack tables.  You will meet many different people from every where, and im sure they wouldnt mind u tagging along if you are lookin to go out as a group.

I don't know if I'd ever go by myself but I see how it could be interesting and fun if you're sociable

I've had nights that have been pretty much solo. My brother and his boys tapped out really early at XS Nightswim last year so I was solo most of the night. Pulled a few cute ones and met this cool group of dudes from the Bay. It was cool but wouldn't have been better with my boys obviously

Hello Vegas Brethren,

First time poster, long time follower as I love Vegas myself.

Quick question to you all, I have a group of about 15 guys going to Vegas for our yearly trip, we have the club thing and day club settled for the most part, but for the first time ever most of us make good money so we were thinking of doing it nice at a good hotel this year.

Usually we'd get 2 Bella Suites at the Palazzo which is amazing, but i'm thinking of getting one of those giant suites to fit us.

We are going July 24th to July 28th (Fri-Mon) my friend has a Vdara price for around 2300 for the 3 nights which is a good price for a two bedroom suite, but my concerns are it doesn't have a Casino, and i'm worried its more of a couple and getaway type hotel as apposed to the more fun and loud hotels that we usually stay at (PH/Palazzo).

So my question is do you guys have any good recommendations for places to stay for around $3000 for 3 days, and any hook ups if that? Also has anyone stayed at Vdara with a group of guys and how did it pan out?

Thanks for the help!

Question, would the topless pools be worth my time?

Also, is there an actual casino that has a pool I can actually swim in???
