Vice Appreciation Thread

I find Vice's coverage to be thorough and for the most part interesting, although I must say they touch on environmental subjects a little too much for my liking. I understand that Bill Maher is behind alot of that stuff, but I am not trying to watch an episode that essentially is talking about global warming every 3rd episode. We get it dude, chances are if I'm watching vice I am not ninjahood who feels coal is our future.

^^ Yeah man, they're heavy on the agenda pieces. I love Maher but you can feel his influence on some of the stories they cover about the environment lol

Gonna watch it tonight, I think I've only watched like 3 episodes this season.

I'm interested as to how this will go. I never really tuned into H2 so no loss there.

24 hours of Vice material on T.V., though. :smokin

Piece on China didn't surprise me at all

Some cultures worship them like they're a god
Episode had me sitting there just shaking my head. White privilege is boundless.

That's dope. I love watching documentaries. Them getting their own channel is cool. Only thing I don't like is that the docs are 15 mins.

They treat their employees like garbage, literally one of the worst companies to work for.

Everybody thinks it's cool though.

I enjoy the Vice content, but these employees need a bit of a reality check honestly. By this point Vice has the cool reputation, I mean $*^* they just threw a fat party at the old Bowery Bank Building, full of models, drugs and booze. They pushed an obviously exclusive vibe that night, and the employees I met were all pretty douchy and self-entitled.

its like wait a minute, you graduated two years ago from random college with a major in journalism, you decided you wanted to move to the most expensive city in the world and you now want to live with your rebel yet cultured friends in a Williamsburg loft with a roof deck view of Manhattan, and you want to work for a cool and grungy company like vice that pushes it to the limit but knows how to party too cause you know, you still like getting f*^***d up quite a bit these days. You want to get coked out of your mind at Le Bain with your head of content manager at Vice only to eventually get laid by the unknown model impressed by your story about going to Tanzania next week to write about the illegal and unsustainable deforestation crisis going on out there today

If you want more money, don't work for Vice. You're in New York City, there is ALWAYS another job. Shane Smith isn't handcuffing you to the company, he's just not giving you that dream life you think you deserve at 26. Cant stand those who victimize themselves like their careers are either Vice or bust. Leave your job, get another one, come back and leverage your experience/skill set. Don't blog about how you deserve a raise cause you can't comfortably afford Netflix and grubhub anymore.

My bad. End rant.

You made a good point, though. Too many people want to play the victim game nowadays even if they're living a cushy life compared to others. They don't realize that they're blessed just to have a job after taking a journalism course in college. On top of that, it's not like the organization that they work for is some boring institution. These guys are blessed to travel around the world and to me, that's one of, if not, the biggest luxury an individual can be blessed with.

My two cents, anyway.

I've met a few people who work/used to work there....if you're not a department head or main reporter then expect to be paid minimally...but isn't that the case in most media companies ? Also, drinking/drug use is pretty rampant, and production after lunch is near zero.

Their content is fantastic and the real ticket would be to find a way to get private stock since our ponzi scheme of an economy will inevitably push them towards going public...which will make folks like Shane Smith and Co. LOTS of money.....and I fear, change their content.

It'll be a sad sad day if this ever happens. |I

Let's just hope it doesn't.

dude must not realize that it isn't easy finding another journalism job.

 Wut. This is New York City. It isn't easy finding another (any kind of) job in this city. Period

But if you're not about the hustle, go move to Michigan and manage Gerber's social media account for more money.

PS, not talking about you specifically johnnyredstorm johnnyredstorm , but I have no sympathy for Vice victims.

Curious as to how you got this info. Did you work there or know anyone that has? Are there specific departments that pay low and are ****** to work in or the whole company in general?
I work in media in NYC and can tell you don't expect to be making decent cake in an entry level position off the bat here. The job narket is saturated for these types of jobs here and most of the employees are early to mid 20s straight out of college, the type that will take a 26-30k job. The people making decent money are hired as managers or directors and are late 20s into their 30s and have impressed with their prior jobs or projects they've worked on in the past.
I've been wanting to apply there for a few years since before they blew up with their HBO show but figured I'd rather come correct with a few years under my belt and an impressive portfolio of work that way I'd have leverage when it comes to negotiating a salary

nah I know, but as someone that's been trying to make a living as a journalist, it definitely isn't easy to just get up and leave one spot for another. It's a dying industry in general and opportunities are limited. Vice is like an X-Rated version of Bleacher Report. Only the higher ups make anything decent while the guys doing the grunt work get stepped on.

I enjoyed the segment of tomb raiders in the most recent episode of Vice on HBO.

It's horrible to see all that history of mankind to be taken away and forgotten just like that. |I

So much we could learn about ancient civilizations and we destroy all these keys to the past for money.

I understand that these looters need money, but it's a straight shame that that is how everything ended up. :smh:
